Jang-an-dong hangover shabu-shabu, mala cream pasta: Shabu Torang
In short
Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch is a shabu-shabu restaurant on Jangan-ro in Dongdaemun, Seoul. The writer returned for a light meal the day after a heavy weekend, but still added ggomuli fish cake and dumplings to the basic shabu-shabu, ordered spicy-broth beef belly and extra pork neck, then finished with mala cream pasta and cream risotto. With plenty of solo seats and good value for money, Shabu Torang Jang-an is a spot worth returning to whenever a shabu-shabu craving hits.

I ate way too heavily over the weekend, so on Sunday I told myself — let's eat light! This was the plan when I came back to Shabu Torang. Long story short, 'let's eat light' turned into eating until I was stuffed because it was just too good... I'd been here before and was so satisfied that I came back for a revisit! A satisfying budget lunch report from Jang-an-dong.

What kind of place is Shabu Torang Jang-an?
Shabu Torang seems to be opening more and more branches these days! With a varied, affordable menu, it seems like a comfortable spot for anyone, young or old. Maybe it's because the brand model is Chef Eo Nam-seon, but it somehow feels more trustworthy and looks even more delicious haha.

Can you eat alone here? Seating and the interior vibe
The inside of Shabu Torang Jang-an is spacious and comfortable. There were a lot of solo diners. Most of the seats are set up for that! It seems like a comfortable place for people eating alone to come without worrying haha.

It's also good for newlyweds to eat out here~! Groups of up to about 4 can eat together. Even if a bigger group comes, everyone can gather cozily at the central hall tables, so it seems doable for family meals too haha.

Sukiyaki and shabu-shabu are eaten differently
Basically there's sauce and water set up. Sukiyaki is eaten differently from shabu-shabu!! Please refer to the method below haha (honestly though, just dumping everything in at once and boiling it up together is the best).

I asked for cold water and they gave me an ice cup! The owner was so kind.... haha there's clearly a reason this place is famous as a Jang-an-dong hotspot.

Basic shabu-shabu with ggomuli fish cake and dumplings added
Here's the basic shabu-shabu! I added ggomuli fish cake and dumplings! You absolutely have to add these!! The ggomuli fish cake is so delicious! It's not the cheap kind, it's genuinely high quality fish cake!! I thought I should definitely add this next time I make shabu-shabu at home too.

Spicy beef belly and added pork neck
This is the spicy broth! I chose beef belly! For the extra meat I went with pork neck! I said I was eating light and then ordered a ton haha... Still, since it's a healthy dish, my stomach felt less burdened after eating :)

The meat quality is really good, right?! It's super fresh and delicious! Next time, instead of beef belly or pork neck, I think ordering chicken breast from the basic meat options would be delicious too.

Finishing menu: mala cream pasta and cream risotto
For dessert I picked mala cream pasta! I was craving something spicy haha. The price is a bit much, but hey, adult privilege... haha. There's also a budget-friendly option for when kids come — the basic shabu-shabu alone is enough for them to eat comfortably and deliciously!

This is the cream risotto! Not really my personal taste, but it's tasty too. It has a quality feel like something from a dedicated Western restaurant.

So the flow doesn't break, you dump all the shabu-shabu ingredients in at once and eat.. this does take a bit longer to cook though ^^ Still, it's better to keep eating without a break haha.

Mr. Ryu Su-young is the brand model here, and he was on screen the whole time I was eating, so I felt like we'd gotten close...

After finishing the shabu-shabu! Mala cream pasta!! You just need to add one ladle of the broth and cook it! Living up to its reputation as a budget lunch hotspot in Jang-an-dong, today's Shabu Torang lunch just kept going course after course.

Adjust the broth to your own taste!

Why it was satisfying to come back again
I really scraped the plate clean... even eating it again after a while, it was delicious and such good value!! The prices are great, so a lot of students come to eat here too! Whenever you're craving shabu-shabu, I recommend Shabu Torang Jang-an, a budget lunch hotspot in Jang-an-dong!!

After eating, I was craving something cold so I went to Gong Cha and finished off with a milk tea~~~ I ordered the reduced-sugar black milk tea, and its clean flavor with less artificial sweetness was perfect as a palate cleanser after the meal :)
