Today's post is about Cheonandang Dandae Branch, a walnut pastry (hodu-gwaja) spot in Cheonan. Hodu-gwaja is one of the first things people think of when they hear "Cheonan," and honestly, there are a ton of specialty shops around the city. I went to the branch near Dankook University — it's easy to get to, which is probably why so many people stop by.

Red bean butter and Lotus walnut pastries on display

Normally I'm all about the classic walnut pastry, but the red bean butter and Lotus ones on display looked so good. So this time I decided to switch it up and get both the red bean butter and Lotus versions. Since the red bean butter one has actual butter in it, they packed it carefully with cold insulation.

I bought the red bean butter and Lotus walnut pastries. Since the red bean butter version has butter in it, they added an ice pack for cold insulation — so you could carry it around safely even in summer.

When I opened the box, there was a sheet of parchment paper covering everything, and each pastry was individually wrapped in parchment underneath. There were even dividers inside, which made it look really nice for gifting. The price is reasonable but the packaging felt upscale — very satisfying.

The red bean and butter combo needs no explanation, and adding walnuts on top made it even nuttier and richer. I ate it about an hour after buying it, and thanks to the cold packaging, the butter hadn't melted at all.

There was a generous amount of red bean and walnut inside, plus a big chunk of butter, making it extra soft and nutty 💛 The balance of sweetness and nuttiness was really great in this red bean butter walnut pastry.

What the Lotus walnut pastry tastes like

The red bean butter one was tasty, but personally I was even more excited for the Lotus walnut pastry. Walnut pastry plus Lotus cookie flavor — how could that combo not be good?

The outside was coated thickly in Lotus cookie crumbs, and it was so good 🤎 I opened the box and demolished the whole thing almost instantly, haha.

How to store hodu-gwaja at home

Guide on how to store walnut pastries

⭐️Walnut pastries taste best the day you buy them. Leftovers can sit at room temperature for the same day, but after that: ✔️Refrigerated: 1–2 days ✔️Frozen: about 1 month In summer especially, they can spoil quickly, so it's worth being careful about storage. I had a bit of the red bean butter pastry left over, so I put it in an airtight container in the fridge and finished it the next day — still delicious.

Is Cheonandang Dandae Branch worth a stop?

I've always loved walnut pastries, so I was curious about the best hodu-gwaja spot in Cheonan. Cheonandang Dandae Branch was clean and had its own parking lot, so it was easy to visit. The owner was kind, prices were reasonable, and the packaging was so thorough it would make a great gift. If I'm ever near Dankook University again, I'd love to stop by once more.
