Sinnonhyeon jazz bar first date: endive grapefruit starter, Flat Nine

In short

Flat Nine is a jazz dining bar on the 5th floor of a building on Gangnam-daero 65-gil, between Sinnonhyeon Station and Gangnam Station in Seoul, where you eat a course dinner while watching live jazz. The writer ordered the early-evening Classic Course: an aperitif, endive and Korean melon (chamoe) starters, vongole pasta, black pork tenderloin steak and dessert, all while watching the jazz band from right in front of the stage. With good value for a course meal and an immersive show, Flat Nine is a strong pick for an early-stage date or a blind date.

What kind of date spot is Flat Nine in Sinnonhyeon?

Flat Nine is a space on Gangnam-daero 65-gil in Sinnonhyeon where you can have dinner while enjoying a live jazz show. I absolutely love unusual dates and new experiences, so the moment I heard about Flat Nine, I was dying to go.

The mood is so good and the performance is art, yet the price is very reasonable, so I fell for it as a total bargain fairy. Once I actually visited, the course meal was seriously great value, and the stage is super close to the dining area, so the show is immersive and the atmosphere is the best. It was great for a Sinnonhyeon date, and I feel like visiting Flat Nine with someone you're just getting to know would send the affection level soaring ❤️

What are Flat Nine's live charge and ordering rules?

Watching a show at Flat Nine comes with a live charge of ₩15,000 per person, and you don't have to order a meal. You can just order drinks and enjoy the show, so it feels even less of a burden. The drink lineup was varied too, from wine to highballs and cocktails.

There are both single dishes and courses for meals, and the courses are great value! We chose the dinner Classic Course. It comes out the proper way, from aperitif to dessert.

What's in the Flat Nine dinner Classic Course?

Aperitif

The first thing out in the Classic Course was the aperitif. It looked so pretty and was so refreshing. Zesty and a real palate cleanser!

The course price is really reasonable and the lineup was great. It's not just a starter-main-dessert combo; you get an aperitif and bread too, which is the best 🥹

Bread and the endive grapefruit starter

The bread was wonderfully fluffy and delicious, and I liked that the starter came generously, two pieces per person. It's endive topped with grapefruit, onion, cream cheese and more, and the ingredients added to the texture and taste of the endive made it very fresh and good.

We came early, so the jazz show hadn't started yet, but the food was already so tasty that I had a strong feeling today's Sinnonhyeon date was going to be a success.

The next starter was a combination of salmon and white fish, served on top of Korean melon (chamoe). Sweet, crunchy melon with diced aged raw fish that was soft and chewy, and you could taste the natural flavor of the fish. So tasty.

Above all, the plating was classy and pretty, a truly great place for a date!

Vongole pasta, the main of the Flat Nine Classic Course
Vongole pasta with zucchini, tomato and large clams

Main: vongole pasta

The main we picked was vongole pasta (clam pasta): zucchini, tomato, clams and pasta noodles. They seemed to use different kinds of clams, and I guessed some were a type of hard clam. The clams were big and really clean.

The broth from the clams and the seasoning of the pasta were spot on, the flavors were harmonious overall, and the portion was generous.

Main: black pork tenderloin steak

The plating of the black pork tenderloin steak was very impressive ❤️ Two sauces, fried scallion strips, the black pork tenderloin steak, and king oyster mushrooms that were grilled really well.

It was cooked just right and the meat was incredibly tender. It was a thick cut of pork, yet so soft that I was surprised and satisfied.

Cross-section of tenderly cooked black pork tenderloin steak

The more I ate, the more I felt the portion was much bigger than I expected, but eating it piece by piece while watching the show was great. The meat was really tender, and eating it with the mango purée and the steak sauce was the best combo. It had been so long since I enjoyed a black pork tenderloin steak this much, totally satisfied 🥹

How close do you get to the jazz show at Flat Nine?

The jazz at Flat Nine feels like watching live right in front of the stage. Before the performance properly starts, the staff explain the house rules and introduce jazz culture. After that, it's jam-packed jazz time!

Watching the musicians play right in front of us was so exciting, and the sound was amazing.

Chocolate and cream dessert that ends the Flat Nine course

When does the Classic Course dessert come out?

The last dessert of the Flat Nine course comes whenever you want, just call a staff member. The chocolate was really rich and fudgy and the cream really dense; it's not just plain chocolate and plain cream.

The flavor was so complete and the dessert was sooo good!!! A jazz show unfolding right before your eyes along with the food: Sinnonhyeon date, big success ❤️

Evening atmosphere at Flat Nine with a jazz show

Flat Nine was a place where I got totally recharged with tasty food in a lovely atmosphere. Since you can enjoy a course meal with a jazz show, I recommend it for a Sinnonhyeon date, and for blind dates or when you're seeing someone you're just getting to know!
