Cheonan army stew lunch: Songtan pot with extra ham at Cheongwon

In short

Cheongwon Restaurant: Cooking Budae-jjigae is a budae-jjigae (army stew) restaurant in an alley of Dujeong-dong, near Dujeong Station in Cheonan. On a chilly, windy day, the writer had Songtan budae-jjigae with extra ham for lunch and was struck by the spicy broth, where the meaty ham and sausage flavor blends with a beef stock, and by the bean sprout side dish. The verdict: at Cheongwon Restaurant, adding extra ham and sausage is a must.

Alley and parking spaces in front of Cheongwon Restaurant

Parking at Cheongwon Restaurant: is it okay for an SUV?

There's room for about 4 cars in front of the restaurant, which might feel a bit tight. It's a one-way street and the alley is rather narrow.

Cheongwon in Dujeong-dong is already known as a budae-jjigae hotspot, even among mukbang YouTubers. I drive a compact car, so parking was easy, but an SUV might have a hard time, haha. Just a heads-up.

Songtan vs. Cheongwon budae-jjigae: what's the difference?

Cheongwon menu board with Songtan and Cheongwon budae-jjigae

The menu is simple, just two items: Cheongwon budae-jjigae and Songtan budae-jjigae ㅎ_ㅎ The Songtan budae-jjigae is the classic version, with minced Korean beef (hanwoo) for a deep broth. The Cheongwon budae-jjigae adds beef brisket and Cheongyang chilies to the same base, so pick it if you want it spicier.

You choose one of the two. I had the Cheongwon last time, so this time I'm trying the basic Songtan one.

Songtan budae-jjigae with extra ham: how did it taste?

Songtan budae-jjigae pot before boiling

Ta-da! I ordered the Songtan budae-jjigae at Cheongwon and added a ham refill. With the ham in, the pot looks much more generous.

The ham and sausage flavor is really rich. Adding cheese would be even better, but my friend doesn't like cheese, so I boldly skipped it. The meaty aroma from the ham and sausage blended with the beef broth and seasoning into a deep base that was spicy and delicious.

Three basic side dishes at Cheongwon, including bean sprouts
Budae-jjigae broth with a bowl of rice

Three side dishes, with bean sprouts as the standout

Three side dishes come out, and the bean sprouts are the star. A rich, hearty base with a nutty, deep savoriness, plus a thick broth and plenty of ingredients made for a filling lunch.

Please boil it until it's bubbling hot >_<!!!

Bubbling ham and sausage budae-jjigae

It's less a clear, clean broth and more the ham and sausage combo that makes it. Be sure to add the sausage>_<!!!!!!!
