Summer stamina beef BBQ in Songnidan-gil, Seoul: Sutbul Seonghwa

In short

Sutbul Seonghwa (숯불성화) is an aged beef and whisky charcoal grill in Songnidan-gil, near Exit 1 of Seokchon Station in Songpa, Seoul. On a weekend date, the writer and her husband ordered the 400g Seonghwa platter (snowflake beef, cubed flower rib and wine-marinated rib fingers), Hanwoo doenjang jjigae and Myeongpum Joseon Hyangmi rice; the Chungju oak charcoal and staff grilling the first round made the meal easy. For an atmospheric Songnidan-gil beef date, Sutbul Seonghwa is well worth considering.

It's Sutbul Seonghwa (숯불성화), a premium charcoal grill where you can enjoy aged beef alongside whisky. If you're looking for a date restaurant or an anniversary spot in Songnidan-gil, it's worth a look.

Inside Sutbul Seonghwa

Inside Sutbul Seonghwa: is it good for a date?

The interior has soft lighting and dark-toned décor, so it feels much more refined than an ordinary BBQ place. Sutbul Seonghwa is also known for its Suntory highballs, and the inside looked stylish too.

True to its concept as an aged beef and whisky specialist, it gave a far more polished impression than a typical grill house. The space is roomy and comfortable, and the tables are spaced generously so you can talk easily. With group seating and private rooms too, it looked great for family gatherings or company dinners.

There are coat hangers dotted around, which was handy. The soft lighting and dark interior together made it feel right for a Songnidan-gil date.

You order by table order right from your seat. One of the kicks of Sutbul Seonghwa, I think, is the free 'Excellent ice cream'. I made up my mind, haha, to grab it after the meal.

Chungju charcoal and the side dishes

The charcoal arrived first at Sutbul Seonghwa. They say they use charcoal made from Chungju oak, and the condition of the coals was really good. The fire came up evenly, so a gentle charcoal aroma seemed sure to seep naturally into the meat as it grilled.

Right after the charcoal, the side dishes came out: fragrant minari (water dropwort), icy radish salad, a mustard salad, white kimchi, pickled celery, myeongi namul (wild garlic-leaf greens) and mushrooms, all neatly set in their bowls.

Every side dish tasted as high quality as at an upscale hanjeongsik (Korean set-course) restaurant. I especially loved the icy radish salad, lightly frozen before serving so it's cool and crunchy. It was just right for my taste!

How is the 400g Seonghwa platter with snowflake beef and cubed flower rib?

Our 400g Seonghwa platter arrived. In order, it's cubed flower rib, snowflake beef and wine-marinated rib fingers. The marbling was so vivid that I was already excited. We started by grilling the snowflake beef and cubed flower rib.

A staff member grilled the first round for us, which made the meal so easy. Great service :) Not only did they grill it, they cut it with scissors into bite-size pieces and put each portion on our small plates.

I tried a bite right away and it melted in my mouth. The outside was crisp and the inside stayed moist and juicy, so I could fully taste the rich, nutty flavor that's unique to rib. We ate happily, thinking it was the best beef we'd had in a while.

Depending on your taste, add the salt, sesame salt, wasabi and so on set on your small plate! We also shared the nicely grilled mushrooms, one each, and the aroma was wonderful, maybe thanks to the good charcoal.

The key with wine-marinated rib fingers is not letting them burn

Last, we grilled the remaining wine-marinated rib fingers. With a faint wine aroma and sweet marinade soaked into the meat, they can burn quickly because of the sauce, so the key is to grill them without letting them char.

Slightly salty yet full of savory depth, they'd make great drinking snacks with wine, whisky or a highball.

The Hanwoo doenjang jjigae (₩8,000) and Myeongpum Joseon Hyangmi rice (₩2,000) we ordered to finish the meal were satisfying too. Good meat deserves good rice, and good rice deserves a good stew, I thought. The earthy doenjang with the deep savoriness of Hanwoo made for a hearty finish.

Sutbul Seonghwa review: final thoughts

If you're looking for a stylish beef restaurant in Songnidan-gil, I recommend Sutbul Seonghwa! Top-grade aged beef meets charcoal so you can really enjoy the meat's natural flavor, and with drinks like whisky and wine available, it would suit a special occasion too.

In particular, staff grilled the first round so we could eat comfortably, and with free parking and private rooms, it's worth considering if you're after a spot for a date, a family meal or a company dinner!

For two people, I recommend the combo of the Seonghwa platter, doenjang jjigae and a bowl of rice!
