Seafood jjim near Asan Terminal for spice-shy eaters: Sinseong Agujjim
In short
Sinseong Agujjim Asan Branch (신성아구찜 아산점) is a monkfish and seafood jjim (braised seafood stew) restaurant in Mojong-dong, Asan, near Asan Terminal. The writer's husband can't handle much spice but wanted seafood jjim, so the two of them ordered a small seafood jjim at spice level 1 and finished with fried rice. The pot was packed with octopus, squid, abalone, crab, mussels and shrimp, and the sauce was mild yet kept them coming back for more. Because Sinseong Agujjim Asan Branch lets you choose a spice level starting from level 1, it's a good seafood jjim spot to visit with someone who struggles with heat.

A great Mojong-dong eatery in Asan for seafood jjim (steamed seafood stew) and agujjim (spicy monkfish stew): Sinseong Agujjim, near Asan Terminal.
Why my spice-shy husband wanted seafood jjim
Sinseong Agujjim Asan Branch (신성아구찜 아산점) is my regular seafood jjim spot, the place I visit whenever I crave something spicy. My husband, who normally can't handle spicy food, suddenly said he wanted spicy seafood jjim. The moment I heard that, my favorite secret restaurant popped into my head. Sinseong Agujjim menu and tips for adding extra seafood
The menu at Sinseong Agujjim Asan Branch runs from agujjim to seafood jjim, boneless agujjim, algonijjim (roe and milt stew) and agu jiri-tang (clear monkfish soup), so it's easy to pick what suits you. There are sizes from small to large too.
The add-ons for the seafood jjim were pretty generous as well: you can add monkfish, squid, octopus, fish roe, milt, odeungi (sea squirts) and more, picking the ingredients you like to make it even more filling. For meals there were steamed rice, fried rice, flying fish roe rice balls and a kids' pork cutlet, and there were also giant fried shrimp, udon noodles and ramen noodles that go nicely with the stew.
One catch: they say the seafood add-ons need to be put in with your first order so everything is timed and tastes right, so decide before you order. Two of us went, and we ordered a small seafood jjim and fried rice.

Side dishes and warm seaweed soup
Once you find a seat and order at Sinseong Agujjim Asan Branch, a neat set of side dishes is laid out. One sip of the warm miyeok-guk (seaweed soup) and you realize all over again that the side dishes here are really well made. Warming up with hearty sides before the spicy seafood jjim made me look forward to the main meal even more.
Small seafood jjim at level 1: OK if you can't handle spice?
Seafood jjim full of deep flavor!

The level 1 seafood jjim at Sinseong Agujjim has a sauce that isn't harsh yet keeps pulling you back for more. We ordered level 1 without a second thought. My husband isn't someone who eats spicy food like a champ, but he does enjoy a bit of heat, and being able to adjust the spice here to your own taste was really great.

Packed with seafood, not just bean sprouts
The seafood jjim at Sinseong Agujjim Asan Branch is piled with fresh seafood, including big chunks of octopus and squid. We've all had that disappointment of ordering seafood jjim and getting nothing but bean sprouts, right? But Sinseong Agujjim, the Asan Mojong-dong favorite, is different. The spread that fills the table looks amazing, with big octopus, squid and other fresh seafood piled on without holding back.

With abalone, blue crab, mussels, shrimp and lots of other kinds of seafood in the pot, it was an even more welcome lineup for a seafood lover like me.

We snipped the big pieces of seafood with scissors so they were easy to eat in one bite.

The deep flavor of the seafood itself comes out in the spicy sauce, so the seasoning doesn't just sit on the surface, and it's really delicious. Picking out the plump seafood and adding crunchy bean sprouts makes for a festival of textures. Dip it generously into the special sauce and the seafood's savory umami comes through even stronger.

Fried rice in the leftover seafood jjim sauce
The fried rice at Sinseong Agujjim is a closing dish stir-fried in the leftover seafood jjim sauce and sprinkled generously with seaweed flakes and sesame seeds. Leaving that wonderful sauce behind is a crime. Even if you're about to burst, this fried rice is a must-order, and the generous seaweed flakes and sesame seeds make it explosively nutty.

The stew sauce itself is delicious, so imagine how good rice fried in the leftovers is! Take a big spoonful and the spicy, nutty flavor fills your whole mouth.
Generous portions, friendly service and above all a fantastic sauce that everyone likes, with no divided opinions, are what keep my feet heading here. On a day you crave a spicy steamed dish, why not enjoy a hearty meal at Sinseong Agujjim too? ❤️
