Ajou University bar for dinner with parents: pork belly udon at Hwial

Hi everyone, this is Meokbohee 🐻 Last week I had a whole week off work, so I've been hitting up Suwon restaurants one by one with my parents! Today's spot has such a great vibe — a restaurant-slash-bar near Ajou University that's great for eating a meal and drinking anju (drinking snacks) at the same time. It's just delicious and has such a nice atmosphere that I want to go back: Hwial.

Hwial Ajou University Branch is a Korean gastropub-bar located in the first alley on the right from Ajou University intersection. Hours are Tue/Wed/Thu/Sun 16:00–00:50 and Fri/Sat 16:00–01:50, and you can use Uman 2-dong Public Parking Lot for parking.

The interior of Hwial Ajou University Branch is completely private and upscale! Since Ajou is a university district, I never imagined a place with this kind of atmosphere would exist here — I fell in love with the vibe!

Wow, they even have a private 8-seat table — great for group gatherings too, and yet the menu prices are so reasonable, which really seals the deal ➿ If you're looking for a bar near Ajou University, Hwial at Ajou University intersection is the one,

Because every table has such a nice atmosphere, and since the standard tables seat 4, even a couple on a date can still enjoy this exact vibe 🥂

There's everything from light bites like egg scramble or salmon salad to heartier options like suyuk (boiled pork) hotpot, beef brisket jjamppong hotpot, and scorched-rice chicken hotpot — so many good-looking options! At Ajou, this menu covers both first-round and second-round drinking perfectly.

The drink lineup is impressive too 🥂 For a date, I'd rather have a highball than somaek (soju-beer mix), and here the highballs range from classic to bokbunja (Korean black raspberry) to green tangerine — perfect for those of us who like a lighter, women-friendly drink.

Here's what we ordered! One each of salmon salad, yuringi, and stir-fried pork belly udon — the visuals were excellent! Plus the salmon salad was on discount, so we had to try it right away.

Salmon salad

Almost everyone I know loves salmon — I can barely find anyone who doesn't! This salmon salad is loaded generously with fresh salmon and ricotta cheese, great to order while dieting, and I'd recommend it if you want a light anju to go with a highball.

It looks light, but it leaves you satisfyingly full after eating it.

Stir-fried pork belly udon

One of the meal items we ordered, the stir-fried pork belly udon, comes out on a hot plate — the visual alone screams 'made by someone who knows food'!!!

When you're looking for a first-round or second-round bar at Ajou, this place is packed with delicious food that will definitely hit your taste — especially the stir-fried pork belly udon: because it's on a heated hot plate, the chewy udon noodles soak up the seasoning perfectly. So freaking good!!!!

If you love chewy udon, you absolutely have to come to Hwial at Ajou and try this!!

Yuringi

It'd been so long since I had yuringi (crispy fried chicken with tangy sauce) that I decided to order it, and my parents loved it too. The crispy fried chicken was delicious, and the combination with the side salad was really great.

Can you feel how happy my chopsticks were! Order this as an anju and everyone keeps reaching for it because it pairs so well with drinks. The salad is great to order light, the stir-fried udon is perfect as a meal ➿ and since yuringi is a fried dish, it goes down really easily with alcohol.

Eaten together with the salad, there's no greasiness at all — the combination of vegetables and fried chicken is just perfect ✨ If you're looking for a great-atmosphere restaurant near Ajou University in Suwon, Hwial is a must-visit bar.
