Why do I end up at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam twice a month?
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam (종로돈부리 연남) is a Japanese rice bowl restaurant in Yeonnam-dong where I've had lunch several times, with my daughter and with my mom, and the tendon (tempura rice bowl) here is amazing. Everyone in our family loves tendon, but my daughter and I are absolutely crazy about it, so I think we go about twice a month.
First, the rice is fluffy and delicious, and salmon is Jongno Donburi's signature, made with really fresh ingredients, so that's technically the main attraction. But it's the tendon I keep craving, which is why I come back so often.

How to get to Jongno Donburi Yeonnam
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is inside an alley in Yeonnam-dong, reached by walking from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 3 toward Yeontral Park. It's an easy walk from the station.
Keep walking toward Yeontral Park and you'll reach the alley by the Yeonnam-dong café street. Wander in gently and it's on a row of charming restaurants, a hidden gem you can find with a little looking. It's nice to stroll there through Yeontral Park, and with so many cafés nearby, lunch followed by dessert is perfect, so it works great as a date spot too.

What's the atmosphere like at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam?
The restaurant has a wood-toned interior with soft lighting that feels just like a Japanese home-style eatery. It felt warm the moment I walked in, and the quiet, moody vibe typical of Yeonnam-dong suits the space well.
The tables aren't packed too close together, so it's comfortable to eat, and plenty of people dine solo, so it feels relaxed. It even has a bit of a small local restaurant in Japan feel, which matched the rice bowls nicely.

You can also catch a glimpse of the kitchen at work, which felt homey, and every time the salmon and rice bowls came out one by one they looked so good it was a treat for the eyes.
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam menu and the signature sake-don
Menu

The menu is mostly Japanese home-style rice bowls, generously topped, so it makes a hearty meal. The signature sake-don (salmon rice bowl) uses aged salmon, so the texture is super soft and seems to melt in your mouth. Salmon lovers will be happy with these home-style dishes.

The katsudon my daughter orders every time
Tendon

The katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl) here has a thick, properly crunchy cutlet, so my daughter orders only that every single time we come. The sweet-salty sauce and egg go so well with the rice that it feels like a real Japanese donburi, which I think is why she loves it.
The mixed katsudon, which also comes with a jumbo fried shrimp, is a generous portion and seems to be a popular order.

How crispy is the tempura on the tendon at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam?
I ordered the tendon, and it arrived piled with a big fried shrimp and all kinds of vegetable tempura, so I was already satisfied just looking at it. It's exactly the Japanese tendon feel. Every piece was fried crisp, and the texture is really good.

The shrimp in particular is moist and plump inside but super crunchy outside, so biting into it was instantly satisfying. The vegetable tempura like eggplant and sweet pumpkin wasn't greasy, just lightly and cleanly fried, so I never got sick of it.
The sweet-salty tendon sauce drizzled on top went really well with the rice. The tempura is tasty on its own and even better with rice, a great combination.

Overall, anyone who loves crispy tempura will be happy here. It's the kind of taste I'll think of again whenever I want a tidy Japanese rice bowl in Yeonnam-dong, so my family will be showing up again.
