Jongno 3-ga bakery revisit: garlic and sold-out coffee bread, Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a takeout bakery with a hanok exterior in Jongno, Seoul, 2 minutes on foot from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station. On a second visit, the writer picked up only two breads: Munhwa Bakery's signature garlic bread and a coffee bread that had sold out on the shelf, which staff brought out separately. The garlic bread was nutty and salty with a moist center, and the coffee bread was soft and sweet, making it an easy dessert-style treat.

I was out in Jongno 3-ga and stopped by Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵), which has become quite famous among people who love bread lately.

📍 Munhwa Bakery, Jongno 3-ga Address: 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea Hours: 11:00 – 19:00 ※ Note: it may close early once the bread sells out.

I love bread in general, so whenever I find a good bakery I can't just pass by — I end up going back. This time I really wanted to revisit while I was in Jongno, so I had pretty high expectations even before this second visit. Munhwa Bakery is especially known for its garlic bread and coffee bread as popular menu items, so I decided ahead of time to go with just those two instead of anything else!

To cut to the chase — the two breads have completely different vibes, so it was fun trying them one by one. :)

Munhwa Bakery's location — 2 minutes on foot from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station

Munhwa Bakery is fairly close to Jongno 3-ga Station, so it was easy to get to. The address is 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea, about a 2-minute walk from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station.

It's also a good spot to stop by while heading toward Ikseon-dong or strolling around the area from Jongno 3-ga, so it's easy to fit into a route~

Getting closer, it still has a different feel from your typical franchise bakery. The hanok-style exterior fits well with the atmosphere unique to Ikseon-dong and Jongno, and you can spot it's a bakery even just passing by. So even though I came to buy bread, I ended up taking photos of the exterior first.

The store is mostly takeout — there's no seating area

Going inside, the store was on the compact side. Munhwa Bakery is mainly a takeout place, so there's no dedicated space to sit and eat for a while — you pick your bread and take it away packed up. The interior is narrow, so it felt more like people entering one after another rather than a big crowd all at once.

Honestly, I liked it better this way — I could focus on picking my bread.

Inside Munhwa Bakery's compact store

As soon as I walked in, I browsed the bread on display, and there were more varieties than I expected, so I paused for a moment to decide. Along with garlic bread and coffee bread, I heard they also have onion bagels, injeolmi (sweet rice cake) bread, and more — but what I picked this time were the two I'd been craving: garlic bread and coffee bread!

Seeing the breads laid out one by one made me want to just grab a bit of everything.

But if I got greedy and bought too much, I probably wouldn't finish it all, so I stuck to just two kinds this time. Especially if it's your first visit, I really recommend starting with the popular items — garlic bread and coffee bread!!

Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread — bold flavor outside, moist inside

First up, the garlic bread I most wanted to eat again!

Munhwa Bakery's signature garlic bread on display

It's known as one of Munhwa Bakery's signature items, so I picked it first. Just looking at it gave off that savory, sweet vibe unique to garlic bread. Since I was taking it home, they packed it up neatly for me.

I finally got a good look at the garlic bread I brought home. You could catch a subtle garlic and butter scent right from the outside, and the bread itself was thicker than I expected — the kind where just one piece feels fairly filling!

If you're a garlic bread lover, the look alone might make your mouth water haha.

The coffee bread was sold out on the shelf — they fetched one for me separately

The second thing I picked was coffee bread. (It's popular enough that it was sold out on the display shelf, T_T so they brought one out separately for me!!) Just the name alone makes anyone who loves coffee curious.

It has a completely different feel from garlic bread, which made me glad I chose both together. It's a bread with a subtle coffee aroma, so it seemed like a good pick on days you're craving something sweet and dessert-like.

The coffee bread was a bit softer and sweeter than the garlic bread. It tasted like it would go really well with coffee — true to its name, it made me want to pair it with a cup. Personally, I love breads with a bold flavor like the garlic bread, but I also love this kind of soft, sweet bread, so I was really satisfied buying both.

Garlic bread vs. coffee bread — how are they different?

Laying them side by side like this, you can really see how different the vibes are, right? The garlic bread is savory and salty with that distinct garlic character, while the coffee bread is sweet with a coffee aroma to enjoy — great for alternating bites between the two.

If you're visiting for the first time and unsure which bread to pick, I'd also recommend the garlic bread + coffee bread combo.

A great takeout bakery to add to an Ikseon-dong and Jongmyo walking route

Munhwa Bakery is great for eating right after you buy, but it also works well packed up to take home or enjoy while strolling around the neighborhood. Near Jongno 3-ga Station there's a lot to explore too, like Ikseon-dong and Jongmyo Shrine, so you can pack your bread and continue on to sightsee nearby.

There's also a notice that the shop may close earlier than its listed hours once the bread runs out, so if you want to get the popular items, it's best not to visit too late.

Personally, the one I most wanted to eat again on this visit was the garlic bread, and having it again, I understood why so many people who visit Munhwa Bakery recommend it. It has that distinct bold flavor of garlic bread while staying moist inside — a different kind of charm from garlic bread that's simply crispy. The coffee bread, unlike the garlic bread, was soft and sweet, so it was great to enjoy like a dessert.

If you're looking for a bakery in Jongno 3-ga, I think this is a must-visit spot. Especially if you're searching for good bakeries in Jongno 3-ga, the location is convenient, and you can pick the signature menu yourself and take it home to enjoy as a snack or dessert. Rather than expecting a café-style bakery where you sit and eat, it's better suited to those who want to take good bread to go and enjoy it elsewhere.

What I bought this time was

  • 🥖 Garlic bread
  • ☕️ Coffee bread

these two. If you have a reason to visit Jongno 3-ga, it's a good place to pack some bread as a snack, and it's conveniently located to stop by while exploring Ikseon-dong or Jongmyo Shrine, so it's easy to fit into a route.

Above all, if it's your first visit, don't overthink it — just try the popular garlic bread and coffee bread first! Next time I'm back in Jongno 3-ga, I'd love to try the other breads I haven't tasted yet.
