Korean BBQ restaurant in Wirye, Seongnam: BMS 9 beef at Umadang
In short
Umadang Wirye Main Branch (우마당 위례본점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant across from the Starbucks at Wirye Central Plaza in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, serving BMS No. 9 top-grade hanwoo beef aged 15 days. For Chuseok the writer ordered flower short rib, hanging tender and tenderloin, all seared over charcoal by staff and rested before serving, then finished with cold buckwheat noodles and vanilla ice cream topped with Maldon salt. For an anniversary hanwoo dinner without the trip to Gangnam, Umadang Wirye Main Branch is the answer.

BMS grade 9 or higher tup-plus Korean beef, wet-aged for 15 days before selection — the same grade supplied to five-star hotel Korean beef restaurants. The business started as a butcher's restaurant in Munjeong-dong in 1993 and is now run by the second generation.
Reviews even mention getting the same quality of Korean beef you'd find in Gangnam, but for half the price.
How do you not go? Umadang Wirye Honjeom.

Chuseok! Time to eat the best food I know. There aren't that many candidates — premium beef, premium sashimi. This time, beef.

Walk into the alley behind Olive Young from Wirye Central Plaza and you'll find Umadang, with its sleek black interior. Wirye Central Plaza is basically Wirye's meat district (haha), so pork restaurants are everywhere — but a tup-plus Korean beef restaurant is genuinely rare!

Right in front of the Starbucks at Wirye Central Plaza. At the entrance, gold-like Korean beef sits aging.
Inside the dining room and what comes with the table
A setup built purely to let the beef's flavor shine — the best-quality Korean beef restaurant in Wirye.

The interior is done in classy black tones. It seems to aim for upscale but comfortable. The side dishes come plated individually in an elegant setup. This area of Wirye is basically a bedroom town, so completely a neighborhood spot! A restaurant for a Wirye wedding anniversary, a meal with your parents in Wirye, or — hmm, thinking of proposing? Whoever you bring on a Wirye date here will be very happy.

The banchan (side dishes) lineup includes kimchi, seokbakji and mustard leaf pickles, perilla leaves, wild garlic chives, garlic, baek-kimchi, salted pollack roe, dongchimi, and cucumber pickles. To go with the meat: salt, shiitake mushroom sauce, mustard, and wasabi. A generous spread.

Which cuts we ordered: flower short rib, hanging tender and tenderloin
This visit, we ordered two cuts at Umadang Wirye Honjeom: flower rib flap and hanging tender. The menu items come as 150g portions, plated with mushrooms, eggplant, pineapple, and asparagus. Since the cuts available can vary day to day, be sure to check with the owner.

As you'd expect from an owner whose family has run a Korean beef restaurant for two generations, this is top-tier meat. You'd be hard-pressed to find beef this good anywhere in Wirye — top class even including Seongnam and Songpa.

Try the sashimi with wasabi as an appetizer too — it's so tender it practically melts. A charcoal brazier gets set up at the table.

How the staff sear the beef over charcoal, then rest it
Because the beef here is so precious, a skilled staff member does the grilling for you. After searing the surface over charcoal, the meat is rested in the kitchen to lock in the juices.
A quick note: what does resting the meat mean?
Resting means letting grilled meat sit for a moment before slicing it. It reduces the juices that run out when cut, keeping the meat moist. You can't afford to lose a single drop of that juice — that's what makes the best grilled meat taste the way it does.

The exterior is grilled just enough to give it texture and savory depth. The staff's service is excellent.

One or two cuts just wasn't enough, so we ordered tenderloin too.

There were plenty of accompaniments, but that day the salted pollack roe and salt were what really got me. 'Delicious' doesn't quite cover it. We snacked on asparagus and pineapple in between to help digestion too.

The grilled vegetables — eggplant and mushrooms — were excellent too. Slice into the charcoal-seared, rested BMS NO.9 premium Korean beef with a knife and take a big bite... a feast like this really should be shared with someone special.

Fifteen days of aging means the deep flavor of the meat is present to the fullest. That review about getting the same quality as Gangnam for half the price really sticks with me. This is now my personal benchmark for Korean beef — Umadang Wirye Honjeom.

Finishing the meal with cold buckwheat noodles
Lots of reviews mentioned the raw beef cold noodles, but I'm a plain mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) person. I ordered it even though I was already full, and... I drank the broth to the last drop. Turns out I did have room after all. There was plenty of boiled Korean beef piled on top too.
There's dessert too: vanilla ice cream with Maldon salt
Call over a staff member at the end of the meal and they'll bring out vanilla ice cream topped with Maldon salt.

Sweet and salty harmony. A fresh, fragrant way to end a meal at a premium Korean beef restaurant.
Is Umadang Wirye Main Branch worth it? Final verdict
I'll take charge of Wirye locals' anniversary dinners! Tup-plus Korean beef, right in the neighborhood.
I used to think you had to go all the way to Jamsil, Gangnam, or Cheongdam for good Korean beef even from nearby areas — but here's a tup-plus Korean beef restaurant you can easily reach through Wirye Plaza, with family or with a partner, without going far. The target audience is clear.
A household might coexist with as much friction as happiness, but Korean beef can dissolve a good chunk of that. Run by an owner whose family has handled only premium Korean beef for two generations since 1993, this is Seongnam's premium tup-plus Korean beef restaurant — Umadang Wirye Honjeom.
