2-person set with cockle bibimbap and mulhoe: Yeonhwa Maeul, Gangneung
In short
Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap (연화마을 꼬막비빔밥) is a Korean restaurant in Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung, specializing in cockle bibimbap and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup). Visiting Jeongdongjin, the writer ordered the 2-person set (₩48,000: medium cockle bibimbap + mulhoe for one), wrapping the bibimbap in seaweed and perilla leaves and finishing the mulhoe with noodles and rice. If you want to try both dishes at once, the set is the way to go.

I went on a trip to Jeongdongjin in Gangneung, Gangwon, and had the cockle bibimbap that Gangneung is famous for! You can't go all the way to Gangneung and skip out on delicious seafood, right?🐟
This time I had cockle bibimbap along with mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), and it really gave off that seaside-trip feeling💛 With a bunch of side dishes on top, it made for a filling, satisfying meal!

Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap: location and parking

Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap is known as a local favorite in Gangneung! It's not in downtown Gangneung — it's about a 10-minute drive from Yeomjeon Beach, or about 20 minutes from the Jeongdongjin Sea Cliff Walk (Badafogil). If you're planning a trip toward Jeongdongjin, it's a good spot to stop for a meal along the way!
⏰Closed Mondays⏰ Tue–Sun 10:30–20:00, last order 19:00

Parking was easy too — there's a large open lot in front of the restaurant, so there was plenty of space🅿️
The interior and checking the menu

Walking inside, the interior was more spacious than I expected, with plenty of room between tables — it seemed like a good place to visit with family or for a group gathering!

Seeing that it had been featured multiple times on well-known TV shows like 6 Si Nae Gohyang and Saengsaeng Jeongbotong made me realize this was a bit of a hidden gem!

Ordering the set gets you cockle bibimbap and mulhoe together at a slight discount, which was perfect for us since we wanted to try both dishes!👍

There was also a QR code on the table, so you could check the menu right on your phone. Being able to see photos of the food in advance made it a bit easier to decide what to order :D
What we ordered and the prices
- 2-person set ₩48,000 (medium cockle bibimbap + mulhoe for one)
- Cider ₩2,000
- Rice ₩1,000

Ordering the 2-person set got us not just the main dishes but a whole spread of side dishes too😋 The mains — cockle bibimbap and mulhoe — came out, along with somyeon (thin wheat noodles) to go with the mulhoe🍜 And a seaweed soup came out too, to soothe the stomach before digging into the cold dishes!
Cockle bibimbap: how spicy were the peppers?

The cockles were really generous, and there were peppers mixed in between — biting into one gave a slightly spicy kick, but it wasn't overwhelming even for me, someone who can't handle spicy food well😋 That said, if you don't like peppers, they said you can just ask the owner to leave them out when ordering — good to keep in mind✔️

The cockle bibimbap was really great wrapped in savory seaweed or fragrant perilla leaves!!! Best of all, the sauce wasn't too intense, so I just kept eating it nonstop🤤

Mulhoe: the sea squirt's fishy taste, and the noodle-and-rice combo
Next up was the mulhoe, generously loaded with fresh seafood and vegetables! With abalone, raw fish, and sea squirt in it, it looked cool and refreshing and plentiful just to look at🧊 What surprised me most was the sea squirt! I figured its distinct smell and fishy taste might be a love-it-or-hate-it thing. But the sea squirt here barely had any fishy taste at all.
Even my partner, who's usually not a fan of sea squirt, said it wasn't fishy and ate it happily👍 Even I, who loves seafood, was surprised while eating it! The mulhoe overall was sweet and tangy and refreshing, the kind of thing that really perks up your appetite.
At first I twirled some somyeon into the mulhoe and tried it that way! Adding the chewy noodles made for a really delicious combination too.
And that's not the end..! As they say, no one's ever tried it just once — like the classic 'mulhoe ajusshi,' I tucked rice into it and ate it up properly too🤣 Personally, it wasn't until I mixed in the rice that I felt like I'd truly enjoyed mulhoe the right way. If you're having mulhoe, make sure to mix in rice at the end💛
Overall thoughts on Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap

Overall the food came out generously, and it was a meal I enjoyed from the cockle bibimbap to the mulhoe! Wrapping the bibimbap in seaweed or perilla leaves was delicious, and mixing in noodles and then rice with the mulhoe meant I could enjoy it satisfyingly right to the end👍
If you want to try both dishes like I did, order the set and enjoy the variety! If you're planning a trip toward Jeongdongjin in Gangneung, stop by for a delicious meal~~😎
