Daegu Jongno makchang restaurant with deodorizer on exit: Bongja

Today I'm sharing my review of Bongja Makchang Daegu Jongno Branch, located in Jongno, Daegu.

You can't talk about Daegu without talking about makchang (grilled beef intestine), and this time I visited a place that offered not just makchang but a solid lineup of side dishes and even bingsu (shaved ice). The value for money and variety made me think it'd be great for a meal with friends or a bigger group.

Bongja Makchang Daegu Jongno Branch is in a convenient spot for a meal or drinks around the Jongno area, so it was easy to get to.

Walking in, the whole place had a comfortable, cozy vibe that made for an easy meal, and the tables were fairly spacious so even a bigger group could sit comfortably.

So it seemed like a good spot to visit casually with friends, and also a good fit for a company dinner or group gathering.

Above all, the staff were so kind that I enjoyed the whole meal.

Bongja platter: raw pork belly and raw makchang with kimchi noodle soup

I ordered the Bongja set [raw pork belly + raw makchang] plus kimchi noodle soup. Chicken feet and seasoned makchang are also good, but I was craving plain makchang that day.

Looks so good, right, haha. It really is that good. There's a wide menu but everything is delicious. Out of everything, the kimchi noodle soup is the one I'd especially recommend!

It comes out in a surprisingly huge bowl, so it's great value too. The cool broth with the clean tang of kimchi paired well with the rich, savory makchang. Especially mid-meat-eating, when you crave something refreshing, the kimchi noodle soup clears your palate right up.

Unlimited steamed egg, bingsu and free ramen at the self-serve bar

One thing I loved about Bongja Makchang was the self-serve bar. It was great being able to freely grab side dishes and accompaniments while eating.

On top of that, being able to enjoy unlimited steamed egg and bingsu was impressive. And you order via tablet, so there's no need to feel awkward asking for more!! The soft, savory steamed egg went great with the makchang, and eating it in between bites worked even better than I expected.

And being able to finish the meal off with bingsu meant dessert was already taken care of. If you visit on a hot day, ending with a cool bingsu would be perfect.

Plus free ramen you can enjoy on top of it all!

The bracken, kimchi, and bean sprouts grilled alongside are the real kicker!

I didn't manage to get a photo, but the bingsu is genuinely delicious, so please try it. I really wanted one bingsu per person, but I was already too full to have more... I want it again.

Deodorizer spray and candy on the way out

At the very end, a staff member sprayed deodorizer on us right outside the restaurant and even gave us candy 💕 After eating makchang, the smell can linger on your clothes, so having deodorizer ready felt thoughtful, and getting candy on top of that kept me in a good mood all the way to the door.

It's these small details that oddly stick in your memory.

With the self-serve bar, ramen, steamed egg, and bingsu all available, this wasn't just a meal of makchang and done — there was real fun in picking and choosing different things to eat. Given the price, that's one of Bongja Makchang's strong points.
