Chungju pork BBQ with scallion jjolmyeon, self-serve sides: Hanmaeum

Hanmaeum Meat Restaurant Chungju Hoam branch is an aged-meat butcher restaurant in Hoam-dong, Chungju, on the 2nd floor of the No Brand building across from the community center. On this visit the half-pig set (38,000 won), with five cuts (pork belly, skin-on belly, neck, jowl and gabrisal), came with yukhoe bibimbap. Scallion jjolmyeon, steamed egg and doenjang stew were served as standard sides, and more sides were available at a self-serve bar. Hanmaeum Meat Restaurant Chungju Hoam branch has tasty sides and sauces plus a kids' playground, making it a good Korean BBQ pick for family meals.

Buak-ro, Icheon burger lunch: wasabi shrimp & chicken at Gladyburger

Gladyburger Icheon Jungri District branch is a handmade burger restaurant on Buak-ro in Icheon, Gyeonggi. For a lunch at the end of a holiday, the writer ordered the Original Chicken Burger, Wasabi Shrimp Burger, Chili Whole Mozzarella sticks and chicken tenders with garlic sauce. Gladyburger also has a large parking lot behind the shop, high chairs and sofa seats, which made for a relaxed stay. Gladyburger is a solid pick for a filling Icheon lunch, with crispy fried patties and a good range of sauces.

Nurungji ginseng chicken soup in Chungju before Chobok: Lee Woo-cheol

Lee Woo-cheol Hanbang Nurungji Samgyetang Chungju Hoam is a samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) restaurant on Sacheongae 5-gil in Hoam-dong, Chungju, Chungbuk. Just before Chobok, the first of the summer 'dog days', the writer ordered the signature herbal nurungji samgyetang and was pleased with chicken so tender the bones came away easily and a nutty, thick broth enriched with nurungji (scorched rice). With no days off, no break time and an open-lot car park right next door, Lee Woo-cheol Hanbang Nurungji Samgyetang is an easy stop for a boknal samgyetang meal in Chungju.

Office lunch conveyor sushi in Seolleung: yukhoe & salmon, Sushi Ian N

Sushi Ian N Seolleung Station is a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building near Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul, where every plate costs ₩1,990. Gangnam Station café, free sedan parking & decaf latte: Selected Nicks

Selected Nicks is a large café near Gangnam Station in Seoul, at 37 Teheran-ro 4-gil, that occupies an entire building and offers visitors free parking in its own lot. The writer visited in the late afternoon, had a café latte switched to decaf, a dolce latte and a cookie on the 3rd floor, and noted that only sedans up to a Genesis G80 can enter the Selected Nicks lot, along with rates at nearby paid lots for SUVs. Selected Nicks is a great choice if you drive to Gangnam Station and want a comfortable coffee shop in Seoul to relax or work in.

Sinnonhyeon bakery café taking relief fund payments: Bakerist Brown

Bakerist Brown is a large bakery café on Gangnam-daero 102-gil, between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station in Seoul, filling a whole building from basement level 1 to the 3rd floor. The blogger browsed Bakerist Brown's pastries, egg tarts, madeleines and Dubai, pollack roe, crème brûlée and melon salt bread, then tried the signature salt cream coffee, a café latte and the Gangnam Sand set. Verdict: the roomy space and sweet-salty cream coffee make Bakerist Brown a satisfying meetup spot near Gangnam Station.

With roomy floors that each have their own mood and a strong baked-goods lineup, Upper and Under is a dessert café near Sinnonhyeon Station worth recommending for long conversations.

Sosabeol cockle restaurant in Pyeongtaek, spicy bibimbap: Kkomak Manse

Kkomak Manse Pyeongtaek Manse-ro Main Branch (꼬막만세 평택만세로본점) is a Korean restaurant specializing in cockle dishes in Sosabeol, on Manse-ro in Pyeongtaek. On a late-afternoon visit, the writer ordered the family set of Manse seasoned cockles (medium), 3 cockle pancakes and spicy cockle bibimbap, and especially loved the fully shelled seasoned cockles and the thick cockle pancake with enoki mushrooms. Something About Coffee is a large three-floor dessert café on Gangnam-daero 102-gil near Gangnam Station in Seoul. Air-conditioned pork BBQ in Pyeongtaek for a hot summer: Ihwajeong

Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi is a large charcoal-grill Korean BBQ restaurant with a big parking lot, on Manse-ro near Sosabeol in Jukbaek-dong, Pyeongtaek. On a hot summer day, under strongly blasting air conditioning, the writer grilled 3 servings of roughly 2cm-thick marinated pork over charcoal and finished with bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles), enjoying a good balance of gentle sweetness and saltiness and rich juices. Ihwajeong is an easy pick for a summer family meal when you want to eat Korean BBQ in comfort.

Seoulsup dessert café at night: tiramisu soufflé outdoors, 5to7

5to7 Seongsu Main Branch is a soufflé dessert café on Seoulsup 2-gil in Seongdong, Seoul. On an evening visit, a tiramisu soufflé, Sunny Peach Tea and a decaf café latte were ordered; the soufflé came out about 20 minutes later and was enjoyed at an outdoor table in the cool night air. The 5to7 tiramisu soufflé has cream that isn't too sweet and a bittersweet finish, so it never gets cloying down to the last bite.
