Seokchon Korean BBQ, red interior & snowflake beef: Sutbul Seonghwa
In short
Sutbul Seonghwa (숯불성화) is an aged beef charcoal BBQ and whisky restaurant on Songpa-daero 48-gil, near Seokchon Station and Seokchon Lake in Songpa, Seoul. In a calm dining room with red accents, the writer had the Seonghwa Platter (snowflake beef, cubed flower rib and wine-marinated rib fingers), Hanwoo beef doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and two bowls of rice, with staff grilling the beef at the table. Sutbul Seonghwa feels more like a restaurant than a typical Korean BBQ joint, making it a good fit for dates, blind dates and anniversary dinners.

Today I'm introducing Sutbul Seonghwa (숯불성화), where I enjoyed beef in a lovely atmosphere near Seokchon Lake. The meat, the interior, the service and the mood were all perfect. It felt like a restaurant rather than an ordinary BBQ place, so I'd recommend it for dates, blind dates and anniversary meals. Shall we take a look together?
Where is Sutbul Seonghwa and what kind of place is it?

Sutbul Seonghwa is an aged beef charcoal BBQ and whisky restaurant. It's close to Seokchon Lake and Songnidan-gil, so it works well as a date course, and a stroll around Seokchon Lake after the meal is easy. The exterior already felt upscale.

It looks clean and stylish in the daytime, but in the evening soft lighting turns it into a much more atmospheric space. It suited a special-day visit.
What are the interior and seating like at Sutbul Seonghwa?

The interior uses red as an accent color, with a calm, fine-dining feel. Stepping inside, I was surprised at how much more refined it was than I'd expected. Instead of the usual boisterous BBQ-joint noise, it was quiet and tidy, so it was easy to talk.
The staff were really kind too. From explaining the menu to grilling the meat and introducing the side dishes, they looked after us carefully, so we enjoyed the whole meal.

There are private rooms too, which seemed good for family gatherings, company dinners and other important meals. The seats are spacious and relaxed, so we ate comfortably. They also have a range of drinks, including wine, champagne and whisky, which would go nicely with beef.
Menu and what we ordered at Sutbul Seonghwa

Sutbul Seonghwa is a place where you can enjoy various cuts centered on aged beef. I was even more excited because they say they use top-grade Hanwoo (Korean beef) and premium beef ribs. We ordered the Seonghwa Platter, Hanwoo beef doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and 2 bowls of rice.
What side dishes and table setting come out?

The table gets salt, a special salt, wasabi and whole-grain mustard on small plates, along with several side dishes. Even before the meat arrived, I was really happy with the lineup of sides.
- Seasoned scallion salad (pajeori)
- Pickled onion
- Myeongi namul (pickled wild garlic-like greens)
- Shiitake with wasabi
- Seasoned celery
- Seasoned water dropwort (minari)
- White kimchi (baek-kimchi)
- Shredded radish salad (mu saengchae)

It's not just about the number of dishes; each one pairs well with the meat, so I kept reaching for more. A staff member explained every single side dish, and you could feel their confidence in the food.
Seonghwa Platter: what's in it and how each cut tastes

The Seonghwa Platter (성화모듬) has snowflake beef (nunkkotsal) 130g, cubed flower rib (kkakduk kkotgalbisal) 130g and wine-marinated rib fingers (neukgansal) 140g, so you can try several cuts at once. Each cut has its own charm, which made eating it fun.

Snowflake beef: rich marbling that melts in your mouth
They grilled the snowflake beef first. A staff member carefully grilled it over the charcoal right at the table and even cut it into bite-size pieces, so it was easy to just sit back and eat.
Snowflake beef is a richly marbled cut, and the tender texture was really impressive. It melted the moment it hit my mouth, and the deep beefy flavor came through well.

Personally, I liked it best with a little wasabi on top.

Cubed flower rib: thick cuts and juiciness
Next was the cubed flower rib. Thanks to the thick cuts, the chew was great and the juiciness stood out. With the first bite, juices spread through my mouth along with a rich, nutty flavor.

The outside had a subtle charcoal aroma and the inside was cooked medium to medium rare, so it was really delicious. The more I chewed, the richer the savory flavor became.
Wine-marinated rib fingers: chewy yet tender finish
Last, I tried the wine-marinated rib fingers. The grain of the meat gives it an appealing chew. The right amount of fat blended with the wine marinade for a deeper flavor.

Maybe thanks to the wine marinade, the meat felt much more tender and melted naturally in my mouth. All three cuts had their own personality, and I thought ordering the platter was absolutely the right call.

The mushrooms were grilled with a little butter and served bite-size. A faint butter aroma soaked in while the mushrooms kept their springy texture, and they were really good.
How is the Hanwoo beef doenjang stew at Sutbul Seonghwa?

The Hanwoo beef doenjang stew is so generous with beef that the ladle came up full of meat the moment I scooped. The stew I ordered as my meal was really delicious, and I was surprised by the amount of meat.

Doenjang stew is usually mostly broth, but this one is packed with Hanwoo, so it felt much more hearty. Maybe because the meat was already cooked once, it was really tender and fell apart easily in my mouth.
The broth was deep and rich too. The beef stock gave it more savory depth than an ordinary doenjang stew, and it was a great way to finish the meal.
What dessert do you get?

For dessert, Sutbul Seonghwa served Excellent (an ice cream). Even the dessert felt so fancy, haha. I ate a great meal and then properly enjoyed dessert too, what a day.
What occasions suit Sutbul Seonghwa?
I was happy with everything at Sutbul Seonghwa: the quality of the meat, the staff's service and the atmosphere. It feels closer to a restaurant than an ordinary BBQ place, so I think it suits dates, blind dates and special-day meals. If you're looking for a special place to eat near Seokchon Lake, take a look :)
