Why I picked The Bangpaje among Millak-dong sashimi restaurants
The Bangpaje (방파제) is a raw fish and seafood restaurant I chose while looking for a classy meal along the Millak-dong sashimi street in Gwangalli, Busan. Whenever I want to see the sea or need some healing, I head to Busan, so I end up visiting several times a year. I always want to go back.
Every visit shows me a new charm, but the Gwangalli and Millak-dong area in particular makes me feel all fluttery and soft inside. The Millak-dong sashimi street is so famous that you'd think restaurants are no worry, but with so many places, I got greedy: "This time I want a properly classy place and a meal with no misses."

So I did a lot of legwork and stormed the search engines, and found a classy restaurant I could trust without agonizing over what to eat, then ran straight there! It's a truly local landmark that has guarded the sea in front of Gwangalli since 1982, and it was far more satisfying than I expected. Let me walk you through the record of that delightful meal.

What is The Bangpaje? A "Century Store" open since 1982
The Bangpaje sits right across from Millak The Market in Millak-dong, Gwangalli, a sashimi and seafood restaurant that has held the same spot for over 40 years, passed down through generations. It reportedly carries both the Busan city designation as a local food restaurant and the "Baeknyeon Gage" (century store) certification from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. So many new restaurants open and quietly vanish these days, right? Maybe that's why the presence and depth radiating from the exterior were no joke.
Listed in the Blue Ribbon Survey four years in a row! The pride of Millak-dong, proof of taste and quality.
It's also been listed in the Blue Ribbon Survey, the compass of gourmets, four years in a row, so my trust shot up before I'd even eaten. They say they prioritize wild-caught fish and pick only the freshest seasonal ingredients based on the day's sea conditions and the season, so I was sure it couldn't be bad.
Floor layout: 1st-floor tables, 2nd-floor rooms, 3rd-floor banquet hall
The restaurant is neatly organized over three floors. The 1st floor has tables for casually enjoying single dishes and courses such as hoe-bibimbap (raw fish rice bowl), mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) and assorted sashimi, and the 3rd floor is a large banquet hall for big group gatherings and events. And the star, the 2nd floor, is split off into rooms for small gatherings or private course meals, so we booked ahead and were guided there.

What was the 2nd-floor private room like?
The 2nd-floor private room at The Bangpaje is shut off from outside noise, so your party can eat in peace. These days I prefer a place where my group can chat quietly over a meal rather than a loud, chaotic sashimi joint. Especially on a Busan trip, when you want to make a special memory with someone precious, the power of the space really matters.

A perfectly independent space without interruptions: healing gourmet dining in a private room.
The moment I stepped into the 2nd-floor private room, the cozy yet clean, uncluttered and upscale interior made me feel like a treasured guest. With the soft Gwangalli mood spreading beyond the window, and being completely cut off from the surrounding noise, we could enjoy the food at our own pace, which was a huge plus. It struck me that for a formal occasion or a filial trip with your parents, there's nowhere better.
How was the seasonal sashimi set (₩58,000 per person)?
🐟 A table made of time and care: the seasonal assorted sashimi set (₩58,000)

What I ordered at The Bangpaje that day was its pride, the seasonal assorted sashimi set (제철모둠회 한상세트, ₩58,000 per person). The price may feel a little high, but given the quality of the side dishes (skidashi) and the main sashimi, I actually thought, "Is it okay to be treated this well for this price?" It felt like great value.
The seasonal sashimi, prepared with care after ordering, was overwhelming from the looks alone. Perhaps because it had gone through an aging stage that respects the passing of time, the moist, translucent sheen on the surface was something special. I first tried a thick slice with no sauce at all, and wow... a chewy texture with every bite and that distinctive sweetness spread richly through my mouth.
There was none of the toughness typical of live fish sashimi; the savory depth of aged sashimi, soft yet springy, was simply art. Since they build the set only from the tastiest fish of each season, it felt like the deep flavor of the Busan sea was moved onto one table. The accompanying seafood and dishes were all mild and refined too, so I enjoyed a perfect gourmet race down to the last bite without ever getting tired of it.

Who is The Bangpaje recommended for?
I recommend The Bangpaje to travelers looking for a no-miss local sashimi restaurant in Busan, to anyone planning a meal for parents or a formal gathering, and to anyone who wants to taste proper aged sashimi. Even among Millak-dong sashimi restaurants it has a unique aura! I especially recommend it to these people.
- Travelers looking for a genuinely local place in Busan with no misses: as a century store open since 1982 and a Blue Ribbon-listed restaurant, it offers reliable flavor and trust to anyone tired of sashimi places that cater to passing tourists.
- People treating their parents or planning a formal gathering: the neat table setting, sincere service and the depth of the aged sashimi make it a perfect place to show gratitude to people who matter.

Fresh, chewy texture

- Gourmets who want the real essence of aged sashimi and seasonal seafood: you get a polished plate of mostly wild-caught seasonal fish chosen by sea conditions, combined with careful aging.
The Bangpaje verdict, plus location and booking tips
📝 My extremely subjective, paid-with-my-own-money verdict. The Bangpaje is right across from Millak The Market, so it's very easy to get to and to explore Gwangalli Beach or the hot spots before and after your meal. I come to Busan every time, but thanks to The Bangpaje, this trip feels even more special and memorable.

The Bangpaje in Millak-dong moved me by capturing the value of time and care. On my next Busan trip I'll book here again without hesitation. If you want to be treated and healed in a very upscale atmosphere, do go.
- 📍 Location: near Gwangalli Beach, Busan, across from Millak The Market (by public transport, search "광안리 방파제 횟집")
- 💡 Explorer's tip: for an important gathering or course meal, I strongly recommend booking the 2nd-floor private room in advance! The seasonal assorted sashimi set is the sure-win menu.

I'm definitely coming here on my next Busan trip too. It's a very upscale Millak-dong sashimi restaurant with private rooms, and I want to come back again, The Bangpaje. ^^
