Is there a wait at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon on a weekday lunch?
Even though I arrived before lunchtime on a weekday, the parking lot at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch was full and we had to wait a bit. My company's anniversary gave me a free Friday lunch, so I finally got to eat with my parents for the first time in a while. They prefer fish to meat, and I'd had this place on my radar for a long time. Long story short, I got to see for myself why so many people recommend it as a Suwon grilled fish restaurant.
The parking lot was already packed before noon, and almost every table inside was taken. We waited a little, and it was striking to see everyone from families to office workers. When you bring your parents, taste matters, but so do a comfortable atmosphere and a clean restaurant, and this place made a good first impression.

Inside the restaurant: self-bar and cafeteria area
The interior was much bigger and more pleasant than I expected, with a self-bar and a cafeteria area. It's bright and clean, perfectly good for a family meal, and the tables are spaced generously, so it never felt stuffy. One side has a cafeteria space where you can wait or rest after eating, which made it feel like a restaurant that thinks about its guests' comfort, not just somewhere you eat and leave.
The self-bar was kept tidy, and you can help yourself to whatever side dishes you need, which I liked. Even on a weekday lunch it was hard to find an empty seat, but the staff were quick and friendly, so the crowd didn't bother us. I think that's one of the reasons people seek this place out as a Suwon grilled fish restaurant.
What we ordered from the menu
My parents and I ordered braised mackerel for 2 and grilled Spanish mackerel for 1. The menu centers on grilled and braised fish: grilled mackerel, Pacific cod (imyeonsu), Spanish mackerel and cutlassfish, plus braised mackerel as a meal option, so you can choose to your taste. Some fish restaurants have a dull menu, but here you can enjoy both grilled and braised fish, and I liked the range.
My parents love braised dishes and I prefer grilled, so we ordered different things and shared, which turned out to be a very satisfying choice. Looking around after we ordered, most tables had various fish dishes on them, and the customers looked quite happy.

Side dishes and sikhye and nurungji tea for dessert
The basic side dishes, including seasoned deodeok (a mountain root), come neatly arranged in kinds that suit fish, and you can refill them freely at the self-bar. I looked them over before the food arrived, and the spread wasn't flashy but well matched to fish dishes. I especially liked being able to refill whatever ran out. None of them were over-seasoned, so they didn't overpower the taste of the fish.
After the meal there were sikhye (sweet rice drink) and sungnyung (nurungji tea) too, which wrapped things up nicely. Even if you haven't had anything greasy, it cleans the palate, which I appreciated. It may seem minor, but thoughtful touches like this raise how satisfying the meal feels. My parents even said the side dishes were clean and neat, and it was impressive how much care went into the basics.

How was the braised mackerel?
The braised mackerel comes with big pieces of mackerel and radish and kimchi soaked deeply in the seasoning, and it tasted rich in savory depth rather than spicy or salty. The dish I was most looking forward to was excellent, as you'd expect from a signature item. There was a generous amount of large mackerel, and it looked like one bowl of rice wouldn't be enough. The broth wasn't aggressively spicy or salty but full of umami, so anyone can enjoy it without strain.
The radish had cooked for so long that it split softly at a touch of the chopsticks, and the seasoning had soaked in deeply, so it was great with rice. The mackerel had no fishy smell at all, and the meat was thick and moist, showing the polish you'd expect from a braised fish specialist. It was my parents' favorite dish, and I could fully understand why this place is known as a braised fish restaurant, not just a Suwon grilled fish restaurant.

Is the grilled Spanish mackerel dry?
The grilled Spanish mackerel was golden outside and moist inside, and personally the most memorable dish of the day. A big, thick piece came out grilled just right, the flakes parted softly with a light press of the chopsticks, and the fish's nutty flavor filled my mouth. Spanish mackerel easily turns dry when grilled badly, but this one kept just the right moisture, and the texture was very good.
It's good with rice, and also great with a little wasabi. Its clean, mild taste has a different charm from the braised mackerel. If you like grilled Spanish mackerel, I think you'll be quite satisfied, and having eaten it, I could see why many people recommend this as a Suwon grilled fish restaurant.

A Suwon fish restaurant that's good for taking parents
Lunch with my parents at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch was a meal everyone enjoyed. It meant more because I was eating with my parents, and with the spacious, clean restaurant, handy self-bar, varied fish dishes, and sikhye and nurungji tea for dessert, there was nothing to complain about. Above all, I could confirm through the food why so many people come that there's a wait even on a weekday lunch.
I can confidently recommend it whenever you crave grilled or braised fish, and to anyone looking for a place to take their parents. I'd happily come back whenever I want fish again, and if you want proper fish dishes in Suwon, I recommend visiting Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch once.
