I wanted a quiet tea time over in Ingye-dong, Suwon, so I headed to Diaz Cake Boutique (디아즈케이크부띠끄).

What kind of café is Diaz Cake Boutique?

Atmosphere and seating at Diaz Cake Boutique
True to its name, the place feels very much like a cake boutique. The tables aren't cramped and the seats are comfortable, so it's easy to sit a long while with tea.

It's not too noisy, so it works for chatting with a friend, for a date, or for a quiet dessert break. The showcase had slice cakes and whole cakes neatly lined up.

The fruit cake lineup was so pretty that choosing was half the fun, and it looks like a good spot to come for an anniversary cake too. You really get the impression of a café that specializes in cakes.

Can you drink the tea as milk tea?
Yes. At Diaz Cake Boutique, adding ₩1,000 to a tea gets you milk and a pitcher, so you can drink it as milk tea too. That day I ordered Dammann Frères Assam, Kusmi Tea Anastasia and a fruit slice cake.

I added the ₩1,000 for milk and a pitcher and tried the teas as milk tea as well. You can drink it straight, then pour in milk partway and turn it into milk tea, so one cup feels like several.

Dammann Frères Assam: straight and as milk tea
First, the Dammann Frères Assam had a rich, hearty black tea flavor that I liked. It has that deep Assam aroma, so I started with it straight and clean, then added milk and tried it as milk tea.
With milk, the strong black tea taste stayed but went down much more smoothly. It paired well with desserts that have cream and fruit, like the fruit slice cake.

Kusmi Tea Anastasia: a bright scented tea
Kusmi Tea Anastasia smelled brighter than the Assam. A bergamot-style aroma comes up, giving it a fresh feel, and it lightly cleans up the sweetness of the cake.

Straight, the aroma came through better, and with a little milk it turned into a soft scented tea. Milk can be added to both cups, so you can drink them however you like, which I appreciated.

How does the fruit slice cake at Diaz Cake Boutique taste?
The fruit slice cake was pretty from the first look. With fruit between the layers of cream, one bite gives you freshness and sweetness together.

The sponge was soft and the cream wasn't overly heavy, so it went well with tea. Because it's a fruit cake, it doesn't leave your mouth feeling weighed down, and alternating with the black tea felt clean.

The fruit slice cake was also great for photos. The cross-section is pretty and the fruit colors really pop, perfect for a café review post. Eaten alone the cake can feel sweet, but with black tea the sweetness settled just right and I could finish it without feeling overwhelmed.

Overall, Diaz Cake Boutique is a café where cake and tea go nicely together. Unlike coffee-focused cafés, it has a varied tea lineup, so I think tea lovers will especially like it. I was also happy that ₩1,000 gets you milk and a pitcher to enjoy your tea like milk tea.
