Jongno 3-ga bakery: walnut bread eaten on the way home, Munhwa Bakery
In short
Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a hanok-style bakery on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno, Seoul, between Jongno 3-ga Station and Ikseon-dong. The writer took home an onion bagel (6,000 won), walnut bread (3,500 won) and squid ink condensed milk bread (4,500 won), and the walnut bread, eaten before even getting home, was the biggest surprise with its nutty, crunchy bite. Munhwa Bakery sells only bread baked that day and donates the leftovers, making it a great place to pick up bread on an Ikseon-dong stroll.

Near Jongno 3-ga Station, as you wander down the cozy alleys of Donhwamun-ro, there's a spot where the smell of garlic bread stops you in your tracks. Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a hanok-style bakery with gentle, tasty breads, and I fell for it completely after one visit. I love doing bakery pilgrimages wherever I go, so here's my honest review of the breads I took home!
Munhwa Bakery location, hours and parking
Munhwa Bakery is at 65 Donhwamun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul (1st floor). It's open daily 11:00-20:00, and there's no parking. Walk slowly from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station, or from the Anguk Station side toward Changdeokgung, and you'll see it right by the road, so it was really easy to find. It's a perfect place to pop in for bread before or after a stroll around Ikseon-dong Hanok Village or Changdeokgung!!

Baked fresh daily, with leftovers donated
Munhwa Bakery only sells bread baked fresh that day, and any bread that doesn't sell is donated to people in need, like children who miss meals, elderly people living alone, and free meal centers. I learned this while looking things up, and it really touched me. It's already famous as a Jongno 3-ga favorite and super popular, and it still has this warm influence... It made my heart feel warm before I even ate 🥺🥺
What's the atmosphere inside Munhwa Bakery?

The shop has a classic wood-toned interior with a hanok feel that suits the name Munhwa Bakery ("culture bakery"). The moment I stepped in, the nutty, sweet smell of bread wrapped around my nose, and I was genuinely happy.. The inside was neat and tidy too.

Behind the glass, well-baked breads were lined up neatly one by one, and the whole time I was looking I was lost in a happy dilemma: which one should I pick..? It's not a noisy, artificial bakery but a space with the warm tradition of a hanok street! If you love bread, this Jongno 3-ga bakery is a must-stop.
What did I buy at Munhwa Bakery, and for how much?
At Munhwa Bakery I took out three things: an onion bagel for ₩6,000, walnut bread for ₩3,500 and squid ink condensed milk bread for ₩4,500.
- Onion bagel ₩6,000
- Walnut bread ₩3,500
- Squid ink condensed milk bread ₩4,500

I slowly looked around the shelves, torn in front of the signature breads and all the delicious-looking ones.. T_T
Onion bagel: onion and cream cheese

The onion bagel was overwhelming in size alone, and between the crisp, chewy bagel it's packed with crunchy onion and sweet, nutty cream cheese. One bite and my brows scrunched up on their own.. The sharpness of the onion cuts the richness of the cream cheese, so it's a great combination~ 🧅

Squid ink condensed milk bread: sweetness done right

The squid ink condensed milk bread has moist, sweet condensed milk soaked all through the chewy black squid ink bread, a textbook example of sweetness! It reminded me of the squid ink bat-shaped bread from Sungsimdang (성X당), which I love.
Walnut bread: the one I couldn't resist on the way home

I couldn't wait on the way home and ate the walnut bread first, and my eyes honestly popped open at the first bite! Hahaha The outside is loaded with nutty walnuts, so it reminds me of soboro bread (streusel bread), but it's plainer, and the crunch of the walnuts is so good that it never gets old and you keep reaching for more.

The other breads weren't dry at all either, and the more I chewed, the more I tasted the dough itself, so I was really satisfied. Apparently the garlic bread and coffee bread are signature items too, so next time I'll definitely try the garlic bread, haha.
Munhwa Bakery verdict: worth going back?

This isn't just flashy trend bread. It's a bakery with good ingredients baked the same day and real care, so it's gentle on the stomach and full of deep flavor. The taste is great and they even carry on with kind donations, so I want to visit more and more often~
If you're heading out around Jongno or Ikseon-dong and want to carry home an armful of nutty, hearty bread, Munhwa Bakery is an Ikseon-dong bakery you absolutely have to visit! I'm planning to go back soon for the garlic bread and coffee bread, haha. How about a bread picnic while strolling Ikseon-dong Hanok Village in the cool weather?!
