Aewol black pork smoked with water-sprayed charcoal: Nopo Dwaeji
In short
Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is a black pork restaurant near Gwakji Beach in Aewol, Jeju. Staff spray water onto the charcoal to raise smoke and keep basting the pre-seared pork in it while grilling the belly and neck separately, and black pork at 72,000 won plus tot (hijiki seaweed) mul-naengmyeon at 8,000 won came to 80,000 won for two. The tot naengmyeon is a clear cucumber cold-soup style that divided opinion, but the smoky flavor at Nopo Dwaeji Aewol made the walk along the Gwakji Beach coastal path worth it.

I've eaten a lot of black pork on Jeju Island. This time I found a place that felt genuinely different from the rest. The grilling method in particular was unusual. Instead of just laying the meat on the charcoal, the staff spray water on the coals to make a quick burst of smoke, then keep basting the meat in that smoke. As a result, the smoky aroma really soaked deep into the meat.

The friend I went with is still talking about it two weeks after the trip — "I suddenly want that black pork again." Haha. I'm dying to go back on my next Jeju trip too, so let me introduce it.

Do you need a reservation at Nopo Dwaeji Aewol?
Nopo Dwaeji Aewol takes reservations through Catch Table, and I'd strongly recommend booking ahead. Being a grilled-meat restaurant, turnover isn't exactly fast! When I asked staff, they said with about 3 parties ahead of you, the wait is roughly 20 minutes.

When we visited around 6pm on a weekday, the restaurant was already completely full. Even the outdoor waiting area was packed with people. There are about 16 tables inside — not a small place, but with so much demand it fills up fast in the evening.

Since we had a reservation, our table was already set up when we arrived.

The self-serve bar had garlic, kimchi, lettuce wraps and various sauces ready to go. It was easy to grab whatever side dish you needed while eating.

What we ordered: black pork 72,000 won, cold noodles 8,000 won
In one corner of the restaurant, trimmed cuts of meat were aging. We ordered black pork and cold noodles — ₩72,000 for the black pork plus ₩8,000 for the naengmyeon, ₩80,000 total.

The black pork arrives pre-seared. I've had black pork at plenty of spots on Jeju, but the grilling process here was quite unique.

How the water-sprayed charcoal smokes the black pork
Nopo Dwaeji Aewol's grilling method starts with staff spraying water on the charcoal with a spray bottle. Smoke instantly billows up. They use that exact moment to keep smoking the meat. Repeating this process is how the smoky flavor gets layered into the pork. That's probably why the meat had such an intense charcoal aroma — not just a charred taste, but the smoke itself felt deeply infused.

Staff grill the pork for you at the table
Another thing I liked: the meat isn't just thrown on the grill for you to handle yourself. Staff watched the doneness and size and grilled it for us directly — belly on the outer edge of the grill, neck meat on the inner side.

They cut it into bite-size pieces and got the doneness just right, so all you have to do is eat it the moment it's ready. Personally, I preferred the belly. Next time I'd ask if I can just order belly and go heavier on that.

This one's the neck meat!! Bite into it and the juices burst out — dipped in melt-jeot, pure heaven 🚓💓😤

They grilled the neck meat first, so while we worked through that, they kept carefully grilling the belly.

Juicy black pork with a smoky finish 🥺💓
Bite into a piece of belly and the juices burst out along with that smoky aroma rising up. The thick-cut meat had great texture too. Delicious dipped deep in melt-jeot, and just as good wrapped up with dressed lettuce and side dishes.

If you're a fan of melt-jeot with your Jeju black pork, you'll be satisfied here. Dip a thick slice of belly deep in melt-jeot, pile it on lettuce, add some dressed greens, and eat it in one bite... just pure bliss ㄱㄱ🤤

What does tot (hijiki seaweed) naengmyeon taste like?
After all that meat, we also ordered naengmyeon (cold noodles). Nopo Dwaeji Aewol's naengmyeon was so-so — not bad, just different from the style I usually go for.

Mainland naengmyeon often has a clear broth with a bit of red seasoning mixed in, but this one was very clear-style. And since it's tot (hijiki seaweed) noodles, the noodles themselves had a slightly firmer chewiness.

Overall it had a refreshing, clear feel like cold cucumber soup, which made for a clean finish. That said, I personally prefer the red-based version, so next time I'd probably order bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed noodles) instead. If your naengmyeon preference runs toward bold seasoning like mine, I'd recommend going bibim.

Is Nopo Dwaeji Aewol walkable from Gwakji Beach?
We spent time around Aewol and walked along the coastal path to reach Nopo Dwaeji Aewol. If the weather's decent, it's a nice spot for a beach walk before or after the meal. Personally, I think this is worth deliberately walking to from Aewol — not just a place you'd stop at because it happens to be nearby, but one you'd seek out specifically if you're craving black pork. So I'd recommend it to anyone hunting for a black pork restaurant near Gwakji Beach too. If you're looking for good Jeju black pork around Aewol or Gwakji, put this one on your shortlist.

Final verdict on black pork in Aewol 💓
I've had black pork many times across Jeju, but what stuck with me most from this visit was, without a doubt, the smoky flavor. Not just grilling pre-seared black pork over charcoal, but spraying water on the coals to keep generating smoke and basting the meat in it continuously — that was a clear point of difference. 💓 If I'm looking for a black pork restaurant in Aewol, I'd choose this place again, and I'd recommend it to anyone searching for black pork near Gwakji Beach too!!
I'll be booking ahead again on my next Jeju trip. And this time, I'm definitely trying the bibim naengmyeon. Anyway, if you're after a good grilled-meat restaurant on Jeju, visit without hesitation. It was genuinely delicious. 😊
