Dark-toned Yeonnam-dong bakery café: choco chip salt bread, Noknok
In short
Noknok (녹녹) is a large two-floor bakery café on Seongmisan-ro in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo, Seoul, known for its many flavors of salt bread. On Noknok's dark-toned first floor, the writer had a choco chip salt bread, a croissant that resembles a mocha bun and a hot latte, though the plain salt bread had already sold out. The atmosphere, bread and coffee at Noknok were all satisfying, so go early if you want the popular salt bread.

What kind of café is Noknok in Yeonnam-dong?
Noknok (녹녹) is a big two-floor bakery café on Seongmisan-ro in Yeonnam-dong, and word has spread that it's a salt bread hotspot. "A stylish space glowing in the dark" is exactly how I'd describe it. Walking through the Yeonnam-dong alleys, some places just grab your feet, and Noknok is a big café that's becoming a hot spot in the neighborhood. Lots of people already know it for its salt bread, and I finally made it there too!

What is the interior vibe at Noknok?
The interior is built on a dark tone, which makes it clearly different from the usual bright white cafés. The first thing I felt when I walked in was a calm, weighty atmosphere. The dark interior feels upscale and refined, I think. Every light adds depth to the space, so it's a kind of magical place that makes you forget how busy Yeonnam-dong is for a while, and it's great for enjoying dessert at a solo tea time.

Open counter and first-floor sofa seats
What caught my eye most at Noknok was the open counter. The cleverly designed counter anchors the whole café, and watching the barista brew coffee feels like a performance in itself, you know? Glowing under the soft lights, the counter is also a photo spot you can't help but shoot. I used the first floor, and thanks to the high ceiling it didn't feel stuffy at all, and the comfy sofas and table layout let me spend my time in comfort.

What kinds of salt bread does Noknok have?
Noknok has a really wide range of salt bread (소금빵, a buttery roll topped with sea salt), so it's heaven for bread lovers. The variety of salt bread flavors was one of the biggest reasons I visited. Sadly, the main plain salt bread was already sold out, so I couldn't try it, but the other items were so good they blew that disappointment away. I picked a choco salt bread studded with chocolate chips, and a big, plump croissant like a mocha bun (a coffee-flavored sweet bun) that was overwhelming just to look at.

Choco chip salt bread
Noknok's choco chip salt bread takes the classic salt bread, crisp outside and moist inside, and adds sweet chocolate chips, so the sweet-and-salty balance was art. With every bite the buttery flavor and rich chocolate fill your mouth, and I wolfed it down in no time, haha.

Mocha bun-style croissant
Noknok's mocha bun-style croissant looks just like a classic mocha bun. Add the layered croissant texture and chewing it is a real joy, and the faint coffee aroma with the crisp layers pairs wonderfully with coffee, so one might not be enough.

How is the coffee at Noknok?
The coffee at Noknok was "good" too. Even with great desserts, mediocre coffee makes you hesitate to come back, but Noknok's coffee has a hefty, nutty bean flavor, and it didn't overpower the sweet salt bread while leaving a clean aftertaste. A hot latte and freshly baked bread in that dark atmosphere felt like the perfect full stop to a Yeonnam-dong outing.

Who is Noknok in Yeonnam-dong recommended for?
I strongly recommend Noknok to anyone who wants quiet time to think in the Yeonnam-dong alleys, or who wants really good salt bread. It's not easy to find a café in Yeonnam-dong that's this spacious and comfortable, with a stylish interior and tasty desserts all together. I think I found a favorite café! The time I spent in the cozy first-floor atmosphere was healing in itself, and next time I'm definitely going early to conquer the plain salt bread that was sold out!! I hope you get to experience a sparkling, stylish time in a dark space.

Tips for visiting Noknok
And here's a tip!!! Noknok's popular salt breads can sell out fast, so I recommend going early in the afternoon! I'm sure you'll feel a more special atmosphere than at the places you usually go, haha.
