Aewol pork noodle shop: 4-dish spread, review-gift crunch, Handam

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch (한담국수 곽지애월점) is a pork noodle restaurant on Aewol-ro in Aewol-eup, Jeju. The writer ordered a spread of bone broth pork noodles, dongchimi bibim noodles (spicy noodles with radish water kimchi), lean pork gukbap (toryeom-style rice soup) and handmade pork tteokgalbi (2 pieces). Dessert was a Jeju crunch snack from the Naver receipt photo review event. Handam Guksu is a good pick for sharing several dishes around its bone broth pork noodles while looking out over the Aewol sea.

Korean restaurant in Jungmun, Jeju with parents: roses and rice tea

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a mackerel ssam-bap (grilled mackerel with rice in leafy wraps) Korean restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Seogwipo, Jeju, with up to 480 seats and a 3,500-pyeong garden of roses and seasonal flowers. On May 28 the writer and their parents ordered the aged-kimchi mackerel ssam-bap with abalone stone-pot rice for 3 and enjoyed 16 side dishes, abalone porridge and sungnyung (scorched-rice tea). Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap suits families who want flower-viewing and a hearty meal in one stop.

Jeju Dongmun Market souvenir shop: yellow cheese donut oranda pick

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is an oranda (sweet puffed-grain cluster) and gwajul (Korean rice cracker) souvenir shop inside Dongmun Market in Jeju. After trying samples, the writer bought a 4-flavor oranda box (gamtae seaweed, garlic, nut and yuzu) plus yellow cheese, carrot chocolate and hallabong donut oranda, and named the yellow cheese donut oranda the top pick. With its cute box packaging, Cheongchuni Oranda is a good place to pick up gift souvenirs in Jeju's Dongmun Market.

Jeju bakery near Iho Tewoo Beach: basalt rice bread to go, Bakery Onyu

Bakery Onyu Jeju Oedo Branch is a bakery at 80 Ujeong-ro in Jeju City, run by a master baker. The writer took away seven breads, including the Jeju Manong (garlic) baguette, Jeju basalt rice bread, Onyu handmade donut and Cheolyeong's homemade red bean bread, and liked the strawberry cream-filled donut and the rich cream cheese basalt rice bread best. Bakery Onyu is a good stop on a Jeju bread tour to pick up bread after visiting Iho Tewoo Beach.

Suseongmot tendon shop: steak, wasabi & chicken nanban, Ongijeong

Ongijeong Suseong Lake Branch is a Japanese tendon and rice bowl restaurant on Suseongmot 6-gil in Suseong-gu, Daegu. Our group ordered the steak tendon, the basic tendon and a side of chicken nanban: the steak was tender and clean-tasting, the tempura was crisp throughout, and soy-sauce rice topped with steak and wasabi was the best combination. With a spacious hall, room-style seating, baby chairs and parking in front, Ongijeong Suseong Lake Branch is a solid tendon spot at Suseongmot for gatherings with friends or family.

Gyeongju Bomun date café where a grapefruit hater loved the ade: Yard

Yard is a two-story café and brunch spot on the main road by Gyeongju World in Bomun, Gyeongju. On a Gyeongju trip we ordered the burnt cheesecake, signature cream latte and butterfly grapefruit ade, and a companion who dislikes grapefruit raved about Yard's grapefruit ade. With 2nd-floor beanbag seating, a large flower field and easy parking, Yard is a café worth recommending for a date in Bomun.

Gyeongju date restaurant: spicy pizza topped with cream sauce, Midam

Midam Kitchen is a hanok-style Western restaurant on Cheomseong-ro 49beon-gil, in the Hwangnidang-gil area of Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. On a Gyeongju date, the writer ordered the Kkokkio Pizza, Cream Chicken Rigatoni and a Coke Zero, and the standout was spooning the rigatoni's thick cream sauce over the mildly spicy Kkokkio Pizza. With its hanok exterior, garden and stylish interior, Midam Kitchen is an easy recommendation for a Western meal on a Hwangnidang-gil date.

Rib and shabu course in Gyeongju Bomun, Original 5-Item Set: Hyoeunok

Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch is a Korean beef rib hot pot restaurant in Bomun, Gyeongju, which says it sells its signature Bone-verest at only 30 a day. After booking on Naver, we walked in with no wait and ordered the Bone-verest Original 5-Item Set (for 2–4 people), eating it like a course: beef ribs, shabu, kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), then gondre (thistle) porridge. With big beef ribs and a broth that grows richer as it simmers, Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch delivered a satisfying meal right through to the final gondre porridge.

Sinmae, Daegu Korean lunch: grilled jeyuk & kimchi mandu, Cafe Dong-i

Cafe Dong-i Sicheol (카페동이 시지점) is a Korean restaurant in Sinmae-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu, where the writer ordered the 1-person brazier fire-grilled jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) set, a pork shoulder Japanese-style curry set, a tasting-size tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) and kimchi mandu (kimchi dumplings). The jeyuk was sweet, spicy and tender, the soup swapped for kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) was satisfying, and the crispy-outside, juicy-inside tangsuyuk and kimchi dumplings made for a generous meal. With a free service bar of fried eggs and multigrain rice plus 1 hour of free parking at the Sinmae Market public lot, Cafe Dong-i Sicheol is a solid lunch spot in Sinmae.

Generous portions, tender chicken and a rich yet clean broth make Golmok Naengmyeon 1966 Daegu a lunch spot in Deuran-gil worth recommending.

Gyeongju mochi shop: giant Dubai banana + 3 fruit mochi, Tareudang

Tareudang (타르당) is a takeout-only fresh fruit mochi dessert shop on Sajeong-ro in Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil area. On a Gyeongju trip, we took a giant Dubai banana, fresh whole mango mochi, fresh pineapple cream mochi and fresh gold kiwi mochi back to our accommodation, and each one had big pieces of fruit with cream and chewy mochi that worked well together. If you want a special dessert to carry around Hwangridan-gil, Tareudang's fresh fruit mochi are worth trying.
