Weekend drive hanjeongsik for two with mom in Paju: Simhaksan Deulkkot

In short

Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) ssambap restaurant on the slopes of Simhaksan in Paju, Gyeonggi. On a weekend drive with her mom, the writer ordered two deuljeongsik sets (20,000 won per person), which came with sweet pumpkin porridge, a half-and-half hot plate of stir-fried pork and squid, gangdoenjang (thick soybean paste), stone-pot rice and a self-serve bar of wrap vegetables. With nurungji (scorched-rice) tea and jeonbyeong crackers and ice cream to finish, Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap is an easy choice for a meal out with parents.

On a nice weekend, I took my mom for a refreshing drive out to Paju after a long while.

When you're out with your parents, the meal is the thing you worry about most, right? Since it was a rare outing with my mom, I wanted something clean and easy on the stomach, so I searched around a lot.

That's how I ended up at 'Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap,' already famous with tons of reviews and word-of-mouth as a hanjeongsik spot near Simhaksan.

Where is Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap, and what are its hours and parking?

Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap is located at 55-10 Dolgotsi-gil, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do. It sits at the foot of Simhaksan in Paju, so the air is fresh, and it's a great spot for a walk on the trail or a visit to Yakcheonsa Temple after your meal.

For anyone looking for a good ssambap restaurant near the Paju outlets, this is one I'd highly recommend — it's just 3 minutes by car from Lotte Premium Outlets Paju. It's only about 6 minutes from Paju Book City too, so the route works really well before or after shopping or a date.

Inside Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap: cozy dining rooms and the self-serve bar

Walking in, I was greeted by a warm, comfortable wood-tone interior, like a traditional tea house.

The whole place was kept really clean, and my mom liked it from the first impression. There were also baby chairs well-stocked for families with kids, so it would work great for a family gathering with children too.

One of the big perks here is the self-serve bar where you can help yourself to as much fresh wrap vegetables as you want.

Rather than the wrap vegetables coming pre-set on the table, the structure here is that you bring as much as you want from the self-serve bar.

Lettuce, perilla leaves, and other wrap vegetables from the self-serve bar

Beyond lettuce and perilla leaves, there were fresh vegetables like angelica and red chard kept clean and well-stocked at all times — a paradise for anyone who loves ssambap (wrap rice). There was also nostalgic jeonbyeong crackers and ice cream ready for dessert.

Ordering the deuljeongsik set for two at 20,000 won per person

Deulkkot Ssambap's set menu comes in just two options — 'deuljeongsik' (₩20,000 per person) and 'kkotjeongsik' (₩26,000 per person) — which felt like a sign of real specialization.

Description of the deuljeongsik set composition

We ordered two of the basic deuljeongsik sets, which come with stir-fried pork, stir-fried squid, doenjang stew, gangdoenjang, and stone-pot rice. For reference, the kkotjeongsik adds grilled atka mackerel and mackerel on top of the deuljeongsik spread.

Not long after ordering, a warm pumpkin porridge came out as a pre-meal appetizer.

It wasn't overly sweet and was smooth, which made it perfect for whetting the appetite before the meal. Soon after, a richly simmered doenjang stew and gangdoenjang loaded with mussels, along with various side dishes, were neatly set on the table. Both the gangdoenjang and the doenjang stew are refillable, so big eaters can enjoy a generous amount.

The half-and-half pork and squid hot plate, and how to build the best ssam

A bit later, the main dish arrived, beautifully arranged on a sizzling hot plate! Most ssambap restaurants usually serve just one of either pork or squid, but Deulkkot Ssambap serves stir-fried pork and spicy-sweet gochujang-seasoned stir-fried squid together, half and half.

Piling the stir-fried squid and pork together on a piece of lettuce or perilla leaf to wrap is truly delicious! The squid was springy, and the pork had a gentle smoky char, so with a spoonful of savory gangdoenjang wrapped in, the umami exploded.

From the seasoned eggplant to the seasoned greens, none of the side dishes were overly strong in flavor, which made them a perfect match with the fresh wrap vegetables.

Stone-pot rice and nurungji tea to finish the meal

What is the highlight of a hanjeongsik if not the rice, right? We scooped the piping-hot rice out of the freshly cooked stone pot into our bowls and left water in the pot to make nurungji (scorched rice tea).

Piling the glossy rice with the spicy stir-fried squid and pork, I emptied a whole bowl in no time. At the end, we finished cleanly with the warm nurungji we'd saved, topped with a bit of savory gangdoenjang or a piece of pork.

My stomach felt warm, and it really felt like I'd been treated to a proper meal. After finishing, we made sure to grab sweet ice cream and crispy jeonbyeong crackers from the self-serve bar for dessert.
