Mapo Korean restaurant with generous service: Doonjeong Hongdae
In short
Doonjeong Hongdae Direct Branch is a Korean restaurant in Mapo, Seoul. I tried spicy hanwoo gomtang, yukhoe bibimbap, and meat kimchi pancakes in its neat, polished dining room. Verdict: a filling Korean meal with memorable hospitality.

I heard that Doonjeong has received a Blue Ribbon for two consecutive years since 2025. When I visited myself, the atmosphere already felt a little different from an ordinary gukbap restaurant. The restaurant was spotless, but even each piece of tableware used to serve the food felt upscale, making the meal feel a little more properly treated! Today, I ordered three dishes: spicy hanwoo gomtang, yukhoe bibimbap, and meat kimchi pancakes~!

When you want a neat Korean meal in Hongdae
Hongdae has so many restaurants—pasta, ramen, barbecue, and more—but sometimes you just crave a neat, satisfying Korean meal. Especially as the weather starts to turn chilly, a steaming bowl of soup sounds even better~! From the moment the food arrived, Doonjeong felt beautifully put together. Rather than the cozy, rustic feel people often associate with gukbap restaurants, everything was very neat, from the tableware to the way the dishes were presented. It would be nice to visit with parents, and it also seems like a good spot when you want a quieter Korean meal in Hongdae.
Hot and spicy hanwoo gomtang
First up, the spicy hanwoo gomtang! As the weather began to cool down, a hot soup dish like this felt especially welcome. Hanwoo gomtang usually brings a clear, mild broth to mind, but I chose the spicy version that day. With broth and plenty of beef together, it was more than enough for a full meal, and it was easy to enjoy without feeling heavy. Personally, I find gukbap or gomtang a little burdensome when it is too greasy or leaves a heavy feeling in my mouth afterward, but Doonjeong managed to deliver both flavor and a satisfying portion while still making the meal feel neat and balanced~!

Yukhoe bibimbap that looked delicious from the color alone
I also ordered yukhoe bibimbap! Since yukhoe bibimbap contains so many different ingredients, how it looks when it first arrives matters too, right? As expected, Doonjeong served it beautifully, so I was happy before even taking a bite. Mix the yukhoe (seasoned raw beef) and all the ingredients together well, then take a big bite!! It was a completely different style from the gomtang, so if several people visit, I would recommend ordering different dishes and sharing. Gomtang for anyone craving hot soup, yukhoe bibimbap for anyone wanting a hearty rice meal! Having options like this made it easy for everyone to order according to their taste.

The meat kimchi pancakes I could not pass up
The gomtang and yukhoe bibimbap alone would have been enough for a meal, but... while looking over the menu, I simply could not pass up the meat kimchi pancakes. Haha, so I added those too!! Kimchi pancakes are great for sharing among several people alongside a meal. With meat in them as well, they felt even more substantial. A spoonful of gomtang, a piece of kimchi pancake, then a bite of yukhoe bibimbap~~ Ordering all three together meant the dishes did not overlap, so it was nice to enjoy a little of everything. A meal with good flavor, decent portions, and beautifully presented food!

The owner's service was what I remembered most
Honestly, I was happy with the food that day, but there was another moment that stayed with me most. A student at the next table was eating alone and ordered an extra bowl of rice. Then another extra one!! They asked for two additional bowls of rice in total. The owner brought them kindly without the slightest sign of inconvenience and even asked first, “Don’t you need more broth?” I was a little surprised watching this. Usually, it already feels kind when someone takes care of only what a customer asks for, but seeing the owner notice a student eating more rice and ask first whether they also needed more broth was truly impressive.
I was curious, so when I paid, I asked the owner about it. What they said was even more impressive.
If you’re buying a meal, shouldn’t you leave feeling full?
They said they could always give more if needed. Oh~~~ The owner’s attitude is the best!!

Flavor, portions, presentation, and generosity
My visit to Doonjeong Hongdae Direct Branch was personally satisfying in many ways. From the spicy hanwoo gomtang to the yukhoe bibimbap and meat kimchi pancakes, every dish was easy to enjoy neatly, and the portions were filling without ever feeling insufficient. I especially liked the clean atmosphere, which felt a little different from a typical gukbap restaurant, along with the upscale-looking tableware and carefully presented food. It would be great for a hearty meal alone, but it also seems like a good choice when looking for Korean food in Hongdae with parents or family. And above all, the owner’s service that I saw that day!! It made me think that delicious food is not the only reason you want to return to a restaurant.

Next time, when the weather gets a little colder, I should come back for the hot pot!!
