Cheongju lamb skewers and kimchi okmyeon noodles: Gukje Yangyukgwan
In short
Gukje Yangyukgwan is a lamb skewer restaurant on the Bokdae-dong restaurant street in Cheongju, Chungbuk. A couple ordered raw lamb skewers, original lamb skewers and a side of kimchi okmyeon (spicy kimchi noodle soup) for 42,000 won in total, and the raw skewers had no gamey smell at all while the kimchi okmyeon broth was fiery and clean. Gukje Yangyukgwan is worth trying even for people who usually avoid lamb.

The big sign outside really catches your eye haha 😎

The entrance already gives off great vibes 〰️ You can tell right away it's clean and spacious~

Inside Gukje Yangyukgwan and the self-serve side dish bar
Inside Gukje Yangyukgwan, 4-person tables are set at comfortable intervals. The space is quite large so we could eat comfortably ❣️ There were also quite a few groups having dinner parties 🫢 The interior was so clean that hygiene wasn't a worry at all!! No greasy residue anywhere, and everything was perfectly organized.

The basic side dishes are set up at a self-serve bar so you can refill freely 👍 The soy sauce dip is the real kicker — you have to try soy sauce combined with cheongyang chili.

What two people ordered and what it cost
Gukje Yangyukgwan doesn't just have lamb skewers — there's a variety of cooked dishes too, so you can order to your taste 🍀 My husband and I visited together and ordered as follows 🙌
- 📍 Raw lamb skewers, 1 serving: ₩16,000
- 📍 Original lamb skewers, 1 serving: ₩16,000
- 📍 Kimchi corn noodles: ₩10,000
- Total: ₩42,000

Raw lamb skewers: no gamey smell, springy texture
Gukje Yangyukgwan, the lamb skewer spot in Cheongju, apparently uses rib and shoulder cuts from lambs under a year old. That explains why the texture is different from other lamb skewer places — chewy yet tender 🫢

The lamb skewers already look different from the start 😎 The bright red color practically screams freshness.

The ratio of lean meat to fat was great! The flavor was clean and light without being greasy, and the texture was firm yet chewy ✨ Even though it's raw lamb skewer, there was no gamey smell at all, so I think even people who normally can't eat lamb could give this a try.

Original lamb skewers loaded with seasoning
The original lamb skewers come generously dusted with seasoning powder! It adds a nice savory kick, so I think plenty of people would love it! But for me and my husband, raw lamb skewers were the clear pick ✌️

Golden brown on the outside, juicy on the inside — the kind of texture that keeps coming back to mind ❣️

What does the kimchi okmyeon side taste like?
We also ordered kimchi corn noodles (김치옥면) as a side 📌 I agonized over the side menu at Gukje Yangyukgwan for a really long time, and figured something with a bit of spice would feel refreshing.

It's topped with stir-fried kimchi, which surprisingly pairs really well with the corn noodles 🍀 The corn noodles were springy, and the broth soaked into them nicely. The broth wasn't greasy at all and had just a hint of spiciness, so we could enjoy it without any heaviness ❣️

From the skewers to the side dish to the sauces, everything was delicious — I could tell this place really knows how to cook. Their skill is no joke, so I bet the other dishes are just as good; I really want to come back and try more haha.

The combination of lamb skewers and corn noodles was also amazing 👍 The noodles were soft, and the broth was clean and refreshing — you really have to try it!!

A place where you can taste fresh lamb with absolutely no gamey smell
