Gyeongju Korean restaurant, gondeure rice after break time: Dongyang

In short

Dongyang Baekban is a countryside-style Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju. Walking in the moment weekday break time ended, the writer ordered sumi dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) at 28,000 won, gondeure rice (mountain-herb rice) at 6,000 won and mini yukjeon (beef pancake); the chicken comes with glass noodles as standard in a sweet sauce mild enough for children. Weekend waits at Dongyang Baekban run long, so the 17:00 weekday reopening is the easiest way in.

I finally got some vacation time and went down to Gyeongju haha. Going on a weekday made it nice and quiet. Gyeongju is always great whenever I go. Trying to figure out what to eat for dinner, I really wanted to go back to Dongyang Baekban, a place I'd visited before, so off I went!

Dongyang Baekban is already a well-known restaurant on Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil haha. Let me share a review of the dishes that were delicious.

Where is Dongyang Baekban on Hwangridan-gil, and where do you park?

The exterior has that feel of arriving at a countryside home haha. It's cozy, and it just smells like a good restaurant. It really makes you feel like you've arrived at Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil haha.

Room seating and how long the wait is at Dongyang Baekban

Inside the private rooms at Dongyang Baekban there's a small window, so it doesn't feel stuffy at all — I liked that. And each room has only a few tables, so you get to enjoy things pretty privately haha.

Quiet dining room right after weekday break time

The interior isn't huge, so it seems like you'd have to wait quite a while during busy hours. Since it's a famous restaurant on Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil, the weekend wait is no joke. I went on a weekday right after break time ended haha.

Basic side dish spread at Dongyang Baekban
Kkakdugi and other side dishes with gondeure rice

Gondeure rice, 6,000 won: the dish that stole the meal

Dongyang Baekban's side dishes are exactly what you need, no more, no less, and the kkakdugi (radish kimchi) was especially good?!? I ordered the gondeure rice, and the aroma and nutty flavor of the gondeure herbs made it a total rice-thief. I actually ate half of it before the chicken stew even arrived, haha.

I really wanted to try the gamtae rice too, but of course it wasn't available the day I went, ugh. Disappointing, but it gives me a reason to go back again haha.

Sumi dakbokkeumtang, 28,000 won: glass noodles included as standard

I ordered Dongyang Baekban's sumi dakbokkeumtang haha. I went back and forth with the tomato version, but after a lot of deliberation I decided to go with the classic. I was going to add glass noodles, but they came standard — so I got super excited.

Chicken stew topped with enoki mushrooms and boiled egg

The chicken stew comes fully cooked, so you just bring it to a boil once and eat. The enoki mushrooms and boiled egg on top might seem like small touches, but don't they make it look pretty haha.

The visuals are no joke, ugh. I cleaned my plate that day. The sauce base is sweet rather than spicy, so it goes perfectly with rice. It's mild enough that even young kids could eat it.

Potatoes and glass noodles inside the chicken stew

Potatoes, glass noodles, and various other ingredients are packed in generously, and even though I wasn't that hungry at the time, it was so good I just kept eating haha. The well-cooked potatoes were especially fluffy and delicious, and the chicken is boneless, so there's no hassle picking meat off the bone. No gamey smell at all, and the ratio of chicken skin is just right — so good haha.

Mini yukjeon at Dongyang Baekban, with chive salad as the kicker

I also tried Dongyang Baekban's mini yukjeon (beef pancake) — the chive salad is the real kicker.

The egg-coated yukjeon eaten together with the nutty, slightly spicy chive salad and onions is genuinely delicious. If you're looking for a Korean restaurant on Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil, I recommend Dongyang Baekban a hundred times over 💗
