Korean BBQ with kids in Sharosu-gil, Gwanak: Gogigupneunsaramdeul

In short

Gogigupneunsaramdeul Sharosu-gil is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Sharosu-gil near Seoul National University Station in Gwanak, Seoul. Visiting on a weekday lunch with two preschool-age daughters, the writer ordered dry-aged 480 pork shoulder and cubed pork neck, Gwanaksan steamed egg, and charcoal rice balls, and found parking right outside, a baby chair, and even a swap from kimchi stew to homemade soybean paste stew for the kids. A solid pick for family meals with kids, work dinners, or a first stop before a wedding gathering.

On a weekday lunch, I skipped daycare for the day and took my daughters out for barbecue in Sharosu-gil. They'd been singing about wanting samgyeopsal, so off we went — and honestly, taking the kids to a BBQ place on a weekday afternoon felt extra fun haha.

This time we went to Gogigupneunsaramdeul Sharosu-gil, well known as a Korean BBQ spot in Sharosu-gil! Parking right out front, a baby chair, friendly staff, and great food — a fully satisfied review coming your way!

Parking and waiting at this Sharosu-gil Korean BBQ spot

We made it! Gogigupneunsaramdeul Sharosu-gil! I've been to a lot of BBQ places in Sharosu-gil, and very few actually have parking, so having a lot right in front of the store was already a huge plus. It's also right by Moraenae Children's Park public parking lot, so no worries even if the store lot is full — probably less than a 3-minute walk.

There's a waiting area set up outside too, and I'd read reviews mentioning some wait on weekends or weekday evenings. You register through the Tabling app apparently.

Luckily there was no wait since it was a weekday lunch, but when we walked in, 4-5 tables were already eating, and the vibe felt like a work dinner. A company that treats staff to BBQ during the day — sounds ideal haha.

Looking it up, both the pork and beef here get really good reviews, but the most raved-about item is the all-you-can-eat salt-grilled, seasoned, and gochujang pork trio. I couldn't try it with my two preschoolers in tow, but the tables next to us all seemed to be having it.

You order from a tablet at each table, so before ordering I read through the handy tips printed around it.

Lunch happy hour notice

I was wondering why so many people were here for lunch — turns out lunch service just started, and there's a happy hour with 50% off soju, beer, and highballs! Wow, soju and beer at ₩2,500, and the highball price was crazy good too.

Every picture on the menu looked so delicious that my daughters and I took choosing very seriously (you can see my eldest's serious little hand scrolling the tablet lol). In the end we ordered:

  • 480 dry-aged pork shoulder x2
  • 480 dry-aged cubed pork neck x1
  • Gwanaksan steamed egg
  • Rice balls

That's what we went with. Even though it was just me and my two daughters, it was genuinely enough meat to stuff two adults full haha. Since I'd already skipped daycare for the day, I figured we might as well eat properly.

Guide to eating chadol samhap the recommended way

I wanted to try their recommended way of eating the chadol samhap (thin brisket, kimchi, and scallop combo) exactly as shown, but the kids said the scallops felt weird, so that'll have to wait for next time... oh well.

Spacious inside, with even more seating further in

With its round grill tables and chairs, Gogigupneunsaramdeul Sharosu-gil looks like a classic BBQ joint, but it actually uses the space really efficiently, so there were plenty of seats.

Even on a weekday lunch, several tables were already eating, and the overall atmosphere was great for chatting over meat — it felt like a work dinner crowd, like people doing the all-you-can-eat course. Looking just at the front tables, you wouldn't guess how big the place really is.

There's another large room behind the counter with more seating too! The lights were off since it was a weekday lunch, but I'd guess they're usually on for weekday evenings and weekends.

Gogigupneunsaramdeul Sharosu-gil apparently only uses top-grade, well-marbled Korean pork, which is reassuring, and if you ask for leaner cuts they'll adjust the slicing for you. Details like this really win customers over.

I was puzzled seeing the drinks and alcohol disappearing so fast for a weekday afternoon — turns out it was the happy hour pricing. Soju and beer for ₩2,500, what is happening!

And for anyone with kids like me, I'd recommend Gogigupneunsaramdeul Sharosu-gil for this too: they have baby chairs ready, and when I asked for one, they went and wiped it down clean for me. You know how these small gestures really win you over!

Ate until we were stuffed — everything was delicious

Basic side dishes served at the start of the meal

The basic side dishes came out first. Starting with the shredded scallion salad, which was genuinely so good.

With such a wide range of sauces and sides to try, you get lots of different ways to enjoy the meat, so I'd especially recommend Gogigupneunsaramdeul Sharosu-gil to people who've eaten a lot of BBQ and really love it.

480 dry-aged pork shoulder and cubed pork neck

And now, today's star — the 480 dry-aged pork shoulder and cubed pork neck! Just the name Gogigupneunsaramdeul ('people who grill meat') sounds like a place serious about meat, and I wondered how the quality would compare given the price. But it turned out even better than I expected.

They put the shoulder on first. The size was just right for eating with kids, and it was aged really well, so it was super tender.

Charcoal rice balls — the reason we never actually grilled them haha

And the charcoal-grilled rice balls I'd ordered so ambitiously... here's why we never actually grilled them, haha.

Charcoal rice ball being mixed

I ordered this thinking it'd be fun to make together with the kids. As soon as it arrived, they each grabbed a glove and mixed it themselves — and it turned out my daughters just loved the rice ball as-is. They said the rice mixed with sauce, sesame oil, and seaweed flakes was already delicious on its own, and they wolfed it down so fast that the rice ball, which was meant to go on the grill, disappeared before it ever made it there, haha.

Gwanaksan steamed egg

The Gwanaksan steamed egg had such a cute name! I meant to photograph it the moment it arrived, but my daughters dove in hungry before I could, haha, so I was too busy feeding them to get a proper shot. But the portion was generous and it was soft and delicious, so the kids ate it right up.

The sauce that tastes like tonkatsu — my personal pick

At most BBQ places, if it's just ssamjang and salt, things get a bit repetitive after a while — but here, the dipping sauces and pickle sides were so varied that every single bite felt like a new experience.

My personal favorite was this tonkatsu-like sauce! It was genuinely unique. If you dip the meat in that peanut-sauce-looking thing and then coat it in the breadcrumbs next to it, it tastes exactly like tonkatsu!!!! Dipped in it, the meat was savory and tender, and it felt totally different from the usual BBQ sauces — this was the one that stuck with me most. My second daughter, who loves tonkatsu, dug into this especially hard, haha.

True to their status as (self-proclaimed, not actually award-winning) champions of the preschool lettuce-wrap-eating contest, my daughters happily kept eating away, which made things so easy for me as the mom eating alongside them.

And now, mom's turn to eat!

Normally kimchi stew comes as the default side dish, but seeing we'd come with the kids, they thoughtfully swapped it for a homemade soybean paste stew instead!

It was much easier for the kids to eat, and more than that, this soybean paste stew was surprisingly hearty! Mushrooms, tofu, meat, vegetables — it was packed with ingredients, so it wasn't just a broth you sip but one where you get to pick out all the goodies too.

When grilling with kids, if you flip too slowly things burn, so flip fast and often and it won't burn haha.

With the cubed pork neck now on the grill, mom's own feast begins. Now that the little birds are fed, it's my turn to properly eat!

Loading up on the incredible scallion salad, a dab of garlic, a dip in ssamjang, then meat on top for one bite.

Dipping this way and that, trying it all out, I really felt like I could've eaten another 5 servings of meat. Once you start trying each thing, the meat just disappears, haha.

Of all the side dishes, of all the many accompaniments, what took first place today? This seaweed pickle!!!! It probably isn't too hard to make, but wow, it's genuinely delicious. Eating it with the meat, the seaweed goes in almost like perilla leaf, cutting through the fattiness of the meat while the seaweed's savory flavor spreads through — genuinely so good!

In Sharosu-gil, there are plenty of good spots for work dinners, group meals, and family meals, but I think this place would also work well for anyone looking for a budget-friendly first stop before a wedding gathering. They have both beef and pork, the prices are great, there's little that could disappoint on the menu, and with everything from meat to sides to sauces so varied, it's a great spot to eat with a group. I'm definitely coming back — next time I'll try the samhap!
