Tempura bowl shop in Dongtan: thick squid ika tendon at Onsen Dongtan

Onsen Dongtan is a tendon (tempura rice bowl) restaurant next to Dongtan Central Park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered two ika tendon (squid tempura rice bowls) and karaage (Japanese fried chicken), and left full thanks to tender squid tempura as thick as a glue stick, nori and kabocha tempura, and free rice refills. With baby chairs and tables for two, Onsen Dongtan is a good stop for a family outing lunch or a solo meal in Dongtan.

Gangnam Station sashimi restaurant with lemon soju highballs: Damiseon

Damiseon Gangnam Station Branch is a Japanese-style fish restaurant in the basement of a building right outside Exit 5 of Gangnam Station, Seoul. The writer ordered the small basic live-fish set for two, which arrived in courses: clam soup, sea bream, halibut and seasonal sashimi, skidashi (small side dishes), grilled saury, shrimp tempura, flying fish roe maki and a fish-bone stew with roe. They also turned Chum Churum soju into highballs with tonic water and lemon. With generous skidashi and a feeling of being well looked after, Damiseon is a very satisfying choice for a Gangnam Station group dinner or first round.

Daechi-dong eel rice bowl before a COEX expo, crispy tare: Manmok

Manmok is a Japanese restaurant in Daechi-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, near Seolleung Station Exit 2, specializing in Kanto-style eel rice bowls made with Gochang freshwater eel. Before a COEX expo near Samseong Station, the writer and her husband had lunch at Manmok: a half-eel bowl and a whole-eel bowl with highballs. The tare (sweet soy glaze) was so crisp that it rasped under her chopsticks, making it the best eel restaurant she has tried. Manmok is pricey, but its eel rice bowl is worth trying at least once, enough that she regretted ordering only the half eel to eat light.

Ugly's cocktails are skillfully made but the bar food is basic, so have dinner first and come to Ugly for the cocktails.
