A conveyor sushi lunch after our health checkup: Teukbyeolhan Chobap, Yeongtong

Teukbyeolhan Chobap (특별한초밥) Yeongtong branch is a conveyor-belt sushi place in Yeongtong, Suwon. My husband and I got our health checkups a bit early this year. We split the castella cake and milk the checkup center gave us to tide us over, then headed to Teukbyeolhan Chobap for lunch.

Where are the parking and elevator at Teukbyeolhan Chobap?

Park in the building's underground garage and take the shopping-wing elevator up to the 2nd floor. The officetel (residential-office building) elevator and the shopping-wing elevator are separate, so we got a little lost for a moment.

The shopping-wing elevator is near the garage entrance, so keep that in mind if it's your first visit.

Every plate ₩1,890: can you really eat without overthinking?

Whichever plate you pick, it's ₩1,890. When we got off on the 2nd floor, the first thing I noticed was the sign: "Don't overthink it, just eat! Every plate a flat ₩1,890."

At most conveyor sushi places the price changes with the plate color, which quietly nags at me, but here the whole menu is one flat price. Any plate you choose is ₩1,890, which I found really appealing. I loved being able to pick whatever I wanted without thinking about the price.

Warm soup first, then browsing the sushi on the belt

As soon as we sat down, we were served warm soup (jangguk). And right in front of us, all kinds of sushi were passing by on the belt non-stop.

Watching the belt is half the fun of conveyor sushi, so there was no need to study the menu for long.

Even while you're deciding what to eat, new plates keep coming around, so your hand just naturally reaches out.

What we ate at Teukbyeolhan Chobap

Beef tartare sushi and fresh-off-the-grill sea bream steak sushi

The first thing we tried was the beef tartare sushi (yukhoe chobap). It was piled high with yukhoe, one of my favorites, and each piece had so much on it that my husband and I shared one.

I picked the sea bream steak sushi because a staff member shouted, "Sea bream steak coming up!" It had just been made, so it was warm, and the nutty flavor was really good. Food really is best when you eat it right when it comes out.

The best of the day, eel sushi, three times

The most memorable dish at Teukbyeolhan Chobap was the eel sushi. A long, plump piece of eel sat on top of each one, so I was satisfied from the look alone. The eel was tender and went really well with the sweet-salty sauce.

It was by far the best thing we ate that day. The eel sushi alone felt like reason enough to come back. It was so good that I ate one, then two, then three.

The beef tartare tataki was a bit sweet for me

I tried the beef tartare tataki (yukhoe tadakki) too. Personally, it tasted sweet. If you like sweet flavors it'll probably be fine, but it was a little much for my taste.

Warm beef steak sushi, one more round

I also enjoyed the beef steak sushi, served warm. If something's good, have it once more! Warm dishes really are best eaten the moment they come out.

The octopus wasabi gunkan my husband picked

The octopus wasabi gunkan (battleship-style sushi roll) my husband picked was better than I expected. The wasabi aroma wasn't overpowering, just right, so it was easy to eat. If you usually like tako wasabi (octopus with wasabi), it's a safe choice.

Raw shrimp, aged-kimchi flounder, scallop steak and the cheese plates

Beyond those, we ate our fill of other plates: raw shrimp, flounder with aged kimchi, sea bream belly, scallop steak, raw shrimp steak and more.

The plates topped with cheese had a strong cheese flavor. If you like cheese, I think you'll enjoy them!

How many plates did the two of us eat?

Together we ate 17 plates at Teukbyeolhan Chobap. At first I figured we could easily manage about 10 each, but it was more filling than expected and we got full pretty quickly.

Value for money, payment and parking

Honestly, since the prices are low I didn't expect much, but the meal at Teukbyeolhan Chobap was more satisfying than I thought. Overall the value for money was pretty high, and the biggest plus was that with every plate at a flat price, you can pick whatever you want without worrying about cost. If you're looking for a sushi place with good value, it's worth a visit.

When I paid, I found out Teukbyeolhan Chobap accepts Suwon Pay (a local currency card), so I paid the extra amount with it. They also gave us a 1-hour free parking ticket, which made it convenient to come by car.

Is Teukbyeolhan Chobap okay for a solo meal or a date?

Teukbyeolhan Chobap works as a date spot, and it's also an easy place for office workers on a lunch break or people who like eating alone. There was actually a customer eating alone with earphones in, and I was impressed by how comfortable the atmosphere was, so you wouldn't feel awkward coming solo.

If you're looking for good sushi in Suwon or a good restaurant in Yeongtong, it's worth a visit. I especially recommend trying the eel sushi. Teukbyeolhan Chobap lets you enjoy a wide variety of sushi without worrying about the price.
