Dujeong-dong sashimi restaurant lunch set with beondegi: Donghae Bada

In short

Donghae Bada Hoetjip is a seasonal sashimi restaurant in Dujeong-dong, Cheonan, that also serves seafood stew, seafood jjim and monkfish jjim. Arriving right at opening as the first guests of the day, a couple ordered the set menu available from two people, which pairs an assorted sashimi platter with seafood stew, and filled up on beondegi (silkworm pupae) and bossam banchan plus a stew holding a still-wriggling octopus, so the fried rice finish was skipped. Staff at Donghae Bada Hoetjip named every fish on the platter and trimmed the octopus stew at the table, and that service is what stayed with them.

Today's the day my husband and I go for a good lunch~ I'd been singing about wanting sashimi for days, and we're finally going to eat it 💕

What kind of place is Donghae Bada Hoetjip in Dujeong-dong?

This is Donghae Bada, a well-known raw fish restaurant in Dujeong-dong~ It's a seasonal sashimi specialist that also serves seafood stew, seafood jjim (braised seafood), and even monkfish jjim all in one place, so if you love seafood you just can't walk past it ^^ Ta-da~~ this is Dujeong's Donghae Bada~~

What Donghae Bada Hoetjip is like right at opening time

Thinking about sashimi, we showed up right at opening time!! And of course we were first in line ^^ Thanks to that we could take all the photos of the place we wanted~ There are plenty of tables and a separate group section, so it looks perfect for family gatherings or work dinners!!

What the set menu includes and the two-person minimum

You've got to eat well to enjoy the view, right!? Let's pick something quick!! I'm a seafood fiend, so... just looking at the menu makes my mouth water!! Seafood stew, seafood jjim, lobster, monkfish jjim — ugh... they're all my favorites so it was hard to choose, but we went with the set menu of assorted sashimi and seafood stew~ The set menu is only available from two people, and it's cheaper than at a typical sashimi restaurant compared, so it's a comfortable choice ^^

Besides the set menu, there's also à la carte like salmon sushi, flounder sushi and mulhoe, so it's good for a simple lunch too ^^

Beondegi served as a banchan

Banchan plates set out on the table

The banchan, right down to beondegi and bossam

The banchan (side dishes) arrived~ from soft bossam (boiled pork wraps), to jeon (savory pancakes) that make you think of rainy days, to the nostalgic beondegi (silkworm pupae)~ Beondegi is hard to find sold anywhere these days, so I missed it and was glad to see it haha~ Salty and moreish, bite after bite~ before you know it the bowl's empty!!! That's the charm of beondegi~~

What is on the assorted sashimi platter, from croaker to dab

While we were working through the banchan~ the star of the show, the assorted sashimi, arrived!! It was so fresh it almost looked luminous~~!! Just looking at it, you can tell how fresh it is 👍🏻 I already know how it tastes but my mouth was watering anyway

Croaker and tuna sashimi on the platter
Dab and salmon sashimi on the platter

Croaker / tuna, flounder / tuna, dab / salmon. I like sashimi but... I usually only know salmon and flounder... I never really eat it knowing what it is, but the staff kindly told us the name of each type one by one~

Knowing the name of each piece as I ate made it taste even better~ I already knew the other kinds fairly well, but oh... the chewy texture of the dab was really something special

Eating only tuna gets a bit rich, so we wrapped it in gim (dried seaweed) — and they gave us three sheets!! Oh, we could wrap it up generously, good good good!!!

A piece of tuna sashimi picked up with chopsticks
A soft piece of tuna sashimi

Wow... such a soft texture on the tuna!! It's different by cut and by type of fish, each with its own charm, which is really the fun of eating sashimi ^^

The seafood stew with a live octopus inside

While we were eating the sashimi, the seafood stew came out... and wow...!! I thought sashimi was the main event, but the seafood stew might actually be the real star. Can you see how much seafood is in there!? I was shocked at how generous it was~

A generous pot of seafood stew topped with octopus

First I was surprised by the size of the sturdy octopus~ and then surprised again by how fresh it was, wriggling around~ Oh... I'm so looking forward to this seafood stew!

Staff trim the octopus and stew at your table

While the stew was cooking... I was wondering how on earth we'd deal with that octopus~ and then, our savior appeared~ Once the stew was cooked through, the staff came over and trimmed it into easy bite-size pieces for us~ All we had to do was eat!!

Seafood stew complete!! Now we just eat it~ I'm sensitive to spice so I was worried it might be too hot! But no need to worry!!! It wasn't spicy, just deeply savory and warming~~ I honestly kept eating it without even realizing~

Finished, warming seafood stew after trimming

Why the couple skipped the fried rice finish

We'd planned to finish with fried rice too... but the portions were so generous that we were too full, and had to skip it, sadly ㅜㅜ Everyone else should definitely try the fried rice~ From the incredibly fresh sashimi to the warming, generous seafood stew, we really came home stuffed to bursting
