Hongdae Station late dinner with no wait: hanwoo gomtang at Doonjeong
In short
Doonjeong Hongdae Direct Branch is a Korean restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, a five-minute walk from Exit 1 of Hongdae Station and a Blue Ribbon Survey pick two years running. Lunch usually means a wait, but a late-evening visit at Doonjeong was relaxed, with clear hanwoo (Korean beef) gomtang, hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap and shrimp minari pancake served as a full brassware spread. Doonjeong is worth a return trip whenever a hearty, restorative bowl of soup is what you want in Hongdae.

Hi, it's moon! A few days before Chuseok, I visited a Hongdae restaurant that's landed on the Blue Ribbon Survey two years running. It turned out to be a comfortable place to go whenever you're craving a hearty bowl of boyangsik (nourishing meal). Here's my review of Doonjeong Hongdae Direct Branch, a Hongdae Station favorite and popular Hongdae lunch spot!

Is there a wait at Doonjeong in the late evening?

Doonjeong, a Hongdae Station favorite! It's well known as a Hongdae lunch spot, popular enough with office workers and diners that a wait is pretty much guaranteed at lunchtime — but visiting in the late evening was relatively relaxed and made for an easy meal.

It felt clean and stylish, like stepping into a modern Korean dining space!
⬆️⬆️ This is where I sat — the tables were spaced far enough apart that conversation didn't feel noisy or crowded.

In one corner of the restaurant sat a lush monstera plant and neat pottery pieces, and framed pictures of appetizing Korean dishes lined the walls, adding to Doonjeong's understated charm.
What is on the menu at Doonjeong?

Doonjeong, a Hongdae lunch spot! The menu on each table was packed with a tidy lineup ranging from meal options to evening drinking snacks.
Doonjeong's signature hanwoo (Korean beef) gomtang comes in several styles to suit different tastes and cuts — the clear hanwoo gomtang, along with chewy sujigomtang (tendon), hearty teuk (premium) gomtang, savory chadol (brisket), and spicy yangtang (tripe). Beyond that, there were specialty dishes like yukhoe bibimbap, minari shrimp pancake, and gogi-muchim (seasoned beef), plus main dishes like hanwoo jeongol and hanwoo gopchang jeongol hot pots — perfect for an evening meal with a drink. A wide selection of traditional Korean liquors was also on offer for those wanting a special pairing. Since I'd come for a proper meal, I ordered from the meal section.

Doonjeong's brassware table setting and side dishes
Clean cutlery and dishware! Salt and pepper were on the table so I could season the gomtang to taste.

After ordering, they brought out napa cabbage kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi), and soy sauce. The kkakdugi was genuinely delicious 😍😍😍, and the soy sauce paired especially well with the shrimp minari pancake.
How is the clear hanwoo gomtang at Doonjeong?

First up, Doonjeong's signature dish, neatly served in a brass bowl — the clear hanwoo gomtang! Steaming hot!
Slow-simmered from hanwoo cow's beef for a long time, the broth was clear and translucent. Wow — clean yet deeply flavorful.

Underneath the finely chopped scallions was a generous hiding of toryeom (rice steeped in hot broth) and thick, hearty chunks of hanwoo beef. Slow-cooked until it was so tender it fell apart along the grain when lifted with chopsticks — the texture was outstanding.

Dipping the beef into the soy-based sauce made specifically for the meat, with a bit of chili on top, doubled the flavor.
Hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap with a spoonful of gomtang broth
A must-try alongside gomtang at Doonjeong, a Hongdae lunch favorite — the hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap!

Freshness is everything with yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), and this used quality hanwoo cow's beef with a vivid, glossy red color and visible firm texture. Plenty of fresh minari (water dropwort) was mixed in too, pairing beautifully with the yukhoe.

Mixed together with the special sauce, the spicy-sweet seasoning, chewy-tender yukhoe, and crunchy minari came together harmoniously in every bite — even better.

It also came with a side of gomtang broth, which was a nice bonus ♥️
Shrimp minari pancake, the side dish to add at Doonjeong

The shrimp minari pancake we ordered as a side caught the eye the moment it arrived, golden brown and crisp-looking!

The plate was packed full of minari and thick, plump shrimp.
Cut into easy-to-eat pieces, it had a wonderfully crisp texture — you could practically hear the crunch with each bite. Dipping it into the house soy sauce blend, mixed with crunchy onion and cheongyang chili, then topping it with a slice of onion made it even more addictive.
Is Doonjeong Hongdae worth a return visit?

Living up to its reputation as a two-time Blue Ribbon Survey pick, Doonjeong Hongdae Direct Branch delivered the clean, deep flavor of hanwoo cow's beef at its best. It's a place I'd return to without hesitation whenever I want a comforting, satisfying meal in Hongdae.
