Value sashimi set by the king crab tanks in Jumunjin: Ilchul Hoetjip

In short

Ilchul Hoetjip is a sashimi and snow crab restaurant inside Jumunjin Fish Market in Gangneung, Gangwon. On a family trip, the value mixed sashimi platter cost 49,900 won as takeout and came with thick-cut halibut and rockfish plus a full spread of sides — sea squirt, shrimp, abalone and conch — eaten back at the accommodation. Not getting the spicy fish stew was the one letdown, but the portion and freshness at Ilchul Hoetjip were well worth the price.

Takeout photo of the value mixed sashimi platter from Ilchul Hoetjip in Jumunjin

My family all love sashimi, so whenever we travel we go straight for it haha.

This time we went to Gangneung and stopped by Jumunjin Fish Market, where we picked up a takeout order of the value mixed sashimi platter from the famous Ilchul Hoetjip.

We planned to eat it comfortably back at our stay, and it turned out to be a great call!

Where is Ilchul Hoetjip and how far is it inside Jumunjin Fish Market?

Walk a little way into Jumunjin Fish Market and Ilchul Hoetjip comes right into view.

Standing right at the entrance, the huge fish tank was the first thing that caught my eye.

There are so many fish in the tank! Watching the live fish swim nonstop, you could just feel how fresh they were.

But what surprised me even more was seeing squid alive and moving in the tank too. It's been a while since I saw squid moving that actively haha. I don't think it's even squid season right now, but apparently Ilchul Hoetjip can still serve fresh live squid sashimi!

And off to the side there are separate tanks for snow crab and king crab! The snow crabs were massive, and it looked like once you order, they go straight into the steamer right there on the spot. More than half the customers seemed to be eating snow crab even in this summer heat.

How big is Ilchul Hoetjip and what is the dining-room seating like?

The restaurant is huge too — besides the section you can see, there's another hall of the same size with tables on the opposite side! No wonder this place is known as a top spot for Jumunjin snow crab.

I'd also heard it's famous for Jumunjin king crab, and seeing it in person, the crabs really were plump and hefty, tank after tank.

What comes with the 49,900-won value mixed sashimi platter?

We ordered the value mixed sashimi platter, and honestly the contents were really solid for the price.

Thick-cut halibut and rockfish in the value mixed sashimi platter

At ₩49,900, I thought this amount of food was pretty good value.

It was mainly thick-cut halibut and rockfish, plus the sukiddashi (small side dishes) were packed with sea squirt, shrimp, and abalone.

I was especially lucky to watch the abalone being prepared right in front of me. Watching it get cleaned and cut in just a few quick knife strokes, I thought, 'is this even real?' — the hands moved incredibly fast.

Setting out the takeout sashimi at the accommodation: how did it taste?

As soon as we got back to our stay with the takeout, we set it all up right away. The sashimi was thick, so the chewy texture was great, and dipping it in chojang (vinegared chili paste) made it even better.

The tangy-sweet chojang paired really well with the sashimi in the mouth. I like dipping mine in chojang, while my mom next to me prefers ssamjang with garlic and chili, so the chojang basically all ended up being mine haha.

We all ate together as a family, and everyone agreed it was fresh — the sashimi disappeared in no time haha.

They also included sides like abalone, shrimp, conch, and sea squirt!

What was disappointing at Ilchul Hoetjip

If we'd eaten at the restaurant, we would have also gotten the spicy fish stew, and missing out on that was a little disappointing.

Still, for this price, this amount, and this freshness, I can confidently say the value was great.

Photos can't fully capture it, but the chewy texture was seriously amazing!

If you're looking for a sashimi restaurant in Jumunjin, Gangneung, especially if you've been curious about top spots for Jumunjin snow crab or Jumunjin king crab, give Ilchul Hoetjip a try. For anyone who wants to eat comfortably back at their stay, this is a great pick for takeout. We'll definitely stop by again next time we're in Gangneung.
