Today I'm introducing a Korean set-meal spot near Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan where you can get a really filling, tidy meal: Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch (카페동이 영남대아트센터점), inside the university's Cheonma Art Center.

It's a very well-known place, so I went with high expectations, and it was even better than I expected, so I'm sharing it with you all!
Where is Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch, and what are its hours?
It's on the 2nd floor of the grand hall of the Yeungnam University Cheonma Art Center, 280 Daehak-ro, Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. It's close to Exit 3 of Yeongnamdae Station and you can use the Cheonma Art Center parking lot, so it's very easy to get to!

Atmosphere and seating: rooms and even high chairs

The interior is bright and clean, so it works for a date and is also perfect for bringing your parents. The tables are nicely spaced, too.

There are rooms as well, so it would be a good place for a group meal from school.

Especially, there are sturdy high chairs at one side of the restaurant, so I thought families with kids could eat comfortably here. Great thoughtful touch!

Cafe Dongi's single-serving brazier meals: good value?
We ordered two kinds of Cafe Dongi's signature single-serving brazier meals plus a side. They come out neatly as individual trays, so they're lovely to eat. With today's prices, getting such a generous, filling meal for around ₩10,000 makes this a top pick for Yeungnam University students and office workers alike.

There's a reason Cafe Dongi is loved as a Daegu and Gyeongsan rice spot. They say the rice is cooked only with grade-1 Geumssal rice grown in Gimpo, a pristine DMZ area. No wonder the grains were glossy and unusually sticky.

Free self-bar: fried eggs, multigrain rice, barley gangjeong
When you order a meal, there's a self-bar where you can freely take fried eggs, multigrain rice and barley gangjeong (crunchy barley snack) at no charge! Frying yourself an egg before the main dish arrives is surprisingly fun. I also found out it was chosen as a Naver Best Ordering Business of the Year in 2020. Places many people visit really do have their reasons.

A robot serves the finished food :)
How does the fire-grilled jeyuk set taste?

The first dish out was Cafe Dongi's signature fire-grilled jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) set. It's a premium-style set with the fire-grilled jeyuk, a deeply flavorful traditional doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and a seasonal drink for dessert.
Maybe because it's stir-fried quickly at 300 degrees, the vegetables kept their crunch and the meat was full of locked-in juices. A subtle smoky fire flavor spreads the moment you take a bite, and it was spicy-sweet, a "can't go wrong" taste anyone would like.

Is the fire-grilled bulgogi set good for eating with kids?
The second dish was Cafe Dongi's fire-grilled bulgogi set: soy-marinated pork bulgogi + traditional doenjang jjigae + a dessert drink.

The bulgogi is also cooked over 300-degree direct fire, so the meat wasn't dry at all and the juiciness was amazing. The marinade is made by grinding domestic natural fruit and vegetables, and maybe that's why the sweet-salty flavor tasted natural, not artificial. I think it would be great for kids too.

Sides: mini tangsuyuk taster and Coke Zero
Just the meal sets felt like not enough, so we also ordered the mini tangsuyuk taster (sweet and sour fried pork) and a Coke Zero for a clean finish. Even though it's mini, the meat was thick and the batter chewy and crispy, a perfect match with the set meals. It's a light size, ideal as a side!

Is Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch worth returning to?
If you're looking for a rice restaurant near Yeungnam University or in Gyeongsan, I'd recommend it without hesitation. It's inside the Cheonma Art Center, so it's also perfectly convenient to drop by when you come for a performance. Taste, value, friendliness and a generous self-bar: Cafe Dongi has it all. I'll be back soon when I'm craving a hearty Korean meal! 👍
