Beomeo-dong, Daegu Korean restaurant: flame show at the open kitchen

In short

Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch is a fire-grilled spicy pork stir-fry restaurant on Beomeocheon-ro in Beomeo-dong, Suseong, Daegu. Seated facing the open kitchen, the writer watched the meat get seared over a powerful flame, then ate squid pork (ojingeo jeyuk, spicy pork and squid stir-fry) for two at 14,000 won per person, with rice at 1,000 won extra, for 30,000 won in total. The squid pork arrived on a sizzling iron plate and stayed hot to the end, making Banwoldang Buja Sikdang a safe, crowd-pleasing Korean meal in Beomeo-dong.

Jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork), the soul food of Korean guys! Even women fall for it! A golden-ratio sauce anyone of any age will love, real fire-grilled pork served boiling on a hot iron plate, so it stays warm and tender the whole meal 🙂 Beomeo culvert-road favorite, Banwoldang Buja Sikdang

What kind of restaurant is Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch?

Banwoldang Buja Sikdang (반월당부자식당) is a Korean restaurant serving fire-grilled iron-plate pork stir-fry, with just 2 locations in Daegu. The Suseong Branch on Beomeocheon-ro, along the Beomeo culvert road, is the only branch. The recipe comes from a mother who ran a Korean restaurant for 36 years, and the fire-grilled pork is said to satisfy both old-style country flavor and today's tastes. It's known as a holy ground for jeyuk-bokkeum in Daegu!

🙂 The main branch is in Banwoldang and this is the only other one, so maybe that's why the signs of the two even look almost the same, shape and lettering, haha

Is parking easy at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch?

Parking was easy, since the restaurant is on the Beomeo culvert road, which I liked. One hour of parking fees at the roadside public car park is covered.

How to avoid the lunch wait in Beomeo-dong

The restaurant fills up around 12 noon, so if you arrive just 20–30 minutes early you won't have to wait. I'd read there might be a full house or a queue at lunchtime, so I went a bit earlier and it was fine. Right at 12, just like the reviews said, people poured in all at once and the place started filling up. Cinderella magic, haha

Not really a secret tip for beating the queue, more like a fine-dust-level tip.. but if you can, avoid 12 sharp and come just a little earlier!

Squid pork for two: price and how to order

At Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch, I ordered the bestselling squid pork (ojebokkeum) for two plus 2 bowls of rice, and the bill came to ₩30,000. You order on a kiosk at your seat, which was convenient.

  • Oje (squid pork) ₩14,000 × 2 people
  • Rice ₩1,000 × 2
  • Total ₩30,000

Rice is separate from the pork stir-fry, and it comes as black rice.

How clean was the restaurant?

The place was clean overall. The spoon-and-chopstick wrappers had the Ansim Sikdang (government-certified safe restaurant) mark, haha. The wrap vegetables were kept in stainless steel trays with lids fully closed, and they'd been washed cleanly. I especially liked that there were small, tender baby lettuce leaves among them.

The flame show from the open-kitchen seat

The kitchen is open, so you can watch the pork being seared over strong flame right in front of you. I didn't plan it, but I happened to get a seat facing the open kitchen, which turned out great, haha. I got a front-row view of the burning fire-grilled pork show!

This goes way beyond gently lighting it with a torch: cannon-like blasts of fire, almost like a dragon breathing flame in CG! Do you have to fire-grill this hard these days to be Daegu's number one jeyuk-bokkeum place? A dopamine explosion of a cooking process, the fire flavor can't possibly be bad 🫢

Does the iron-plate squid pork stay hot to the end?

The squid pork at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch comes out on a boiling iron plate and stays hot until the moment I finished my rice 🫢 It's not just keeping warm, it feels like it keeps on simmering, a real iron-plate grill. The meat never cooled down and stayed warm to the end, which I loved. The raw enoki mushrooms that came with it could be cooked in the leftover heat too.

Squid pork sauce and how the squid tastes

There was so much sauce that you couldn't even see the pork and squid. It's not sticky, a clean secret jeyuk sauce at just the right consistency for mixing with rice 🙂 Mixed with the rich fat from the tender pork, it's a chili-powder sauce that's nutty, spicy and full of savory depth.. ❤️

The squid in the pork was plump and moist too. For big squid it wasn't tough at all, really good squid. So tender~ 🦑🦑🦑

Black rice, complimentary soybean stew and the verdict

The black rice at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch uses Angye rice from Uiseong, famous in the Gyeongbuk region, and the rice itself is a total rice thief 🙂 I debated whether to order another bowl. Tasty rice, tasty pork, and even the complimentary cheonggukjang-doenjjigae (fermented soybean stew) was heavenly. You end up wolfing down the rice, the national holy trinity complete!

Jeyuk, the soul food of Korean guys~ and does it win over women too? Yes, that taste. A delicious Korean meal that people of all ages and genders can enjoy. If you're looking for a Korean restaurant in Beomeo-dong, Daegu, there's nothing better, and I totally recommend it if you want a meal on the Beomeo culvert road 🫢 No divided opinions, a no-fail place ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
