Why Jongdal Sudatteul for our last dinner in Jeju?

Jongdal Sudatteul (종달수다뜰) is a Jeju hansik (Korean set meal) restaurant on Yongnunioreum-ro in Gujwa-eup, and it's where we went for dinner on the last day of our trip. We'd just finished a fun day splashing around at Hado Beach, and the sadness of the trip ending was creeping in. Since it was our last meal, I wanted something that really tasted like Jeju, and after some searching we ended up here.

To get to the point: it was satisfying enough to trust with our final dinner. Jongdal Sudatteul is well known as a restaurant near Yongnuni Oreum, and also as a restaurant near the Jeju rail bike and in Jongdal-ri. If you're planning a trip to east Jeju, I'd recommend it as a stop where you can sightsee and get a great meal too. 😊

What are the exterior, yard and parking like?

Jongdal Sudatteul is a white building with a green lawn yard, and the parking lots are roomy both in front and behind. The first thing I noticed when we arrived at this Yongnuni Oreum favorite was how pretty the exterior is.

A white building and green grass. It felt like we'd arrived at a Jeju-style café. The yard was gorgeous too.

Jongdal Sudatteul yard with hydrangeas and terrace benches

Hydrangeas were in bloom and there are terrace benches, so it looks like a nice place to sit for a bit after eating. The kid was busy running around the yard and the adults were busy taking photos. 😆

Pets are allowed too, so anyone traveling around Jeju with a dog will be glad to hear that!

The parking lot is big too, with plenty of space in front and in the back, so we didn't have to worry about parking at all. 👍

Inside Jongdal Sudatteul: is it okay for kids and families?

Inside, the halls are split on both sides of a central kitchen, with seating from tables for four up to group tables, so it looks workable for family or group meals. High chairs and aprons are provided too. Let's step inside.

The halls are divided on either side of a central kitchen, and the inside was much bigger than I expected. With everything from four-person tables to group seating, it looked fine for family meals and group gatherings alike.

High chairs and aprons are available, so eating with a little one looked stress-free.

Soy-marinated crab at the self-bar?

At the Jongdal Sudatteul self-bar you can help yourself to extra side dishes, and the soy-marinated crab (ganjang gejang) is on the self-bar too. This surprised me the most. Wait a second... why is ganjang gejang at a self-bar? 🫢🫢 I'd expected kimchi or bean sprouts at most, but being able to eat soy crab freely? Honestly amazing. 👍👍

What comes in the Jeju hansik at Jongdal Sudatteul?

The signature Jeju hansik comes with grilled hairtail, dombe-gogi (boiled pork slices), braised mackerel, seafood ttukbaegi (earthenware pot stew), abalone jang (soy-marinated abalone) and marinated crab, all on one table. The second my husband saw the lineup he looked at me and said, "If we order this, don't we get all of Jeju's food?" Haha. And looking at it, he's right.

  • ✔️ Grilled hairtail
  • ✔️ Dombe-gogi
  • ✔️ Braised mackerel
  • ✔️ Seafood ttukbaegi stew
  • ✔️ Abalone jang
  • ✔️ Marinated crab

Jeju's signature foods are all gathered on one table. 😋 There were four adults and one child, and we ordered two portions of Jeju hansik and two abalone stone-pot rice + grilled hairtail sets. When the spread arrived, our jaws dropped.

Wait, this is for two people...? 😳 The table was so full that I couldn't fit it all in one photo.

First spoonful after the beach: seafood ttukbaegi

The first thing we reached for was the seafood ttukbaegi with blue crab and clams. After swimming at Hado Beach, I was craving something hot and brothy. The moment I took a spoonful, I blurted out, "Ahh, this is it!" 🤣 The deep, refreshing broth from the crab and clams was so good. It'd be perfect as a hangover soup too!

Braised mackerel with aged kimchi

Next was the braised mackerel. The well-reduced sauce had soaked into the fish nicely. The flesh was tender and the aged kimchi (mukeunji) was cooked down soft, so it was really good. A bite of mackerel with a bite of kimchi on top, and the rice just disappears.

Dombe-gogi, which the kid ate well too

You can't talk about Jeju without dombe-gogi, of course.

Dombe-gogi (boiled pork slices) from the Jeju hansik

The dombe-gogi here had a lovely moist yet chewy texture. It was clean with no gamey smell, so even our kid ate it well. Dipped lightly in salt it's great, wrapped in a leaf it's great. However you eat it, it's delicious.

Rice-thief abalone jang and tidy side dishes

The abalone jang was really good too. The salty, faintly sweet sauce had soaked well into the abalone. On top of rice it's a true "rice thief"! 👍 The basic side dishes were all neat and tidy too: bracken, bean sprouts, braised fish cake, kimchi and more. It's a hansik meal, so the fun is in mixing and matching bites.

Even now that the trip is over, I keep thinking about this Jeju hansik. 👍

How was the abalone stone-pot rice + grilled hairtail set?

The abalone stone-pot rice at Jongdal Sudatteul is rice cooked with abalone innards, topped with grilled abalone, Gujwa carrots and sweet potato, and the set comes with grilled hairtail. Here's the abalone stone-pot rice and grilled hairtail set.

Jongdal Sudatteul abalone stone-pot rice and grilled hairtail set

The abalone stone-pot rice is nutty rice cooked with abalone innards, generously topped with golden grilled abalone.

Gujwa carrots and sweet potato are in there too, so it looked pretty and tasted great. With the first spoonful, the chewy abalone and the rich nuttiness of the innard rice went so well together. It felt like a proper health boost!

And here's the grilled hairtail from the set. The golden-grilled hairtail was nicely salty, just right, and even our 7-year-old ate it happily. Alternating the nutty abalone innard rice with the mild grilled hairtail, the two pair really well.

Finishing with nurungji and sungnyung

And of course the finish is nurungji (scorched rice). I scraped up every bit left in the stone pot and drank the sungnyung (scorched-rice tea), and we ended up so full and satisfied. This is the Korean dessert, after all!

Meal finished with stone-pot nurungji and sungnyung

After a whole day of playing hard with the kid, sharing good food with the family and sipping a drink melted away all the fatigue. It was a satisfying dinner that wrapped up our last night in Jeju on a high. 😊

After the meal, there was a Gujwa carrot juice event going on too. If you're visiting, keep it in mind and take advantage of the perk!

Jongdal Sudatteul in a nutshell

  • ✅ All of Jeju's food in one go! A hansik spot made for travelers
  • ✅ The abalone stone-pot rice is a one-bowl health tonic
  • ✅ Big parking lot and a pleasant dining room, great for family meals
  • ✅ Spacious, comfortable restaurant that even allows pets
