Beef bulgogi rice bowl lunch with mom, Ansan Star Plaza: Morakmorak

In short

Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch is a seolleongtang (ox bone soup) and butcher's restaurant in the basement food court of Star Plaza in Seongpo-dong, Ansan. On a weekday lunch with mom, the writer ordered beef bulgogi rice bowl (₩10,000) and seolleongtang (₩9,000), going back for the self-serve crunchy peppers more than once — the meat wasn't tough since it comes from the butcher shop, and the broth was rich without any gamey smell. Parking is easy, making it a great spot for a casual lunch with parents.

Today I'm writing about a Seongpo-dong, Ansan favorite: Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch. I'd been craving seolleongtang (ox bone soup) for a while, and with such a wide range of dishes on the menu, I left feeling completely satisfied with my lunch.

Location and Parking — Basement Level of Star Plaza

Exterior of Star Plaza building in Seongpo-dong, Ansan

Morakmorak Seolleongtang is located on the basement level of Star Plaza in Seongpo-dong, Ansan. I used the Star Plaza parking lot, and even during weekday lunch hours there was plenty of space, so parking was really easy. Since parking assistance is available, I also got to browse the mart for the first time in a while.

I've lived in Ansan for N years now, and I really hope Star Plaza never closes. 👍 The basement level has a mart, a rice cake shop, and various restaurants — just take the escalator down.

Interior — The Roomiest Spot in the Food Court

Entrance and interior view of Morakmorak Seolleongtang

It's set up like a food court with several restaurants, and this one had the most space by far. I liked how clean the interior was. Further inside there are even more tables, so it looks like a good spot to eat solo, or just for a simple lunch or dinner.

We visited on a weekday during lunchtime. As lunch hour approached, people kept coming in, clearly having sought out this Seongpo-dong, Ansan favorite.

Menu and Prices

Morakmorak Seolleongtang operates as both a regular restaurant and a butcher's shop. For our Seongpo-dong, Ansan lunch, we ordered seolleongtang (₩9,000) and beef bulgogi rice bowl (₩10,000). Since the meat comes straight from the butcher shop, prices are on the affordable side. It also seems like a good spot for a family meal out or a group gathering.

There are seriously so many menu items, so it's a great place to come with a group and each order to your own taste, or share.

What Are the Self-Serve Side Dishes Like?

You can conveniently grab extra side dishes from the self-serve bar. The crunchy green peppers in particular were so fresh and tasty that I went back for more several times.

On the table there's Himalayan pink salt and pepper, so you can season your seolleongtang or galbitang (short rib soup) to taste.

The basic side dishes are crunchy green peppers, onion, bracken fern, kimchi, and diced radish kimchi. A seolleongtang restaurant needs good kimchi, and the refreshing kick of the salted seafood seasoning made for kimchi I really enjoyed — hadn't had kimchi this good in a while.

Rice comes with the seolleongtang order, and the rice itself was good quality and tasty.

Beef Bulgogi Rice Bowl, ₩10,000

After a short wait, the food arrived. First up is the beef bulgogi rice bowl I ordered — loaded with bean sprouts, cabbage, mushrooms, lettuce, japchae (glass noodles), and plenty of beef bulgogi. It came out so generously portioned — such great value for a Seongpo-dong, Ansan restaurant.

A small bowl of seolleongtang broth came alongside it too, which was nice for slurping down whenever things felt like too much to swallow.

Mixing the beef bulgogi rice bowl

There's so much food that you have to be careful mixing it all together. Haha.

The beef bulgogi is substantial and the sauce is sweet — this flavor combination can't miss. The japchae was soft and the vegetables were fresh and delicious. One bowl and you get both fullness and nutrition — a really satisfying dish!

Mom's Order: Seolleongtang, ₩9,000

A bowl of seolleongtang with rich broth

Mom's seolleongtang arrived too. Just looking at how rich the broth was — one bowl and this summer's health food quota is met!

I seasoned it with pepper and salt and gave it a try — the ox bone broth was rich and clean, with no gamey smell at all. Even just the broth felt restorative, making this a great Seongpo-dong, Ansan spot to bring your parents.

Thin noodles mixed into the seolleongtang

The thin noodles that came with it also mixed well and paired nicely with the seolleongtang broth.

Tender beef pieces inside the seolleongtang

Since it's beef from the butcher shop, it was tender rather than tough. A bowl of seolleongtang for ₩9,000 is really great value. The special seolleongtang comes with double the meat and noodles, so I'd recommend it for anyone with a big appetite.

If you're looking for good seolleongtang in Ansan, or want a solo lunch near Ansan Jungang Station, I recommend Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch. Above all, the prices are so reasonable that if I lived near Star Plaza, I'd probably come here for solo lunches all the time. Haha.
