Clam hot pot or haesintang — what we ordered

Taegine Jogae Jeongol sells not just clam hot pot but also haesintang (seafood tonic soup), so it's good for getting a stamina boost in summer too. With the hot weather dragging on, I went back and forth between haesintang and clam hot pot, but since I remembered clam hot pot being really delicious before, I ordered clam hot pot for two.

Side dishes and the barley rice self-bar

The basic side dishes were kimchi, salad, and pickled radish. Taegine Jogae Jeongol serves barley rice alongside, which is such a nice touch.

Barley rice makes the noodles even more filling too, right? There's plenty of yeolmu (young radish greens) already in it, and if you want more, you can grab extra from the self-bar.

The generous clam hot pot came out and needed 15 minutes to cook, so they set a timer before leaving. My 18-month-old, Podo, is still on a low-sodium diet so I brought separate baby rice for her, but there were plenty of side menu options like kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), fried shrimp, and fried squid, so it seemed like a good setup — adults eat the clam hot pot while the kids have noodles or a side dish.

Clam hot pot for two at 47,000 won: how much food, and how does it taste?

Clam hot pot for two, ₩47,000. I was surprised by the pot size the moment it arrived — it was packed full of clams, so much that I wondered if we could really finish it all!

Clam hot pot needs about 15 minutes to simmer, and once that time is up, the owner personally comes over to cut the king scallop and squid for you. Having everything already trimmed made it so much easier to eat.

With king scallop, bay scallop, and various other clams and seafood going in, and all that broth pulled from the clams as it simmered, the soup was genuinely refreshing. Anyone who loves seafood will really love this clam hot pot.

There were fish cake skewers in there too, so I ate those before the clams, and they were so good ㅜㅜ J and I tried the broth once and immediately ordered a beer. That's how refreshing the broth was.

Squid, bay scallop, whelk, shrimp, abalone — look how generous it is even for a portion for two. On top of that, there's even cheese fondue in there.

Just dipping the clams straight into the cheese fondue makes them insanely rich and savory. It was so good that I scraped up every last bit of cheese at the end.

Both the abalone and shrimp came two pieces each, since it was the portion for two.

True to being a clam hot pot, there was even whelk in it, so we got to eat a wide variety of seafood! There were vegetables mixed in too, which I think made the broth even more refreshing. I bet this tastes even better after a walk around the art park or playing in the valley — the hot broth would really hit the spot.

Finishing the broth with kalguksu (knife-cut noodles)

It would be a shame to just stop after finishing the clam hot pot. With broth this rich, adding kalguksu noodles is a must. They boil the broth, drop in the noodles, and it's done!

After eating your fill of clams and seafood first, then finishing with noodles in that broth, you end up genuinely full and satisfied. If you order the clam hot pot, make sure — make sure — you add the kalguksu noodles.
