Today I went to the place I think of whenever I want a hearty lunch in Dongnae: Yukmildo Dongnae Direct Branch (육밀도 동래직영점). Yukmildo is a well-known Dongnae BBQ restaurant famous for its 264-hour aged meat, and this time I tried the lunch special, the ssambap set (rice and stew served with leaf wraps).
I figured a BBQ restaurant's lunch menu would be simple, but the table was packed with everything from pot rice to stew, spicy stir-fried pork, steamed egg and ssam vegetables, and I was really happy with it. Considering prices these days, I was honestly amazed to get this much for ₩15,000 per person.

It's already famous as a BBQ place in Dongnae, and I'd heard the lunch special is great too, which is why I visited.

The building looks clean and upscale from the outside, and since parking is available, it's easy for people coming by car too.
Yukmildo's atmosphere and seating
Thanks to the wood-tone interior and spacious layout, the inside of Yukmildo feels more like an upscale Korean restaurant than an ordinary BBQ joint. Tables are widely spaced and have partitions, so it looked good for family meals, company dinners and gatherings.
The inside has a slightly different vibe from a typical BBQ restaurant.

The wood-tone interior and big space give it a fine-dining Korean feel. With wide gaps between tables and partitions, it seemed great for family outings, company dinners and gatherings.

Even at lunchtime, customers kept coming in, which made me think, yep, this is a proper Dongnae favorite.

On one side, pot rice was being made nonstop. Seeing the steam rising made me even more excited.
Yukmildo lunch special ssambap set: price and what's included
The Yukmildo Dongnae Direct Branch lunch special ssambap set is ₩15,000 per person, and you can choose either kimchi stew or cheonggukjang (strong fermented soybean stew) as your stew. It comes with spicy stir-fried pork, pot rice, stew, steamed egg, assorted banchan and ssam vegetables.

That day we ordered one ssambap set (kimchi stew) at ₩15,000 and one ssambap set (cheonggukjang) at ₩15,000.

The lunch special includes spicy stir-fried pork, pot rice, stew, steamed egg, assorted banchan and ssam vegetables. Considering what a lunch costs these days, I thought it was a really good-value spread.
The ssambap set in real life: how was it?
The ssambap set was so generous it surprised me the moment it arrived. It was way more than I expected.

The banchan were neatly plated and the whole set was really solid. The ssam vegetables were in great condition. Besides lettuce and perilla leaves, there were various other greens, so it was fun to pick and choose.

The vegetables were fresh, so wrapping them around the meat tasted even better. The steamed egg was so good it made me want to order more. It was moist and soft with just the right seasoning, so it would be good for kids too.

Spicy stir-fried pork (jeyuk-bokkeum): the main dish with a light fire flavor
Jeyuk-bokkeum is the main dish of Yukmildo's lunch special. The seasoning wasn't overdone and had a subtle smoky, flame-grilled flavor. The pork was tender rather than tough, and eaten with onion it had a great savory depth.
When I picked up a piece, I could feel how juicy it was. It didn't feel like a half-hearted lunch item at all; as you'd expect from a meat specialist, the quality of the pork was really good.

Pot rice (sotbap): my favorite
My favorite item in the Yukmildo ssambap set was the pot rice. It's cooked to order, so it was glossy and every grain was distinct.

It was nutty and delicious even on its own, so I kept going back for more.
Cheonggukjang: not smelly, easy to enjoy
I liked that Yukmildo's cheonggukjang wasn't as pungent as I expected. It was an easy, comfortable version.

Cheonggukjang often divides people because of its distinctive strong smell, but Yukmildo's wasn't overpowering. It was the kind you can enjoy as comfortably as doenjang stew (soybean paste stew).

It keeps the rich, earthy flavor without being heavy, so I think even people who don't usually eat cheonggukjang could enjoy it. It had plenty of tofu and vegetables, and the broth was clean-tasting, so it went really well with the pot rice. Even first-timers could enjoy this earthy stew. 😊
Kimchi stew: spicy, with plenty of ingredients
Yukmildo's kimchi stew was spicy and deeply flavored. It had big pieces of tofu and plenty of ingredients, so I was satisfied. The stew alone could make you finish a bowl of rice in no time.
The cheonggukjang had a lovely earthy aroma too, with a different charm from the kimchi stew.

A bite of pork ssam
I put spicy pork, garlic and a chili pepper on a fresh leaf and took a bite, and it was so good. The savory pork and the freshness of the vegetables went together really well.

Yukmildo's lunch special: is it good value?
Yukmildo Dongnae Direct Branch is famous as a BBQ restaurant, but the lunch special was really satisfying too.

The combination of pot rice and spicy pork was especially great, and with kimchi stew and cheonggukjang on top, it was more than enough for a meal. Above all, for ₩15,000 per person, I can confidently call this a good-value spot in Dongnae.
