Seomyeon galbitang restaurant popular with foreign diners: Gang

In short

Gang Galbitang Seomyeon is a Korean restaurant on Saessak-ro in Seomyeon, Busan, that specializes in galbitang (beef short rib soup). The writer and a younger sibling ordered a level-1 spicy galbitang and a basic galbitang, each as a single-person set with noodles added, and a waiting line formed right after they sat down, with many foreign diners in the room. With a self-serve side-dish bar, non-alcoholic beer and meal kits, Gang Galbitang Seomyeon made a great fight-heat-with-heat lunch in Seomyeon.

To really sweat it out and feel full at the same time, I came to Gang Galbitang in Seomyeon for a bowl of hot galbitang (short rib soup).

Gang Galbitang Seomyeon's seating makes solo dining easy

Gang Galbitang Seomyeon has its tables split into two sections, which makes it feel comfortable even if you come alone. There were plenty of other solo diners too, so no need to feel self-conscious, and the food came out quickly — great for a busy lunch.

The dining hall crowded with customers

This place felt popular enough that a waiting line started right after we sat down. It seems word has spread abroad too, because there were a lot of foreign customers. It made me happy to see foreign visitors fully enjoying the charm of galbitang, a warm dish that represents Korean food.

Gang Galbitang menu and kiosk add-on options

Galbitang and spicy galbitang seemed to be the signature menu items, so I chose both. There were plenty of other menu options too, which made me want to come back and try more.

Extras can be added at the kiosk. Noodles add-on +₩2,500, extra meat ₩3,400, extra glass noodles +₩1,000. They also sell non-alcoholic beer, which was great. If you've had a stressful lunch hour, a cold non-alcoholic beer alongside a hearty galbitang is perfect for a mood reset.

There's a self-serve bar, so you can easily grab more banchan (side dishes) if you need some.

Don't forget the review event gift either.

Preparation before eating is a must. To properly enjoy the galbitang, I put on an apron first.

Spice level is adjustable to your taste, and I ordered level 1, mild-spicy.

Basic galbitang with medium noodles added

My sister, who can't handle spicy food, ordered the clean basic galbitang. Each of us got our own full individual spread, which felt like a proper table setting.

A galbitang spread with deep flavor from the clear broth, generously filled.

Medium noodles added for +₩2,500 — that way we got to try both the galbitang and the galbi noodle versions.

The ribs sitting in the bowl looked hearty just to see. The meat, packed full, pulls apart softly since it's been slow-cooked for a long time.

Short ribs packed with meat in the galbitang

The ribs taste great dipped in the sauce, but personally I preferred eating them plain, without dipping anything, since that way you can really taste the meat's own clean flavor and richness.

The cool, crunchy kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi) paired really well with the hot galbitang.

Glass noodles are already included by default, so I didn't add extra, and the amount was just right. If you love glass noodles, feel free to add more.

Even on a hot day, I came away having properly nourished my body with a bowl of hot galbitang.
