Daejeon Station noodle shop for cold-day sujebi with family: Myeonbbal
In short
Myeonbbal Ttaenggineun Nal (면빨땡기는날) is a noodle-focused Korean restaurant in the printing-street alley near Daejeon Station in Dong-gu, Daejeon. On a suddenly chilly day, the writer, her sister, brother-in-law and niece had a warm lunch there of charcoal-grilled meat noodles, spicy jangkalguksu (spicy knife-cut noodle soup) and sujebi (hand-torn dough soup), with free rice and a free kettle of makgeolli. The mild sujebi with big chunks of potato and the yeolmu kimchi from the self-serve bar made Myeonbbal Ttaenggineun Nal especially memorable.

Today's pick is "Myeonbbal Ttaenggineun Nal" (면빨땡기는날), a good lunch spot near Daejeon Station.

Where is Myeonbbal Ttaenggineun Nal and when is it open?
Myeonbbal Ttaenggineun Nal sits along the printing-street alley near Daejeon Station, 678 m from Exit 3. It is open daily 11:00-19:00 and closed every Sunday. For parking, use the private lot behind the building.
I live nearby and had been curious about it whenever I walked past. The menu is shown in photos at the entrance, so you can check it before going in, which I liked.

Atmosphere and who eats here
Inside, there were plenty of tables and the whole place felt clean. We came a little after the lunch rush, and two tables were still eating.
Customers kept trickling in while we ate, and most of them seemed to be solo diners.

What's on the menu?
The menu has single dishes, set menus and rice dishes, plus sides like beef yukjeon (battered, pan-fried beef), charcoal-grilled bulgogi, juicy dumplings and samgyeop suyuk (boiled pork belly).

A cold day, so all four of us went warm
Noodles are clearly the main thing here, right? I'm a total noodle fiend, so lots of dishes tempted me, but the weather suddenly turned cold, so I gave up on the naengmyeon (cold noodles) 😭 My sister, brother-in-law and niece were cold too, so everything we picked was hot~
To try a bit of everything, we ordered charcoal-grilled bulgogi noodles, spicy jangkalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and sujebi (hand-torn dough flake soup)!

Ordering is by table order
You order through the table order device, and each table has pepper, vinegar, mustard and other seasonings for your noodles.

You fetch the self-bar side dishes yourself
The self-bar has yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), napa cabbage kimchi, aged kimchi and pickled radish. They aren't brought to the table and refilled; you take them from the self-bar from the start.
After ordering I wandered over to look at the self-bar. The side dishes are simple but really make an impression. The yeolmu kimchi is so, so good, just so you know. If the kimchi is this good, the yeolmu noodles must be amazing too.

Are the rice and makgeolli really free?
Yes, the kicker at Myeonbbal Ttaenggineun Nal is that the bowl of rice is free. You scoop as much as you want, and on top of that, a whole kettle of makgeolli (Korean rice wine) is on the house.
We had plans in the afternoon so we couldn't drink it, which was a shame..!

This is a piece of writing I spotted while looking around before the food came out.
When the alley lights come on one by one in the evening / Myeonbbal Ttaenggineun Nal quietly opens its door again today / The neighbor who got here first: "Hey, have a bowl before you go" / The woman from next door follows in with smiling eyes. "Today the drink's on me," she says with a shy laugh / Lift a strand of steaming somyeon (thin wheat noodles) / and the touch of a hand that has boiled noodles for years / clings to every strand and melts softly in our mouths / Chatting gently, asking after each other, we pour / and with a cup of drink the worries piled up like dust over the day / loosen and dissolve into the anchovy broth / Faces sitting side by side, / not a drop of shared blood / yet in this alley alone, people who feel like family / One bite of noodles, one cup, one more laugh / and so the night deepens and someone mutters / "See you tomorrow. I'll be craving these noodles again, won't I?"
It's a poem that makes your heart feel warm for no reason 💗

How were the bulgogi noodles, jangkalguksu and sujebi?
The charcoal-grilled bulgogi noodles, spicy jangkalguksu and sujebi came out soon after we ordered. They looked pretty tasty 😛

My pick was the sujebi. I tried a bite each of my sister's and brother-in-law's dishes, and everything was tasty overall :) It had the feel of janchi guksu (banquet noodles) made by a grandmother. Whoever cooks here is really skilled.

The charcoal-grilled galbi that comes with the set
The charcoal-grilled galbi (marinated ribs) that comes with the set menu arrived too. The marinade was sweet and the meat tender, and my niece piled it onto her rice and ate happily.

Sujebi with big potatoes, and rice in the broth makes it filling
The sujebi had a big potato in it, and the broth was mild yet deeply savory. The dough wasn't too thick either, soft but still pleasantly chewy.
After eating a while, I put a little rice into the broth, and I was so full 😋 If you're looking for a good lunch spot near Daejeon Station, I recommend "Myeonbbal Ttaenggineun Nal." Thanks for the meal today!
