Jeju rice cake shop where one sample led to 2 shipped orders: Suragan

Whenever you come back from Jeju, your hands are loaded with gift sets... and one that's always in there is omegi-tteok (glutinous rice cake)!!! I'm a total rice cake fanatic who's tried every famous rice cake in the country, but since I was in Jeju, omegi-tteok was obviously mandatory. I heard there was a famous Jeju omegi-tteok shop near the airport known for making them well without additives, so on my last day in Jeju, I made a reservation and went to pick some up on my way home.

Where is Suragan Tteokbang, and what does omegi-tteok cost?

Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방) is a rice cake shop at 41 Noyeon-ro, Jeju-si, Jeju-do, close to Jeju Airport. Omegi-tteok is ₩1,000 per piece, with gift packs at ₩6,000 for 5, ₩11,000 for 10, ₩22,000 for 20, ₩30,000 for 30, and ₩50,000 for 50.

Parking and what the Suragan Tteokbang shop is like

Suragan Tteokbang is near the airport, on the same Pork80 line where I ate deliciously on my first day. Parking is available in front of the store, and there were plenty of spots around noon on a weekday.

Walking into the shop, aside from the small pickup area, the rest inside is all a rice cake-making workspace — they were busy making rice cakes.

Garaetteok (plain rice cake sticks) my child loved

There was rice cake in small packages up front — my kid loves garaetteok (cylindrical rice cake), so I bought one, and it stretched like cheese. You'd think plain garaetteok wouldn't have much flavor, but it had no strong taste and was just chewy like cheese, which was plenty delicious on its own.

Came for 20 pieces, paid for shipped gifts twice

The omegi-tteok shipping prices!!! I picked up my 20-piece pack to eat at home, tried one as a taste-test on my way out, said thank you, and left the store. But!!! But!!! I jumped back out of the car... The rice cake was so delicious I felt a duty to spread the word. I shipped 30 pieces to a relative I'm grateful to.

You can choose flavors — I first picked 10 each of red bean, soybean powder, and black sesame. After placing the shipping order, I got back in the car to try another taste-test piece... and jumped back out again lol. This time I sent a shipped gift to a friend who loves rice cakes...

What kind of flavor is this, you ask... It tastes like mochi, so chewy and sweet that I just kept eating it. And among the flavors, tangerine was the best by far. I chose the flavors again for the gift shipment to my relative too — for my friend and my relative I sent black sesame/soybean powder/tangerine. Bottom line: I went to pick up my order and ended up shipping gifts to acquaintances too lol. Seriously delicious.

I've tried plenty of market samples too, but this place is on a whole different level.

Unboxing at home and freezing the omegi-tteok

Opened up the omegi-tteok right when I got home!! Neatly lined up by flavor. So nice... Having the freezer full of rice cake feels reassuring somehow. Exciting omegi-tteok unboxing ^^

There are storage instructions too — definitely keep frozen!!! And they recommend taking it out to room temp then microwaving for 30 seconds.

The individual packaging is also nicely done.

Looks chewy just from the photo, right? Even my teenage daughter, who doesn't usually like rice cake, liked it.

Soft, chewy-textured omegi-tteok — it was so delicious and chewy that I ate 2 more as dessert after dinner. Nothing left to do but gain weight from here, but with the freezer stocked, it's a good night. Highly recommend Suragan Tteokbang, a Jeju omegi-tteok favorite.

Is Suragan Tteokbang worth it? Final verdict

I went to pick up an omegi-tteok gift pack, tasted one, and it was so good I ended up ordering more as shipped gifts. I've tried market samples at several places too, but to my taste, Suragan Tteokbang was clearly chewier and tastier. Tangerine was my favorite among the flavors, and the black sesame and soybean powder were nutty and good for putting together as gifts.

Since it's individually packaged, it's easy to keep in the freezer and eat one at a time, and the gift packaging is clean and upscale, so it could work well for anyone looking for a Jeju souvenir.
