The restaurant has an antique yet upscale interior, with generously wide spaces between tables. You can tell care went into every wall decoration and light, so it felt like being invited into a rich family's living room, haha. Even the floor tile patterns are pretty, so it's great for taking photos. We went a bit early, but word had clearly already spread, because there were quite a few guests.

You order on the tablet at your table, which is easy! The menu has photos for everything, so choosing was much simpler. We wanted to taste both the signature fresh galbi and the marinated galbi, so we went half and half!

We loaded up on a half plate of fresh galbi (₩29,000) and the marinated galbi, and we had already picked out our meal dishes too, haha.

On a wall poster, the sauce with plenty of Uiseong garlic and the seafood-packed gaesaebi-tang (crab and seafood hot pot) looked incredibly tasty too! It looked so good that I vowed to come back for drinks next time and definitely try that gaesaebi-tang.

Fresh and marinated galbi quality, plus the free steamed dish

The fresh galbi at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno had a vivid bright-red color, and the marinated galbi gleamed with a glossy shine. The moment you see it, a "wow, amazing" slips out. They said they trim the meat in-house, and you could really feel how fresh the raw beef was.

While we waited for the meat to cook, whoa, a steamed cypress-pot dish (pyeongbaek-jjim) came out as a freebie! They said it goes to every guest, and I was surprised at how good the quality was. With mild meat, crunchy bean sprouts and even shrimp, it was a perfect palate cleanser, haha.

Yes, at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch the staff grill the meat over charcoal for you. Now we finally put the fresh galbi on the charcoal first! The heat is strong so it cooks quickly, and the savory smell hits your nose.

The biggest plus here is simply that it's a restaurant that grills for you! With an expert's touch, they grill it to just the right doneness without burning it. We only had to chat comfortably and enjoy eating, so there's no better place for a get-together.

Once the meat is done, the staff slide it off to the side so it won't burn! For the first bite I dipped it in just a little salt to taste the meat itself. The juices burst in your mouth, and the savory flavor as you chew is truly outstanding. T_T

Marinated galbi flavor and the rib-deboning service

The marinated galbi at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno isn't aggressively sweet or salty, with a subtle savoriness that keeps you reaching for more. I think kids would love it, and it's an honest flavor that would earn compliments even if you bring older relatives. As you know, picking meat off galbi ribs is a hassle. Here, while grilling, they skillfully remove the bones and make it easy to eat. I've never been to a place that deboned the ribs for me before.

Meal dishes with galbi: bibim naengmyeon and doenjang jjigae

Sweet and spicy bibim naengmyeon to eat with galbi

Our first meal dish with the galbi at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno was bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles). Isn't this the one thing you can't skip when eating galbi? The sweet and spicy sauce cuts right through the meat's richness. The noodles are chewy too, and if you save a piece of galbi, put it on top and roll it up to eat? Ahh... that's happiness!

For the finish, of course, it's the soul food of Koreans, savory doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) with a rice set (baekban)! It was packed with tofu and vegetables, and the broth was really rich. After I polished off a bowl of rice, I couldn't help thinking what a satisfying, filling meal it was.
