Yangjae pie shop, takeout for a park picnic: Hodu Kkakki Brothers
In short
Hodu Kkakki Brothers (호두까기형제) is a takeout-only handmade walnut pie shop in front of Exits 3 and 4 of Yangjae Station in Gangnam, Seoul, selling organic pies sweetened with oligosaccharide syrup, honey and maple syrup instead of sugar. The writer took away a 9-piece assorted pie box and drinks to share with a friend at Maeheon Citizens' Forest, tasting everything from the barely sweet matcha cream pie to the sweeter kabocha and cream cheese pies. With assorted sets at around 35,000 won, Hodu Kkakki Brothers is a good fit for anyone looking for a gift for older relatives or a thank-you gift.

What is Hodu Kkakki Brothers?
Hodu Kkakki Brothers (호두까끼형제) is a handmade walnut pie shop right in front of Exits 3 and 4 of Yangjae Station. It uses no sugar, only oligosaccharide syrup, honey and maple syrup, so the pies are plain and gently sweet, a healthy walnut pie place! That makes it a great dessert spot for families with kids, or for thank-you gifts to older relatives.

There is no parking lot, but you can stop briefly in front for up to 5 minutes. I recommend ordering takeout by phone ahead of time and picking it up quickly!

How many pie flavors does Hodu Kkakki Brothers have?
There are 8 pies in total: Signature (walnut), Original (pecan), milk cream, matcha cream, cream cheese, hazelnut, macadamia and kabocha (sweet pumpkin). I wanted to eat with a friend in the park, so I ordered drinks and a premium walnut pie (whole).

- Signature (walnut)
- Original (pecan)
- Milk cream
- Matcha cream
- Cream cheese
- Hazelnut
- Macadamia
- Kabocha (sweet pumpkin)
They keep 7 days in the fridge and 30 days in the freezer. They taste even better cold, haha.

There is also a limited-quantity Dubai crispy pie. I'm a little sad I didn't grab one, hahaha.

What are the drinks like at Hodu Kkakki Brothers?
I loved that there's a wide variety of drinks too! I picked a milk tea and a peppermint tea. And unlike many drinks these days, the sizes are generous, which made me even happier T_T

How I picked the assorted pies
After some agonizing, I ordered 2 matcha, 1 kabocha, 2 original (pecan), 1 milk cream, 1 cream cheese and 1 macadamia cheese pie. I added a mini box for ₩1,000 so I could take the leftover pies home!

Yangjae walnut pies for a picnic at Maeheon Citizens' Forest
I ate the pies at Maeheon Citizens' Forest (매헌시민의숲), just down the road. I'd thought about going to the Han River, but the forest was so close that we headed there instead.

The pamphlet is full of care.. it describes the taste and ingredients of each pie in detail.

Hodu Kkakki Brothers assorted pie price and gift packaging
If you order the assorted pies at Hodu Kkakki Brothers, they come in really pretty packaging. Cakes are so expensive these days, so I think it's a big plus that a healthy set with a variety of flavors comes to around ₩35,000.

Guys.. the look of it is insane, right T_T It's so pretty that it's perfect as a gift!

The fillings are thick and generous too!
Are sugar-free pies really not sweet?
The matcha cream pie at Hodu Kkakki Brothers is barely sweet. They'll give you a fork if you ask, so I tried the matcha first, and it was bitter matcha cream with almost no sweetness. I'd only had ordinary sweet pies before, so eating an unsweet pie for the first time felt fascinating..!

The other pies also tasted healthy, with the natural flavor of the ingredients and no sugary sweetness. So if you usually like sweet desserts, I recommend the cream cheese pie and the kabocha pie!

Can you carry the pies around on a hot day?
I took the rest home and put them in the freezer, and it was 30 degrees (86°F) that day, right? Yet the cream stayed firm with no melting or dripping!

The kabocha pie had a lovely chewy texture and aroma.

And it's loaded with nutty pecans..! I can't believe Yangjae has such a great healthy dessert place. I think it will be a good pick to take along for gifts to elders or thank-you presents~!
Who should try Hodu Kkakki Brothers?

Hodu Kkakki Brothers is a handmade walnut pie dessert shop in front of Yangjae Station, making healthy pies with organic flour and domestic rice flour and no refined sugar. I highly recommend its walnut pies to anyone interested in organic desserts, or who prefers the natural flavor of ingredients over sweet desserts!
