Offal soup & chili-topped cutlet in Manchon, Daegu: Jeju Seobine

In short

Jeju Seobine Haejangguk, Manchon Direct Branch is a haejangguk (hangover soup) and gukbap restaurant on busy Gukchaebosang-ro in Manchon-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu. On a cool autumn day, two naejangtang (beef offal soup) lovers ordered the naejangtang and the Jeju jumbo pork cutlet. The naejangtang broth with minced garlic and the cutlet topped with spicy green chili were the standouts. For anyone who likes offal and seonji (congealed ox blood), the naejangtang at Jeju Seobine Haejangguk is a must-try.

Today's post: Jeju Seobine Haejangguk, Manchon Direct Branch (제주섭이네해장국 만촌직영점).

When the weather turns cool and you want a hearty meal, gukbap (rice soup) naturally comes to mind. I remembered Jeju Seobine Haejangguk, Manchon Direct Branch, said to be a great gukbap spot in Manchon, Daegu, so I went with Dochi.

Where is Jeju Seobine Haejangguk, Manchon Direct Branch, and where do you park?

It's on a big road, so it's easy to find. The sign is huge, so you go "Oh! That's it!" right away, which I loved.

Best of all, there's a dedicated parking lot in front, so it's convenient if you come by car. With that lot, it looks good for family meals or office lunches too. And it's open from 10 a.m. all the way to 10 p.m., so it's a great place whenever you show up.

Is the inside spacious?

The inside of Jeju Seobine Haejangguk, Manchon Direct Branch is quite large, with lots of tables set comfortably apart. It works for a solo meal or for a family or group.

Once we stepped inside, it was pretty big. There were lots of tables with room between them, so eating was really comfortable.

It's fine for eating alone, and also a good place for families or groups.

Menu and how to order

The menu is posted big on the wall, and you order from the tablet on the table. This time we ordered two dishes: naejangtang and the Jeju jumbo cutlet.

The menu is posted big on the wall. You order on the tablet on the table! There seemed to be a lot more variety than I expected. For the haejangguk, you can choose one with both beef and seonji, or just one of them.

  • Naejangtang (beef offal soup)
  • Jeju jumbo pork cutlet

We'd thought about both getting Jeju-style haejangguk, but the two of us are crazy about naejangtang... the moment we saw it, we had to order it!! And a cutlet on top, the perfect combo!

Side dishes and the self-service bar

After you order, the basic side dishes are set out, and the naejangtang comes with a dipping sauce for the offal. If you run short on sides, you can get more from the self-service bar.

Naejangtang and Jeju jumbo cutlet served at the same time

It's really fast. The cutlet and the naejangtang came out at the same time. The cutlet was seriously big, and the naejangtang arrived bubbling in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot), piping hot.

What does the Jeju jumbo cutlet taste like?

The Jeju jumbo cutlet at Jeju Seobine is a Western-style (gyeongyangsik) pork cutlet: a big, crispy fried cutlet drenched in sauce, served with a clear soup. The sauce isn't very sweet and the cutlet never went soggy, staying crispy to the end.

First, the Jeju jumbo cutlet! It was a Western-style cutlet, crispy fried and generously covered in sauce. It came with a clear soup too.

The size of the jumbo cutlet is really enormous. Honestly I wondered whether a hangover soup place like this would be okay to bring kids to, but with a cutlet on the menu like this, it seemed perfect for families too.

Cut it into nice bite-size pieces. It's crispy, so it cuts really easily. The meat isn't tough, it's tender.

I liked that the sauce wasn't too sweet. It's generously poured on, but it doesn't get soggy and the crunch stays alive.

Dochi, a total spice addict, topped it with ttaengcho (spicy green chili), and eaten that way the heat made the flavor even better.

How is the naejangtang with minced garlic added?

The naejangtang at Jeju Seobine Haejangguk, Manchon Direct Branch comes in a ttukbaegi packed with offal. I'd heard adding minced garlic brings the broth to life, so I put some in, and the broth became much richer. The offal was chewy and tender with no gamy smell.

Naejangtang bubbling in an earthenware pot

Naejangtang, which we love so, so much. Seriously, the bubbling ttukbaegi is absolutely packed with offal. I'd heard that adding minced garlic makes the broth come alive, so I added some, and the broth was insane...

You can taste the deep savory richness of a long-simmered stock, and the spicy kick hits hard, but it isn't just a harsh heat; it's the kind that keeps you reaching for another spoonful. The offal is really generous, and none of it was tough: chewy and tender at the same time. Kind of nutty the more you chew?

There was no gamy smell either, so it was so easy to eat. I polished off a bowl of rice with the hot broth. The cutlet and naejangtang combo turned out to be really good together.

Dessert and final thoughts

After the meal, Jeju Seobine Haejangguk, Manchon Direct Branch serves a yogurt to freshen your mouth. With gukbap and cutlet on the same menu, it's especially recommended for people who like seonji and offal.

After finishing, you can rinse your mouth with the yogurt that comes with the meal, and it was a perfect finish! On the way out, Dochi gave a thumbs up and kept raving that the naejangtang was so, so delicious.
