Gwangalli café around the drone show with rose-petal milk tea: Deokmi

Deokmi Atelier Gwang-an Branch is a European-style brunch and dessert café in Suyeong, Busan, about a 3–4 minute walk from Gwangalli Beach, and the third Deokmi location after Gijang Deokmi and Geumsong Deokmi. The writer ordered the October seasonal fig tiramisu, the signature crème brûlée French toast, and two signature drinks, the Rose Thé Noir and the Royal Vanilla Bean Latte, and especially loved the scent of the Rose Thé Noir, made with real dried rose petals. Deokmi Atelier is a good pick for brunch and dessert paired with a Gwangalli beach walk or the drone show.

Late-night bar in Jeonpo, Busan: warm jokbal, kudzu noodles at Ganbame

Ganbame (간밤에) is a bar in a Jeonpo-dong alley near Exit 8 of Jeonpo Station in Busanjin, Busan, with a wide menu of hotpot, jokbal (braised pig's trotters), yukhoe and mungtigi (raw beef), pasta and knife-cut noodles. The writer arrived around 11 PM for the half-and-half hotpot, found it sold out, and ordered Ganbame's limited daily jokbal and kudzu cold noodles instead. The chewy, tender warm jokbal paired with refreshing kudzu cold noodles beat expectations, the staff were friendly, and Ganbame is worth a look for anyone after a Jeonpo bar with plenty of menu choice and a good atmosphere.

Italian in Jeonpo, Busan: sous vide steak & white ragu pasta, Brassway

Brassway Seomyeon Jeonpo is a home-style Italian restaurant on a Jeonpo side street in Busan. The writer ordered Brassway's baby potato fries, a sous vide flat iron steak and white ragu pasta, and apart from a tough strip of sinew in the center of the steak, the gochujang ranch sauce, kabocha squash purée and cherry tomatoes each stood out. Verdict: all three Brassway dishes satisfied, and the writer is 100% planning a return.

Tteokmama Cheongju Gaesin Branch (떡마마 청주개신점) is a café-style rice cake (tteok) shop on Bok-daero in Seowon-gu, Cheongju. The writer tried chocolate injeolmi, pizza seolgi, honey baekseolgi, red bean sirutteok, a 3-piece fruit chapssaltteok (fruit mochi) set, salt yakgwa and yakbap, and the warm seolgi, the chocolate-filled injeolmi and the fresh-fruit chapssaltteok stood out most. Cheongju café: rye vs white chicken sandwich & salmon, Eopcheonri382

Eopcheonri382 Chungbuk National University Branch is a retro-style café near Chungbuk National University in Seowon-gu, Cheongju, serving meals such as sandwiches, toast and poke salads. On a return visit, the writer ordered ham and cheese toast, the chicken breast sandwich on both rye and regular white bread, and the salmon sandwich for the first time, and took everything to go with an extra cooler bag. Changwon Station eel restaurant with takeaway sikhye: Daedo Jangeo

Daedo Jangeo (대도장어) is an eel restaurant in Palyong-dong, near Changwon Station in Changwon, that has been grilling eel directly over coal briquettes for 32 years. At Daedo Jangeo the writer ordered seasoned grilled eel and eel soup: the eel carried a smoky briquette flavor with almost no fishy smell, and a sikhye (sweet rice drink) rounded off the meal. Daedo Jangeo is a solid pick for a meal with your parents, a family dinner out or a team dinner.

Cheongju pasta restaurant: cream, ragù, rosé and oil sauces at Tove

Tove Casual Restaurant Bokdae branch is a pasta and gnocchi restaurant near Jiwell City in Bokdae-dong, Cheongju. The writer ordered five dishes at once (truffle cream potato gnocchi, rich ragù rigatoni, red prawn rosé pasta, plump scallop oil pasta and an arugula jambon salad) to compare cream, ragù, rosé and oil sauces. The truffle cream potato gnocchi and the arugula jambon salad are must-orders at Tove Bokdae, and because it is popular, booking ahead is the better plan.

Changwon Station pork trotters: thin-sliced cold jokbal at Songgane

Songgane Wang Jokbal Bossam Changwon Station Branch is a jokbal (braised pig's trotters) and bossam chain restaurant near Changwon Station in Changwon, Gyeongnam, known for thinly sliced cold jokbal. A large jokbal and doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) came out as chilled jokbal with chewy skin and tender meat, while the stew was slightly bland and slow to arrive but tasted good once salted shrimp was added. If you want to try a cold-style jokbal instead of the usual warm kind, Songgane Wang Jokbal Bossam Changwon Station Branch is worth a visit.

Gangnae, Cheongju Chinese spot: sweet-salty ganjajang at Julseoneun

Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae (줄서는반점 강내본점) is a Chinese restaurant on Wolgok-gil in Gangnae-myeon, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, known for creative dishes like stir-fried cream jjamppong, scallion beef brisket jjamppong and kkansho fried rice. On this visit the order was ganjajang (black bean noodles with a dry, wok-fried sauce), brisket jjamppong, cream stir-fried jjamppong and lemon tangsuyuk; the sweet-and-salty ganjajang stood out most, and the cream jjamppong tasted much better with Cheongyang chili added on request. If you want great ganjajang in Gangnae, Cheongju, start with the ganjajang at Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae.

The writer ordered the sotbap set meal of freshly cooked, fluffy pot rice with mild side dishes, all refillable except the meat dishes, and found the view of a country school playground relaxing throughout the meal. Just 4 minutes from Café Tteun (카페 뜬), Jogane Sotbap is an easy meal stop to add to a Haman trip.

Masan Korean restaurant, extra bulgogi before last order: Yun Sikdang

Yun Sikdang (윤식당) is a Korean set-meal restaurant on Bukseong-ro in Masanhappo-gu, Changwon, that serves just one dish: the grilled bulgogi set (seokswae bulgogi jeongsik). The writer ordered the set for two and, with the kitchen about to close, added an extra grill plate the moment the food arrived. Every side dish, from the squid salad and doenjang stew to the crispy kimchi pancake, spicy marinated crab and steamed egg, tasted carefully homemade. If you want a set meal in Masan where the sides are as good as the main, Yun Sikdang is a satisfying choice.
