Seomyeon galbijjim lunch with separate spice paste: Sinchon Yangpuni
In short
Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch is a spicy galbijjim (braised short rib) restaurant in Seomyeon, Busan, where the signature Yangpuni Galbijjim costs 14,000 won per 250g serving. The writer ate at the annex (branch no. 2), ordering two level-2 Yangpuni Galbijjim with half an octopus added, and tried the separate spice paste that groups with different heat preferences can request, along with complimentary acorn jelly soup and corn salad. Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch is worth recommending both as a lunch spot and as a Korean pub in the evening.

Here is my honest review of Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch (신촌양푼이 서면본점), specifically its branch no. 2, the annex, a spicy galbijjim (braised short rib) restaurant in Seomyeon, Busan, famous by word of mouth for its addictive flavor. If you're looking for a Seomyeon lunch spot for a hearty, filling meal, or a Korean pub in Seomyeon where you can drink with great side dishes in the evening, I recommend it with confidence.
Is there parking at Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch?
Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch has no dedicated parking lot. Keep that in mind when you visit Seomyeon.
What are the exterior and the wait like?
The retro-style neon sign is flashy and eye-catching, so you can spot it from far away. Here's the storefront, with its nostalgic mood.

Warm wood and red brick interior touches blend stylishly, and the place gives off a real "this is a good restaurant" vibe from the entrance.

This is the on-site waiting notice posted at the entrance. It says the restaurant is always busy, but tables turn over quickly. Thanks to an efficient system that seats you at whichever of branch 1 or 2 has a table first, the wait that could be long gets cut down a lot. For the record, we went to the annex, branch no. 2.
There is also an outdoor waiting area set up with waiting guests in mind. Cushions sit on wooden benches so you can wait comfortably, and right next to it is a Tabling machine where you can register for the queue.

This is the main menu board standing outside. The signature Yangpuni Galbijjim is listed at a reasonable ₩14,000 per 250g serving. English, Chinese and Japanese are written on it too, so foreign tourists can easily understand the menu.
Inside the restaurant and the spice levels

As you'd expect from a popular place, the inside was packed with customers.

This is the spice level guide, kindly explained. There are four levels: level 1 "not spicy," level 2 "standard," level 3 "quite spicy" and level 4 "brace yourself." Familiar instant noodles like Shin Ramyun and Buldak stir-fried noodles are given as examples, so you can choose according to how much spice you can handle.
Different spice preferences in your group? Ask for a separate spice bowl

Sinchon Yangpuni has a notice for the "separate spice bowl" (따로맵장) service, made for people who love spicy food. If your group has different spice tastes, you can ask for it. Hot chili powder and chopped fresh chili are mixed with galbijjim broth on the spot so you can adjust your own spice level, a charming service. The staff makes it for you.

According to the notice, Sinchon Yangpuni's spicy galbijjim uses no gochujang (red chili paste). It has been made for 20 years with sea-salt soy sauce and salted shrimp aged 15 to 60 days, so it's said to sit easy on your stomach even the next day.
If Shin Ramyun is too spicy for you, just go with level 1. Because Shin Ramyun is level 1.5.
Menu and how to order

This is the full menu neatly posted on the wall. Besides the main Yangpuni Galbijjim, there are many side options: a crispy-outside, moist-inside seafood potato pancake, handmade pork cutlet, pour-over cheese and aged kimchi. You can also add various noodles and extras such as kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), ramen, glass noodles, rice cakes and bean sprouts to taste.

To order, just scan the QR code on the table.

We ordered two Yangpuni Galbijjim at level 2 and added half an octopus.
What free side dishes come out?

Here is the generous basic table setting of side dishes at Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch.

You get cool, clean acorn jelly soup (dotorimuk sabal), sweet and nutty corn salad, and salty pickled onions. There are also fresh perilla leaves, a perfect match for wrapping spicy galbijjim, and a special mayo sauce that softens the heat.
Level 2 galbijjim with half an octopus: how did it taste?

Here is the hearty look of Yangpuni Galbijjim, the signature dish of Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch.

The homey yangpuni (metal basin-style) pot is full of tender, soft ribs with no gamey smell.

Crunchy bean sprouts, fresh shredded scallions, chewy octopus and glass noodles are all simmered down in the sharp, deep sauce, and the savory umami is great.

Just imagine how good it is to wrap a piece of galbijjim in a perilla leaf, one by one.

This is a shot of the whole spread. With a clean, tidy table and warm interior lighting, it's a great place to eat as a Seomyeon lunch spot. Thanks to the cozy, homey atmosphere, it turns into a nice Korean pub in Seomyeon at night.
Verdict: a Seomyeon lunch spot and a Korean pub
If you're looking for a proper Korean restaurant in Seomyeon, Busan, I recommend Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch for its explosive umami. It suits you as a Seomyeon lunch spot when you want a filling meal, and it will also satisfy you as a Korean pub in Seomyeon when you want to enjoy a drink with spicy seasoned galbijjim in the evening.
