Gyeongju Korean restaurant, summer beer and 7-dish set: Hwangnam

Gyeongju post number three!! This time again I made a reservation in advance for a restaurant with a wait so long it's been on TV. This place has over 18,000 reviews, and it's famous for its signature Cheomseongdae 7-dish Set. The main menu is Korean food, and since I was on summer vacation in Gyeongju, I had to go to Hwangnam Dukkebi and try the signature menu > < Let me show you in this post.

Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant Hwangnam Main Branch is at 16 Poseok-ro 1050beon-gil, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, in Gyeongju's Hwangnidan-gil. It's open daily from 11:00 to 21:00, with a break time from 15:00 to 17:00.

Summer peak season in Hwangnidan-gil: can you be seated before your reservation time?

I'd booked ahead through Naver, but even arriving before my reservation time didn't get me a seat. Arrived at Hwangnam Dukkebi..!! I'd booked in advance on Naver and left my accommodation a bit early planning to take my time wandering around Hwangnidan-gil, but the weather was so, so, so much hotter than expected that I showed up earlier than my reservation and asked if I could be seated. As expected, being a popular spot, they said there was no room. So I went back at exactly my reservation time✨

Waiting area, outdoor seating and indoor atmosphere at Hwangnam Dukkebi

There's a separate waiting area! There's a fan but no air conditioning, so on really hot days the wait might be a bit sweaty, just so you know > < There are outdoor and indoor seats, and the outdoor area actually has strong air conditioning too, so it's nice and cool. Outdoors there are tables, and indoors it looks like this. The interior gives off a bit of an old-fashioned grandma's-house vibe..!

Cheomseongdae 7-dish set for ₩43,000 and the free Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi

For the order, I went with Hwangnam Dukkebi's signature Cheomseongdae 7-dish Set for ₩43,000, plus drinks. And on top of that, I got a free Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi through the Naver event, which made me so happy > <💖 And then, finally, our turn came and we were seated!

Here's the basic table setting! The Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi is included in the signature set I ordered, but even if you don't order the Cheomseongdae set, you can get it free through the event. The visuals are amazing, right?! It was dinner time so I was starving..ㅠㅠ Let's dig in!!

What's in the Cheomseongdae 7-dish set, and is it enough for two?

The Cheomseongdae 7-dish Set had seven items in total: crab fried rice, hanwoo (Korean beef) yukhoe (raw beef), Beolgyo cockles, charcoal-grilled bulgogi, charcoal chicken skewers, flying fish roe perilla wraps, and tteokgalbi. It seemed like plenty for two people to be quite full > < And then the signature Cheomseongdae 7-dish Set came out, and the presentation was so unmistakably Gyeongju✨ Let's eat until we burst today. Hwangnam Dukkebi has even appeared on a travel info TV show as a recommended Hwangnidan-gil food course in Gyeongju — totally recommend it.

How does the food at Hwangnam Dukkebi taste?

The food was well-seasoned and tasty across the board, each dish holding its own flavor. The charcoal chicken skewers went down easy, and the flying fish roe wraps too — you can mix and match combinations to your taste. The Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi was delicious even for someone with kid-level taste buds like me!!

Wrapping up with a final full shot. On this Gyeongju trip, I was so glad I booked ahead for the restaurants with long waits > < The dishes were tasty and everything had that distinct Gyeongju atmosphere to it.

Going during peak season, the wait was seriously so long that I was extremely glad, a thousand times over, that I'd booked ahead. The signature Cheomseongdae-shaped menu also made for great photos. The taste was solid and delicious, sticking to the basics!
