Sugyeokok Bundang Migeum (수계옥 분당미금본점) is a dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) restaurant in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, a 7-minute walk from Migeum Station Exit 4. On a cool autumn day, two diners shared the 2-person set of chicken neck scorched rice porridge, dak hanmari and kalguksu noodles, and the clean, scallion-packed broth and large chicken made the meal feel like a portion for three. Sugyeokok Bundang Migeum is a filling, easy choice for anyone of any age when you crave hot broth.

Seosan conveyor sushi at early dinner, no wait: squid at Mikado Sushi

Mikado Sushi Chungnam Seosan Branch is a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant on Seongnim 6-ro in Seosan, Chungnam, where every plate costs a flat 2,100 won. On an early-evening visit with no wait, the writer took a bar seat and picked salmon, mitre squid (hanchi), ankimo with gamtae seaweed, engawa (flounder fin), swordfish belly, raw shrimp and aged kimchi raw fish sushi off the rail, stacking up plates. With wasabi left out by default and bar seating that suits solo diners, Mikado Sushi Chungnam Seosan Branch is the most satisfying, best-value sushi spot the writer has tried in Seosan.

Sunae esthetic salon: 90-min trapezius care and psoas check at Terra

Terra is a one-director, appointment-only esthetic salon on the 1st floor of the Daemyeong Zest shopping building near Sunae Station in Bundang, Seongnam, Gyeonggi. The writer booked Terra's 90-minute dry care course (120,000 won) for a forward-head posture and knotted trapezius muscles. The director pointed out and tested a weak left psoas muscle that the writer never even wrote on the intake chart. For 1:1 customized care, Terra's price is reasonable, and the writer would go back without hesitation.

Byeongjeom gopdoritang restaurant Mandori: whole chicken, beef tripe

Mandori Dongtan Jikyeongjeom is a dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew) and jjimdak restaurant on Yeoul-ro in Byeongjeom, Hwaseong. On a late weekend lunch, a self-confessed spice lightweight ordered the whole-chicken Korean beef gopdoritang (44,000 won... ) — the whole-chicken Korean beef gopdoritang at 48,000 won plus two bowls of rice — and the Uiseong garlic house sauce, size-11 Harim chicken and generous Korean beef daechang (beef intestine) emptied the rice bowl completely. The sauce is spicy but full of savory depth, making Mandori Dongtan Jikyeongjeom a certain return visit.

Gwanggyo Lake Park dessert café gift for parents: Haenggung Daol

Haenggung Daol is a handmade Korean dessert café on the first floor of Forena Gwanggyo, near Gwanggyo Lake Park in Suwon, Gyeonggi. The writer picked up the Daol No.3 (A) set of 10 desserts, wrapped in a bojagi cloth with a shopping bag, and shared it with her parents, where the pecan jeonggwa (candied pecans) and doraji jeonggwa (candied bellflower root) were the favorites. The desserts at Haenggung Daol are not overly sweet and the packaging looks upscale, making the set a safe choice for a return gift or a holiday present.

Seohyeon diet restaurant with kiosk solo dining: Prefers Diet Food

Prefers Diet Food Bundang Seohyeon is a diet-meal restaurant a one-minute walk from Gate 6 of AK Plaza at Seohyeon Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. The writer ate the pork myeongi-namul (wild garlic) bowl in the store and took a beef wasabi bowl home, finding the pork tenderloin as moist as if it had been sous-vide and the beef flap steak tender rather than chewy. With kiosk ordering and plenty of tables, Prefers Diet Food Bundang Seohyeon is an easy place to eat alone.

Mild kimchi jjim and Hwaseong Pay at Yangpuni, a Dongtan restaurant

Yangpuni Kimchi Jjigae & Samgyeopsal is a kimchi jjigae and kimchi jjim (braised kimchi) restaurant using domestic kimchi, in the Gaenari Park food alley of Bansong-dong, Dongtan, Hwaseong. On an early-evening visit the samgyeopsal kimchi jjim set for two cost 28,000 won and came with rice and an extra-large egg roll, and the kimchi jjim was mild enough for a spice-shy eater to finish comfortably. Yangpuni takes Gyeonggi local currency (Hwaseong Pay), has parking in front of the building and serves generous portions, so it works for team dinners too.

Sinheung Market Italian restaurant, bar-seat solo lunch: Villa de Blue

Villa de Blue Haebangchon is an Italian-style restaurant at the entrance of Sinheung Market on Sinheung-ro in Yongsan, Seoul. Taking a weekday off, I booked a bar-table seat and ate alone: polpo mambo (octopus, 25,000 won) and gnocchi fritti (9,000 won), finishing every bite of the octopus, baby potatoes and the smoky peas served alongside. If you want an Italian date-night restaurant in Haebangchon, Villa de Blue Haebangchon is the first place I'd recommend.

Dongtan tonkatsu at 2pm: top loin vs loin cutlet, ₩2,000 apart — Kkot

Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Main Branch is a Japanese-style pork cutlet (tonkatsu) restaurant in Mokdong, Dongtan, Hwaseong. Arriving at 2pm to avoid the wait, the writer ordered the loin cutlet and the limited-availability top loin cutlet together: the loin cutlet was lean and clean-tasting, while the marbled fat in the top loin cutlet made it much softer and richer. Since the two are only ₩2,000 apart, Kkot Gatsu's top loin cutlet is the one to order.
