I finally made it to Gimcheongja Maeun Galbijjim Seohyeon Station Branch, a galbijjim (braised rib stew) restaurant near Seohyeon Station I'd been curious about for ages! On stressful days you gotta eat something spicy 🔥

Gimcheongja Maeun Galbijjim is famous among Seohyeon office workers too! I'd heard there's a wait on weekday lunches, but even on the weekday evening we visited, a few groups were waiting❗️

Luckily there were a few tables open when we arrived, so we got seated without waiting 🍀

Beef or pork, three heat levels, and the 12,900-won weekday lunch

At this Seohyeon galbijjim spot you can choose between beef or pork galbijjim, and we went with pork for two, medium heat 🙋‍♀️

• Mild (Shin Ramyun level of spicy)
• Medium (Buldak level of spicy)
• Spicy (above Buldak, nothing to compare it to)

On weekdays at lunch you can get a set for ₩12,900 per person — pork spicy galbijjim + rice + steamed egg — great value, so I'd recommend it as a Seohyeon lunch spot too.

They're running an event where you get free cheese topping if you write a Naver receipt review 🧀 We wanted to eat it clean without cheese so we skipped it, but if you're adding cheese, keep this in mind. Spicy galbijjim + cheese topping = pretty much guaranteed to be delicious

The five side dishes at Gimcheongja

Napa kimchi, beansprouts, dried radish, macaroni salad, dried gim. Five neatly arranged side dishes! You can ask the staff for refills. They were really kind even while busy.. 🙌

Pork spicy galbijjim for two, 32,000 won plus 3,000-won glass noodles

Rice cakes and glass noodles come included by default, but as a glass noodle lover I can't pass up adding more 🤤 We only added one ₩3,000 portion but it just kept going and going, no matter how much we ate lol. What a life.

How spicy is Gimcheongja's medium heat?

They told us to let the galbijjim simmer on the burner for another 3–4 minutes, then turn it to low before eating! The medium heat was labeled as Buldak level, but of course spice tolerance varies person to person — for our taste it came out just pleasantly spicy, so next time I think ordering spicy would be the sweet spot 😋

Pork ribs, tteokguk-tteok (sliced rice cake), and flat glass noodles, all generously piled on at this Seohyeon galbijjim spot 👍

Even though it's pork galbijjim, the meat was so tender! And there was plenty of it, so the portion felt really generous. Honestly it should be a crime not to fry rice in this sauce, but we were way too full and couldn't manage the fried rice.. 😢 Regretting it hard as I write this post

Wrapping the ribs in gim with beansprouts

The spicy galbijjim is delicious on its own with just the sauce, but wrapping it in gim (dried seaweed) with beansprouts is also amazing~~ If the broth reduces down too much, you can ask staff for a broth refill 🫶
