I really love grilled fish, but I'm not great at prepping it myself and the smell at home is a hassle, so I usually eat it out. Looking for a good grilled fish spot near Handaeap Station, I visited Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Handaeap Station Branch. They grill a variety of fish in a wood-fired hearth, and the full table spread is so solid that I'd recommend it as an Ansan Korean set-meal restaurant whenever people ask.

The Ansan fish grill restaurant I visited, Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang, is easy to get to — just an 8-minute walk from Handaeap Station. It's right across from Songho High School and Hakhyeon Elementary, so it's not hard to find.

It's a newly opened Ansan Korean set-meal restaurant, so it's a perfect spot to take your parents. I went during opening hours and within about an hour the place was nearly full. Newly opened, but the fire power is insane.

Parking is free in the dedicated lot right in front of the store!

True to its brand-new opening, the interior is clean and well put together. The wide windows keep it from feeling cramped, and the spacious layout is great for group gatherings too.

If you're looking for a healthy grilled fish set-meal spot for a group or family gathering in Ansan, I'd recommend this place.

While looking around the store, I noticed there's also a space for solo diners. It can feel awkward eating alone at a 4-person table, but this setup makes it comfortable. It also seems great for a quick fish lunch on your own. Solo diners in Ansan, this one's for you.

The grilled fish set comes with a choice of mackerel, atka mackerel, or Spanish mackerel. There's also a set for two that includes pork, spicy pollack soup, grilled hairtail, and pizza, so you can try a bit of everything. There's a separate kids' set too — pairing it with the pizza would probably make kids happy!

Any side dish you run low on can be refilled at the self-serve bar! They give you an initial serving with the meal, and you just go grab more of whatever you're low on or love. The side dishes are seriously good!

It's a lineup where you can properly taste a full Korean set meal, so I'd recommend the set menu if you're coming as a pair! There are also combos of grilled fish with spicy pollack soup, or grilled fish with braised hairtail!

The side dishes — japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), braised tofu, zucchini, radish kimchi, doenjang soup — were all fresh and totally tasted like home cooking. Very satisfying!

The japchae was genuinely delicious. Seasoning was spot on and the noodles were bouncy, like it had just been tossed fresh. I hit the self-serve bar hard for refills on this one.

Braised lotus root isn't in the basic side dishes, so if you're a fan, just grab some from the self-serve bar.

How does the hearth-grilled mackerel taste?

Mackerel is my favorite grilled fish — even the skin is delicious. Here, it's cooked in a hearth so the skin turns out crispy while the flesh stays moist. The doneness was spot on.

The flesh was genuinely moist, with a clean, rich flavor. Best of all, the mackerel wasn't seasoned too heavily, so the natural savory taste really came through. I had this for breakfast, and since it's easy on the stomach, it's a fish you can enjoy any time of day.

There's ssamjang (dipping paste) and wasabi for wrapping bites, so try adding soy sauce to taste too!

The pork bulgogi that comes with the set for two is served sizzling on a stone plate! It's not spicy, so it actually pairs even better with the mackerel.

The pork had zero gamy smell and was tender. I love the fatty parts, and here the chewy fat and lean meat were mixed in just the right ratio — really delicious. This is the pork flavor Koreans love.

Pork with wasabi is also a great combo! Piling pork and mackerel onto the lettuce that comes alongside and wrapping it with wasabi or ssamjang is the best. I don't usually go for lettuce wraps, but I kept reaching for the lettuce here!
