What kind of café is La Cuesta?

La Cuesta is a large bakery café in Gonjiam, Gwangju, near Gonjiam Resort and Hwadam Forest. I visited over the weekend. It's known as a drive destination, and since it's a very big bakery café, it's popular for family outings and dates too.

Parking and exterior at La Cuesta

The first thing I noticed on arrival was the huge parking lot. Lots of visitors come by car, so there's plenty of room and parking was easy. The building has glass walls that give it an open feel, and it blends nicely with the green scenery around it, so my expectations were up from the first impression.

Indoor seating and atmosphere

Inside, it's spacious and comfortable, as you'd expect from a big bakery café. There are different kinds of seats on each floor, so it works whether you come alone or with family or a group, and you can relax either way. The natural light pouring in through the big windows made the interior feel brighter and more comfortable.

What's on the bakery menu?

One of the biggest charms of La Cuesta is the wide range of bakery items, like meju bread (a loaf shaped like a fermented soybean block), salt bread and cream bread. The display was full of freshly baked bread, and there were so many kinds that I had a hard time choosing. From signature items to sweet desserts, bread lovers should be happy with the lineup.

Coffee and bread, plus brunch and pasta

I ordered coffee with some bakery items. The coffee was clean yet nutty, and it went well with the bread. A piece of warm bread with a cup of coffee really gave me that relaxed weekend feeling. Besides coffee, they also serve brunch and pasta dishes, so it looks like a good place to visit for a meal too.

The outdoor terrace and garden

The indoor space was nice, but personally my favorite part was the outdoors. There's a terrace and a garden-style area, so on a nice day it's lovely to sit outside with a coffee. Taking a break while looking at the greenery gave me a different kind of charm from city cafés.

Good for kids and family outings?

I saw lots of families who had come with children, and the big space meant it never felt cramped, which I counted as a plus. I could see why it's so often mentioned as a family outing spot around Gwangju and Gonjiam.

If you're looking for a café to stop at after Hwadam Forest or Gonjiam Resort, I'd recommend La Cuesta. It has a big space, a wide variety of bakery items and a relaxed atmosphere, so it's great for a short break on a drive, and satisfying for spending time over brunch and coffee.
